Former Colorado star KJ Simpson wins NBA Summer League title with the Charlotte Hornets

USA Today21-07-2025
Former Colorado basketball star point guard KJ Simpson concluded his second summer league stint with an NBA Summer League championship after the Charlotte Hornets beat the Sacramento Kings, 83-78.
Simpson started for the Hornets along with Charlotte's 2025 first-round selection, former Duke guard Kon Knueppel. Despite the win, Simpson struggled offensively in the final but made up for it in other areas. In 31 minutes of action, Simpson tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 4-of-15 shooting from the field and 1-of-6 from 3-point range.
Knueppel, who was named the game's MVP, praised the former Colorado guard for being the Hornets' leader throughout the Summer League. Simpson was quick to point out that Knueppel was deserving of the award.
"Kon, nah, he deserved that, man. He was excellent in this game," Simpson said. "We all played well. It [the MVP award] could have been anybody. I just wanted to go out there and help lead the team. Just be a good vocal leader. It was a team win, shoutout to Kon, shoutout to everybody, man.
Simpson is entering his second year in the NBA and has shown significant growth during the 10-day summer event, averaging 16 points, 5.7 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game in six Summer League games.
The Hornets have to like what they saw from Simpson, a former second-round pick, leading Charlotte's young core to a title.
Simpson and the Hornets got the win over former Buff Nique Clifford, who scored 10 points in 33 minutes of action.

Is Texas A&M's next 1,000-yard receiver on the 2025 roster?

Texas A&M's lack of passing production under former head coach Jimbo Fisher was notable and highly disappointing, as the Aggies have yet to produce a 1,000-yard wide receiver since the 2016 season, when Josh Reynolds reeled in 1,039 yards and 12 touchdowns. Even with standout receivers like Christian Kirk and Evan Stewart on the roster, this issue was one of the many reasons Fisher was not retained after the 2023 campaign. This season, second-year head coach Mike Elko, OC Collin Klein, and WR coach Holmon Wiggins are counting on former NC State standout KC Concepcion to lead the offense and become starting quarterback Marcel Reed's go-to target. While staying healthy is the No. 1 goal, Concepcion's speed and elite quickness, along with his ability to gain chunk yards after the catch, make him a likely candidate to lead the Aggies in several categories, including receiving yards. Still, predicting a 1,000-yard receiver is nearly impossible during the preseason. Still, out of every wide receiver on the 2025 roster, Concepcion looks like the player who could break the almost 10-year streak, especially if Marcel Reed expands his throw game and begins pushing the ball down the field. For those interested, here are the leading receivers for Texas A&M since Josh Reynolds' final season with the program. Outside of Christian Kirk, Jhamon Ausbon, and tight end Jace Sterberger, who were close to eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark, Concepcion is more than talented enough with two years, and a combined 1,299 yards receiving at NC State, including 839 yards during the 2023 season. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 37: a history of the number and who wore it best

The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 37 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 37 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 37 wearer: DB Kyler McMichael McMichael is the current Steelers wearer of No. 37. Despite having yet to make his NFL regular season debut, McMichael has spent time with the Buccaneers, Bills, and Cardinals — mostly on practice squads. He joined the Steelers in July 2024 but didn't make the roster, instead signing a Reserve/Future contract this past January. McMichael faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster — but a strong showing in camp and preseason could crack the door open for a spot. Last five Steelers to wear No. 37: Best No. 37 in Steelers history: DB Carnell Lake One of the top defensive backs of the 1990s, Carnell Lake is the best Steeler to ever wear No. 37. Selected with the 34th pick in the second round of the 1989 NFL Draft, Lake played 10 seasons in Pittsburgh from 1989 to 1998, starting every game of his Steel City tenure while playing safety and occasionally cornerback. He earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 1997 and 1999, and was named Second-Team All-Pro in 1992, 1994, and 1995. Throughout his Steelers career, Lake totaled 734 combined tackles, 21.5 sacks, 16 interceptions, 15 forced fumbles, and five defensive touchdowns. He was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team, and inducted into the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor for his elite play — cementing his legacy as one of the most consistent defenders in franchise history and arguably the best Steeler to ever wear No. 37. Lasting thoughts on was we saw from Notre Dame football during its first fall practice

Notre Dame football started its fall practices on Thursday, and we all got the see the Irish back on the field. There was plenty to take away from yesterday, as head coach Marcus Freeman seemed fairly happy with his team's performance. Now we all love being armchair coaches, and when you haven't see the Blue and Gold in about four months, we get it. After getting a chance to digest what we saw and heard, there are still a few things going through my mind. Here are my day after thoughts on Notre Dame's first fall practice of 2025. No need to overreact to the quarterback news Sure, CJ Carr didn't have a great day, and the Kenny Minchey was fairly quiet, but there is no need to proclaim anyone as the frontrunner. While the staff here does believes that Carr will eventually win out, his counterpart can get the job done as well. Marcus Freeman did say following the practice that the coaches weren't going to hold any judgements until after they reviewed the film. Follow their lead, and let this competition play out. Injury free There weren't any injuries suffered in practice, the only one's that Notre Dame is dealing with were before yesterday. That's great news on two fronts, first not losing anyone on day one shows that the strength and conditioning staff did a fantastic job preparing this team for the season. Secondly, it gives the coaches a chance to really see which players fighting for a job or more playing time letting loose. This surely won't be every day of the fall, but it's an encouraging start. Is a new star safety emerging? You love to hear when the younger, unproven players have started to step up, and we saw that with redshirt freshman Tae Johnson. He came into the program being a do-it-all player for North Side in Fort Wayne, but an injury kept him off the field last fall. It might have been a blessing in disguise, as he looks ready to contribute now. Johnson had two interceptions on the day, as he's fighting to take over one of the open safety spots. A big first day will help, but he'll need to do it with pads on and consistently. There is college football at the end of this month The excitement of football in July, that will immediately bleed over into August is extremely exciting. There is football at the end of this month! Sure, the NFL got started with its preseason last night, but college football is right around the corner. It's now just weeks until we see Notre Dame on the field again, with expectations extremely high for this group. It's going to be a fun ride this fall for the Irish.
