Ipoh senior citizen loses RM158,000 in phone scam

New Straits Times18 hours ago
IPOH: A 73-year-old man has lost RM158,000 in a phone scam involving individuals impersonating insurance agent and policemen.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the victim lodged a police report yesterday after realising he had been duped by the scammers.
Abang Zainal Abidin said the victim had made 12 separate transactions into 12 different bank accounts, purportedly as part of a police investigation.
"The victim first received a call from someone claiming to represent an insurance company, alleging that he had outstanding payments.
"The call was then transferred to another individual who claimed to be a policeman from the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.
"The victim was told he was under investigation for money laundering involving over RM2 million and that an arrest warrant had been issued against him," he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that, in a state of panic, the victim was allegedly threatened and instructed to transfer funds, purportedly for bail and to facilitate an internal investigation.
"This is a typical modus operandi used by scam syndicates, instilling fear and urgency in the victim before coercing them into transferring money under the pretence of avoiding legal action," he said.
Following the police report, he said an investigation has been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of ten years' jail, whipping, and a fine if convicted.
He added that efforts are ongoing to track down the suspects and the owners of the bank accounts used in the scam.
He also urged the public to be vigilant when receiving unsolicited calls, especially those claiming to be from enforcement agencies or financial institutions.
"We want to remind the public that neither the police nor any financial institution will ever request banking details or ask for payments over the phone under any circumstances," he said.

MMEA intercepts Vietnamese boat with sea cucumbers near Kudat

KUDAT: A Vietnamese fishing vessel, involved in sea cucumber harvesting, acted aggressively when it attempted to ram a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) boat while trying to escape yesterday. However, the attempt failed as the Cenderawasih 10 patrol boat successfully intercepted and detained them in an incident about 4am, 1.22 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Bukit, Pulau Malawali. The Kudat Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Hasbullah Omar, said the Cenderawasih 10 boat was deployed to the location immediately after receiving public information and subsequently detected the suspicious movement of the vessel. "When approached, the suspects cut the tow rope, leaving it dangling long behind the vessel. They also installed iron bars on the left and right sides to prevent the operations team from getting closer," he said in a statement. "The suspects also tried to ram the Malaysian Maritime patrol boat that was attempting to approach." He said MMEA pursued the vessel for almost 15 minutes before officers managed to board the foreign fishing vessel and detain it. "Further inspection found it was carrying special solid iron equipment, believed to be for sea cucumber harvesting. Also found on board were 40kg of sea cucumbers and 300 litres of diesel. "Five Vietnamese nationals, aged between 28 and 39, were detained for not possessing valid identification documents," he said. All those arrested, along with the vessel, marine produce, and equipment, were brought to the Kudat maritime jetty for further investigation. The total value of the seizure is estimated to be over RM2 million. The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1956/63.

Police warn public over AI-generated fake video of King offering financial aid

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have warned the public against falling for a fake video circulating on social media that features a manipulated image of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, purportedly announcing financial aid for Malaysians. In a statement today, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the 32-second video, uploaded to the TikTok account @datukzulkarnain77, falsely depicts the King delivering a speech urging individuals in financial distress to contact a person identified as Datuk Zulkarnain. "The video is fake and is believed to have been produced using artificial intelligence (AI) technology," he said. Rusdi said a police report had been lodged, and an investigation was ongoing under Section 419 of the Penal Code for impersonation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities. He reminded the public not to be duped by the content and to avoid contacting the individual named in the video. "This is an attempt to deceive the public. We advise everyone to be cautious and not to share or act on misleading content involving the Royal Institution," he said. Police also urged social media users to report suspicious content and to verify the authenticity of any video involving national figures or offers of financial assistance.
