Watch: Heavy rains lash parts of Dubai, Abu Dhabi; showers expected until evening
With the arrival of the weekend, residents often end up staying indoors during the summer months, as a way to beat the heat. However this Sunday, they are in for a treat, as showers in some parts of the country bring respite from soaring temperatures. The National Centre of Meteorology reported heavy to light rains in areas of Al Ain like Mezyad, Malaqit, Al Hiyar, Sa, Khatm Al Shiklah, and Um Ghaffa. Storm Centre also shared visuals of heavy rains lashing parts of Dubai-Al Ain road and Al Ain's Um Ghafa Road. The rains, which started at around 1.30pm as per the NCM, are expected to continue until 7.30pm today. The showers are a result of convective cloud formation, which have come along with fresh to strong winds, causing blowing dust at a speed of 45 km/hr over some eastern and southern areas. The Met also issued orange and yellow alerts in some parts of the country, warning residents of expected hazardous weather events and to be on the lookout incase of outdoor activities. Abu Dhabi Police has urged drivers to exercise caution due to rainy weather conditions, and to adhere to the variable speed limits displayed on signs and electronic boards. This is the not the first time this month that rains have hit the country. Residents first experienced the pleasant surprise on July 15, when rains hit some parts of the UAE, bringing some respite from the sweltering summer heat. This was followed by heavy to moderate showers along with hail on July 16 in areas of Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman. Just two days ago, Dubai residents experienced the first hail of this summer, accompanied by thunderstorm in some parts of the city. Earlier today, red and yellow alerts of fog were issued by the met authority for the early morning hours in parts of Abu Dhabi. The NCM had also said that the mercury is expected to reach a scorching 49°C in Abu Dhabi's Gasyoura and Mezaira. Dubai is forecast to hit 43°C, while Abu Dhabi will see highs of 44°C.

Tour de France 2025: Relentless Tadej Pogacar extends lead to more than four minutes
Tadej Pogacar powered to victory in an uphill time trial on Stage 13 of the Tour de France on Friday to stretch his lead in the race to more than four minutes. Jonas Vingegard and Remco Evenepoel clung on to their places in the overall top three, but this 10.9km time-trial triumph was defending champion Pogacar's second crushing win in two days. UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider Pogacar was last down the start ramp of the 171 riders setting off and stunned rivals by using a road bike instead of one typically used for time trials. 'It's more comfortable and I ride that 95 per cent of the year,' he explained. 'I went without a radio too, there are time clocks along the way so I just looked at them.' Decked out in his overall leader's yellow kit, the 26-year-old Slovenian was faster from the off, despite his exertions from the previous day, when he finished over two minutes ahead of main rival Vingegaard. 'I was feeling good all day, from when I got up. I was planning to go all in from start to finish and that's what I did,' said Pogacar, who won the Tour de France in 2020, 2021 and 2024. Pogacar had a sticker of the Hulk comic book superhero on his bike but said after the stage his hero was Spider-Man. 'Hulk though, he's the one you don't want to make angry,' said Pogacar. By the time he finished Dtage 13 at the Peyragudes Altiport where the opening scene of the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies was shot, Pogacar was 36 seconds faster than Vingegaard, while Primoz Roglic was third at 1 min 20 sec. Evenepoel was overtaken close to the line by Vingegaard, but said he was too tired to care. 'I was drained,' he said, slumped in a chair. 'I didn't give a damn when Jonas went past.' 'I just wanted to finish. To be honest I'm relieved it's over,' said the double Olympic champion. Most riders warmed up for the time trial wearing ice jackets to combat the sizzling 30C temperature at the foot of the climb. Australian champion Luke Plapp set the early pace and sat in the hot seat all day before suddenly packing his case and vacating it on seeing Vingegaard storm up the mountain. Pogacar was even faster. At 1580m altitude the ride remained beneath the clouds and below the tree line, but even on top of the hill it was punishingly hot. American Quinn Simmons gave hundreds of high-fives on the home straight as one of the rare riders appearing to enjoy the climb. Saturday's Stage 14 is another punishing affair with around 50km of climbing but it will likely be raced in rain. It starts with the famous Col de Tourmalet and ends at the Luchon-Superbagneres ski resort. Stage 15 is a hilly run to the walled city of Carcassonne but for Pogacar there remains the spectre of three more massive mountain stages in the final week. There is also the prospect of potential chaos in Paris with three ascents of Montmartre's old cobbled lanes on the final day.

UAE weather tomorrow: Rains likely; humid conditions expected
Residents in the UAE on Saturday (July 19) will get some relief from the intense summer heat, with rain likely in parts of the country, National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said. Overall, conditions will be fair to partly cloudy, with a probability of some convective clouds formation associated with rainfall, especially in the easter and southern areas. While the weather department noted of chance of rains, residents still need to take caution, as temperatures are expected to reach up to 48°C in some areas of Abu Dhabi, such as Mezaira and Gasyoura. Dubai will see highs of up to 45°C while Abu Dhabi will reach up to 44°C. It will be humid by night and Sunday morning with a probability of mist formation over some western coastal and internal areas. Winds will shift from southeasterly to northwesterly, remaining light to moderate at speeds of 10–25kmph, but could reach up to 40kmph, stirring blowing dust in some areas. The Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea will experience slight to moderate sea conditions.
