Naomi Osaka announces she is no longer working with coach Patrick Mouratoglou

Yahoo27-07-2025
WASHINGTON (AP) — Naomi Osaka and coach Patrick Mouratoglou are done working together after less than a year, the four-time Grand Slam champion announced Sunday on social media.
'Merci Patrick,' Osaka began her post, with a photo of her hitting a practice serve while he stands nearby. 'It was such a great experience learning from you. Wishing you nothing but the best. You are one of the coolest people I've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around.'
The news comes three days after Osaka lost her second match at the D.C. Open and just before she begins competing in Toronto. The U.S. Open, the year's last major tournament and an event Osaka won twice, begins in New York on Aug. 24.
Osaka hired Mouratoglou — who was the longtime coach of Serena Williams — when she fired Wim Fissette shortly after her second-round exit at last year's U.S. Open.
Osaka, a former No. 1, is currently ranked 51st and has a 21-11 record this season.
She hasn't been past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament since winning the 2021 Australian Open.

Jets alums from the 1990s show up at camp, say Aaron Glenn has team going in right direction

As the Jets get ready to play their first preseason game this weekend against the Green Bay Packers, first-time head coach Aaron Glenn says there are marks he wants the team to meet ahead of the season. On Tuesday, he got some winning backup from former teammates who know what it takes to succeed. Jets alums from the 1990s came out to support Glenn and get a feel for the direction the team is heading in before the start of the season. It appears they liked what they saw. Former Jets cornerback Ray Mickens, Glenn's partner in the secondary for much of his eight seasons in green and white, said he remembers his former teammate's journey from player to scout to, finally, his dream job, head coach. "It's always good to see those guys. I want those guys to be part of what we're trying to build. They've been there. They know exactly what it is to be a Jet. There's a number of things that go into playing for this team and those guys know what it is. We're teaching our guys what it is. [The alums] have been through it. It's like déjà vu," Glenn said. Mickens said Glenn's rise from NFL player to head coach has been a testament to his dedication. "What it took to get there, you don't know if everybody is willing to do it. What I saw from him is someone who was willing to do anything that it took to become a head coach, and that's what gives me goosebumps," Mickens said. Glenn has seen both hard times and a winning culture with the Jets. Former offensive tackle Jason Fabini said he believes that will set him apart. "He's a brother, man," Fabini said of Glenn. "We played together. We've been through a lot, and to see him succeed is awesome. He knows New York and he knows what it takes to win here, and if he wins here what's gonna happen. It's awesome. Us former players want to see the team win." Kevin Mawae, a Hall of Famer center who played for the Jets, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans, said he's seen quite a progression from Glenn the player to Glenn the head coach. "It's neat to see the growth and the maturity of where he's at, but also the passion that he has for this organization," Mawae said. "It's one thing to be a coach somewhere else but it's another thing to coach your franchise that drafted you and brought you into this business, and wanting to turn it around." Mawae said there's a palpable buzz about the path the Jets are on. He said there will be bumps in the road along the way, but under Glenn's leadership the team should be able to handle adversity. "There's a pride that we had when we went to the AFC championship game when they went 1-15 and 2-14 the two previous years, especially as a drafted guy for him. Then to have the success playing together five years, it feels like we're heading in that direction again and we're exited about what lies ahead." As far as how practice went at camp on Tuesday, Glenn said the defense won the day. It was a mixed bag for quarterback Justin Fields, who at times showed great field vision and deep-pass ability. The hope is the team continues to gel before Week 1 of the regular season.

Aaron Judge returns from IL to Yankees lineup with New York mired in a 4-game losing streak

A change of venue Monday was not the cure for what's ailing the New York Yankees. But help is on the way. Manager Aaron Boone announced Monday after an 8-5 loss to the Texas Rangers that Aaron Judge would return to the lineup Tuesday after missing 10 games with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge was, indeed, listed in the Yankees lineup Tuesday as the designated hitter. He's batting in his usual spot at No. 3 in the order. He's not yet ready to return to his position in the outfield. Judge returns to the lineup on the heels of a four-game Yankees losing streak, including Monday's walk-off loss to the Rangers in extra innings. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Yankees blow lead, lose on walk-off The Yankees struck first with a leadoff home run by Paul Goldschmidt, then took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning. But the Rangers batted around in the second to take a 4-3 lead. The Yankees retook the lead and held a 5-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth. There, pinch hitter Joc Pederson sent it to extras. With the bases empty and one out, Pederson launched a 2-1 Devin Williams changeup over the plate into the right-field stands to tie the game at 5-5. The blown save was the third of the season for Williams, a two-time All-Star and lights-out closer with the Milwaukee Brewers. With Pederson's home run, Williams' ERA in his first season in New York inflated to 5.10. The blast set up Josh Jung for his 10th-inning heroics. With a man on second and two outs, the Yankees intentionally walked Wyatt Langford to get to Jung in the six slot. Reliever Jake Bird left a 1-1 sinker thigh-high and just inside that Jung turned on. The result was a no-doubt home run into the left-field stands that ended the game. Yankees in free fall, face critical games vs. Rangers The loss was the Yankees' fourth straight following an unprecedented three-game sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins. They're now 7-10 since the All-Star break. The defeat dropped the once first-place Yankees to 60-53, 5.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East and 2.5 games behind the rival Boston Red Sox, who won their sixth straight game Monday night. It also left them with a 1.5-game cushion over the Rangers and in a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the last wild-card spot in the American League. This three-game series against the Rangers could end up proving critical for the postseason standings, and it's already going bad for New York. Can Judge help Yankees turn things around? Judge hasn't played since July 25 with the elbow injury that landed him on the injured list. He took batting practice over the weekend and will return to the lineup Tuesday on his first day of eligibility. As the Yankees face a multitude of problems, Judge's return can't come soon enough.
