Mandela Day: Old age home thanks Big Save, Pretoria News for making 'big, big difference'

IOL News5 days ago
On Mandela Day, Pretoria News and Big Save joined forces to uplift the elderly residents of Mamelodi Old Age Home, donating food hampers and spreading kindness in honour of Nelson Mandela's legacy.
The leadership of Pretoria News and Big Save believe that everyone deserves a good life and that every act of kindness – big or small – counts during this Mandela Month and beyond.
The two brands, both rooted in the communities they serve in the Tshwane region, demonstrated this when they joined hands to celebrate this year's International Nelson Mandela Day on Friday with the residents of the Mamelodi Old Age Home in Mamelodi East, Pretoria.
Pretoria News and retail partner Big Save donated 67 food hampers to the old age home. The outreach function on Friday was a heartfelt gesture to honour the late former president.
Mandela Day, commemorated annually on July 18, encourages South Africans and the world to dedicate their time to acts of kindness, reflecting on Mandela's 67 years of service to the nation. In that spirit, Pretoria News and Big Save stepped in with practical support offering not only food but dignity and care to senior citizens often overlooked.
The Mamelodi Old Age Home houses 56 elderly residents aged 60 and above, many of whom rely on limited government grants and small family contributions to make ends meet. The 67 food parcels were each packed with 12.5kg maize meal, samp, salt, sugar, tea, and Kellogg's Corn Flakes will go a long way in easing their burdens.

St Augustine Catholic Church youth brings hope to Wedela on Mandela Day

Members of the St Augustine Catholic Church in Kokosi extended a hand of compassion to the community of Wedela this Mandela Day, 18 July. The church's Youth Ministry visited the Vukani Home-based Care Centre in Wedela, where they spent their 67 minutes of service in the spirit of Ubuntu. During the visit, they donated food and clothing to support vulnerable residents in the area. 'We donated food and clothes to the community. The event was a success, and we intend to do more for this community to bring change to other people's lives,' said Anastasia Lefalatsa, an active church member. She added that the church hopes to secure sponsorships from local stakeholders, including the municipality and nearby businesses, to make an even bigger impact in the future. The heartfelt initiative reflects the true meaning of Mandela Day — serving others and uplifting communities in need.

Belly2Brain's bold Mandela Day campaign begins with 67-hour cage lock-in and 17 000 sandwich goal

After 67 hours confined in a cage inside Cradlestone Mall, Dominique Tibbles, the founder of Belly2brain, completed her mission to make 17 000 sandwiches for Mandela Day. A very happy Dominique announced they had achieved their goal of making the sandwiches and managed to prepare all of them to donate to those in need, including The Cradle of Hope, The Bethany House Trust, Wings of Inspiration, and the community of Apple Park. Following the emotional rollercoaster of being 'locked up', she said the joy far outweighed the negativity associated with it. She was thrilled to see that over 300 people had come to the mall to help make the sandwiches. 'Usually, we finish making the sandwiches by the afternoon [on Mandela Day]; however, due to all the helping hands, we finished about three hours earlier, and had a thousand more sandwiches than last year!' She is uncertain about doing this initiative again next year. 'Every year I say it is the last time I am doing it, but the next year I do it anyway. I'll rest on it and decide if I'll do it again,' she concluded.

Thembalami welcomes back elderly gogos for Mandela Month celebration

In the spirit of Mandela Month, Thembalami Care Centre and the Max Ordman Deaf Association (MODA) warmly welcomed back a group of cherished older women from Alexandra, affectionately known as the 'gogos'. These women were previously part of Thembalami's Zamokuhle outreach programme. Although the 14-year-long Zamokuhle programme ended in June 2023 due to budget cuts by the Department of Social Development, the bond between Thembalami and the gogos remains strong. During the 67-minute Mandela Day celebration, the gogos joined residents and staff for a day filled with joyful activities. The programme included light exercises, singing, and a creative session making pom-pom dolls. The handmade dolls, along with bibs made by Thembalami housemother Jane Mogwale and resident Jo-Ann Weyerman-Noble, were later donated to Sithandiwe Disabled Care Centre in Lombardy East, extending the day's goodwill even further.
