Ex-aide to New York governor pleads not guilty to new pandemic fraud charge
A former aide to two New York governors already facing charges of acting as an illicit agent of China pleaded not guilty on Monday to additional charges that she improperly profited from the state's purchase of face masks and other key medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Linda Sun, 41, and her husband, Chris Hu, 40, — who is also charged — entered not guilty pleas to charges of wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Hu also faces tax evasion charges. The two remain free on bond and are due back in court Aug. 25 ahead of an expected November trial. Sun's lawyer Jarrod Schaeffer declined to comment following Monday's proceedings but has previously dismissed the new charges as 'feverish accusations unmoored from the facts.' Hu's lawyers didn't immediately respond Monday but have also similarly denied the charges. Prosecutors say the couple collected millions of dollars in kickbacks by exploiting Sun's role in helping New York procure personal protective equipment, or PPE, during the pandemic in 2020. They say Sun, a naturalized U.S. citizen, used connections in her native China to secure PPE for the state, though she didn't disclose her family's ties to two vendors that received more than $44 million, prosecutors say. Sun previously pleaded not guilty to charges she used her position in state government to advance Chinese government priorities in exchange for financial rewards, including assistance with Hu's business ventures in China. The lucrative benefits helped the Long Island couple live a lavish lifestyle with multimillion-dollar properties and luxury cars, prosecutors have said. Sun worked for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his successor, Gov. Kathy Hochul, until she was fired in 2023.

South Korea factory activity shrinks for 5th month but at milder pace, PMI shows
SEOUL, July 1 (Reuters) - South Korea's factory activity contracted for the fifth straight month in June, though the pace of decline eased, supported by improving domestic economic prospects under the country's new administration, a business survey showed on Tuesday. The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for manufacturers in Asia's fourth-largest economy, released by S&P Global, edged up to 48.7 in June, from 47.7 in May. The index has stayed below the 50-mark, which separates expansion from contraction, since February. "Manufacturing output and sales both decreased, albeit at a softer rate than that seen in May, as firms signalled pockets of improvements in the domestic market," said Usamah Bhatti, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence. South Korea's consumer sentiment reached a four-year high in June, buoyed by political stability following a snap presidential election on June 3 that ended six months of uncertainty, according to an earlier central bank survey. In Tuesday's survey, business sentiment regarding the year-ahead outlook for output rebounded from the previous month to its strongest since May 2024, as firms reported reduced concerns about global economic risks. However, while output and new orders fell at a milder pace, new export orders declined slightly faster due to weaker sales across key markets such as Japan, China and the United States, the survey found. South Korea's new administration, led by President Lee Jae Myung, has pledged short-term measures to support the economy as tariff negotiations continue with Washington. A senior South Korean trade official said on Monday that Seoul will seek an extension to the 90-day pause on U.S. tariffs, set to expire next week, as talks are expected to continue beyond the deadline.

South Korea exports rebound on tech boost but US, China shipments extend losses
SEOUL, July 1 (Reuters) - South Korea's exports rose in June on the back of strong tech demand, after falling in May for the first time in four months, trade data showed on Tuesday, though shipments to the U.S. and China remained weak amid tariff uncertainty. Exports from Asia's fourth-largest economy, an early bellwether for global trade, rose 4.3% from the same month last year to $59.80 billion, marginally weaker than the median 4.7% rise tipped in a Reuters poll of economists. In May, exports dipped 1.3%, as shipments to the U.S. and China dropped more than 8% each on downward pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats. Shipments to the U.S. fell 0.5% last month, extending losses for a third consecutive month, while those to China were also down for a second month, dropping 2.7%. Exports to the European Union rose 14.7%, while those to Southeast Asian countries gained 2.1%. "Volatility in U.S. tariff policy and economic recovery uncertainty are expected to persist in the second half," South Korean Industry and Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun said, promising an all-out response to U.S. tariffs. South Korea will seek an extension to the 90-day pause in U.S. tariffs that is set to expire next week, as negotiations are likely to continue past the deadline set between Seoul and Washington, a senior South Korean trade official said on Monday. Exports of semiconductors extended gains for a fourth straight month by rising 11.6%, but it was the slowest in the streak. Automobiles rose 2.3%, as robust electric-vehicle demand in Europe offset losses in U.S. sales, according to the ministry. Imports rose 3.3% to $50.72 billion, bringing the monthly trade balance to a surplus of $9.08 billion, the biggest since September 2018.
