Premium motorcycle market gains ground in India as consumer preferences evolve: Crisil

India's two-wheeler industry is accelerating towards premiumisation, with higher-capacity motorcycles gaining traction among consumers. According to a report by Crisil Intelligence, the share of premium motorcycles—those with engine capacities above 150cc—rose to 19 per cent in FY25 from 14 per cent in FY19. This shift reflects evolving consumer aspirations and increasing affordability, especially in urban and semi-urban centres.
Growth of multiple segments
Crisil noted that the volume of premium motorcycles climbed to 23 lakh units in FY25, up from 19 lakh units in FY19. The trend is expected to continue, with premium motorcycle market share projected to reach 22 per cent by 2030.
Conversely, the economy segment—bikes with engine capacities below 150cc—has been losing ground. Its market share fell sharply to 46 per cent in FY25, down from 62 per cent in FY19. Volumes in this category declined from 84 lakh units to 56 lakh units during the same period. Analysts attribute the decline to sustained weakness in rural demand and a steady increase in vehicle prices, which have made entry-level models less affordable for budget-conscious buyers.
Interestingly, premium motorcycle sales not only recovered but also surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 22 per cent in FY25. In contrast, overall two-wheeler sales reached only 94 per cent of their pre-COVID volume, while total motorcycle sales touched 90 per cent.
The findings underscore a broader trend of shifting consumer preferences across the Indian automotive landscape, where aspirational ownership and lifestyle upgrades are beginning to outweigh purely functional considerations, particularly in urban and younger demographics.

Speaking to the media, Fadnavis noted that Tesla's move to open its Experience Centre marks the American EV giant's formal entry into the Indian market. Beyond this, the company is also working on developing a robust ecosystem for delivery, logistics, and servicing in the region. 'Tesla is setting up four major charging stations in Mumbai, which will help build a large-scale charging infrastructure in the city,' CM Fadnavis added. The Chief Minister also expressed his delight that Tesla has chosen Mumbai for its first showroom in India. He emphasised that Maharashtra is now emerging as a leader in EVs and mobility, thanks to its supportive policies for charging infrastructure and manufacturing incentives, which are drawing global companies to the state. Tesla has launched its journey in India with the introduction of its popular Model Y. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant of the Model Y is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The company has also unveiled the long-range RWD variant of the Model Y, priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. Addressing the gathering at the launch event, CM Fadnavis said, 'Mumbai is a symbol of innovation. It represents sustainability. Tesla is not just a car company -- it stands for design, innovation, and sustainability.' Recalling his first encounter with Tesla in the United States, CM Fadnavis said, 'Back in 2015, I had my first ride in a Tesla in the US, and I realised then that this is the kind of vehicle we need for mobility in India.' He added, 'It may have taken you 10 years to get here, but we are thrilled you've finally arrived. I believe the people of Mumbai and India will truly embrace Tesla. Once you begin vehicle deliveries, India will undoubtedly become one of your best markets.'

ISMA urges Govt to continue with curbs on ethanol imports

New Delhi: The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has urged the government to continue with the restrictions on ethanol imports as the measure has spurred India's petrol blending programme in the drive to green energy and also enabled timely payments to sugarcane farmers. ISMA has, in a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, referred to media reports suggesting the possible consideration of lifting restrictions on ethanol imports for fuel blending, as part of ongoing trade discussions with the US. The latter states that over the last few years, the Government's clear and forward-looking policy direction-anchored in the National Policy on Biofuels which led to placing ethanol imports for fuel under the 'restricted' category, has laid a solid foundation for a self-reliant, domestic ethanol economy. The interest subvention schemes and facilitative regulatory ecosystem have catalysed the establishment and expansion of indigenous ethanol capacities across India, the letter points out. These landmark interventions have achieved multiple national objectives of ensuring timely payments and enhanced incomes for sugarcane farmers, reducing India's dependence on imported crude oil and promoting clean and sustainable biofuels, the letter states. It highlights that the coordinated effort has led to India's ethanol production capacity growing by over 140 per cent since 2018, with investments exceeding Rs 40,000 crore. Ethanol blending has already reached 18.86 per cent and is firmly on track to meet the 20 per cent blending objective ahead of target. This remarkable progress has been made possible due to the Prime Minister's visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of India's farmers. This has had a direct and measurable impact on farmers' welfare. By allowing the diversion of sugarcane and surplus grains into ethanol production at administered prices, the government has enabled timely cane payments and improved farm-level incomes across the country, the letter added. The latter states that opening up ethanol imports for blending would pose challenges to the sugar industry as it would affect profitability and may lead to underutilisation of Indian ethanol plants, many of which are still in the early stages of capital recovery.

Rupani will succeed Juan Pablo Rodriguez as CEO of HCCB and bring with him extensive FMCG experience from Mondelez, PepsiCo, Vodafone and Britannia Sharleen Dsouza Mumbai The Coca-Cola Company announced on Tuesday that Hemant Rupani will join Bangalore-based bottler Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) as chief executive officer, effective 8 September. Rupani joins HCCB after a nine-year stint with Mondelez International and is currently serving as Mondelez's business unit president for Southeast Asia, which includes Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. He will succeed the current HCCB CEO, Juan Pablo Rodriguez, who is moving to a new opportunity within the Coca-Cola system. 'Hemant is a highly accomplished business leader who has delivered impressive results and driven commercial success over his career. He brings a strong blend of experience in both Indian and multinational organisations. HCCB looks forward to him helping deliver on the bottler's considerable investment in India,' HCCB said in its release. He joined Mondelez in 2016 as director of sales for India. He went on to serve as vice president and managing director for Vietnam before being promoted to his current role in 2022. Rupani began his career in 1997 with paint company ICI India and then joined PepsiCo India in 1999. In 2002, he moved to Infosys Technologies and then returned to PepsiCo in 2004, where he spent the next six years. He eventually became senior vice president, customer marketing, India Beverages. In 2010, Rupani joined Vodafone and, in 2014, moved to food company Britannia Industries as vice president, sales and business head, breads. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Regional Engineering College in Jaipur, India, and an MBA in marketing from the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi. HCCB is the largest Coca-Cola bottler in India. In December 2024, The Coca-Cola Company announced an agreement for Jubilant Bhartia Group to acquire a 40 per cent stake in Hindustan Coca-Cola Holdings, HCCB's parent company.
