Thurles racecourse announces closure with immediate effect
THURLES RACECOURSE HAS closed with immediate effect and fixtures which had been scheduled for later in the year will not go ahead. The first ever recorded race-meeting at Thurles took place in 1732 and it has been in the hands of the Molony family since the early 1900s. Riona Molony announced the closure in a statement this morning. She thanked the 'extended racecourse family', such as staff, sponsors, the racing community, local businesses, and racegoers for their support. Thurles Racecourse is fully licenced to race until 31 December and has 11 prominent fixtures scheduled for the 2025/26 racing calendar. However, these meetings will not go ahead. Riona added: 'We're going to enjoy this time together and relax now the decision is made and the news is out before we consider our options.' 'Surprise to everyone in the industry' The CEO of Horse Racing Ireland, Suzanne Eade, described Thurles Racecourse as a 'cornerstone of the National Hunt programme in Ireland during the winter months'. She said today's announcement 'was a surprise to everyone in the industry'. However, she added that the announcement must have been a 'hugely difficult one' and that she 'respects their decision to take a step back from running racing at Thurles'. Eade remarked that Pierce Molony 'contributed significantly to the Irish racing industry for many years and the Molony family, led by Riona, certainly stepped up following his untimely passing' The Horse Racing Ireland CEO added that she will be seeking a meeting with the Molony family in the near future to discuss their position.

Brendan Rodgers: 'Someone else' will be Celtic manager if club does not keep building
BRENDAN RODGERS HAS delivered a clear message to the Celtic board – show ambition to drive the club forward or he will not extend his contract. Rodgers is entering the final season of his three-year deal and told principal shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Michael Nicholson that he is not interested in performing a maintenance job. The Celtic manager reiterated he would be going nowhere of his own volition before his contract expires but his long-term future remains unclear. Asked about his contract situation ahead of Celtic's Scottish Premiership opener against St Mirren on Sunday, Rodgers said: 'Dermot and Michael and I had a conversation over the summer on where we were at. 'I said: 'I'm very happy here'. There's conditions we want to be able to improve and be better because I'm not the type of manager that's good at maintaining anything. If it's just something to maintain, I'm not the manager of Celtic. It'll be someone else. Advertisement 'But to build and grow and develop and push, then of course I love being at Celtic. 'I'm not the one that's going to sit here and just maintain levels. My commitment here to Celtic is this is a really fast-moving club and you have to keep moving, move quickly. 'It's one of the biggest clubs in world football. It has a demand and an expectation on it and the only way you get better within that is by improving and developing.' Rodgers stressed he was not saying the club had to match his own ambition. 'I don't want to be really arrogant to say that,' he said. 'Celtic clearly has an expectation and should have an expectation because of the size of the club we are, and what the demands are here. 'What I'm saying, for clarity, I love being here. And, yes, there's been some challenges on and off the pitch since I've arrived, but that's management, that's coaching. But in the main, I've absolutely loved it here and I will continue to do so however long that is. But like I said, there has to be that ambition from everyone. 'In terms of my situation, I'm relaxed on it only because I know what I give every single day. And if the club choose to offer (a contract) and see that as the way forward, great. If not, it doesn't really matter to me in relation to what I give to the job. 'My ambition is for Celtic. It's not for me. My ambition is for Celtic to be the best that it can be. 'I've been in the game quite a long time now. So I think I understand what we need to succeed. We did that last year. We brought in certain players that helped our profile when we moved into the Champions League. And those players really helped us in the Champions League. 'So my ambition now is to keep us going in that direction. And that's what our conversations are about.' Rodgers has stressed the need to bolster their attacking options in recent weeks. Shin Yamada arrived as a belated replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi but the sale of Nicolas Kuhn to Como has compounded a lack of wide players following the long-term knee injury Jota suffered in May. Rodgers said: 'There's no doubt I would have liked to have had players in now, but it's not the case. I'm not going to kill my own joy and overthink. I focus on what's here. We know the work that we need to do and it's my responsibility to convince the club that we really need them. 'Clearly, I'm not doing that job as well as maybe what I can, but I will continue to pursue that because it's something that's really important for us.'

Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy to begin second leg of Secto Rally Finland in ninth place
The Irish crew of Josh McErlean/Eoin Treacy (Ford Puma Rally1) will begin Saturday's second leg of Secto Rally Finland in ninth place after a steady run through Friday's nine stages. Out in front in a tense battle and having taken the outright lead on SS3, Finland's Kalle Rovanpera (Toyota GR Yaris Rally1), who has never won his home event, leads the way - 4.9s seconds ahead of reigning World champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20 Rally1) whose team mate Adrian Fourmaux is 2.8s seconds further behind in third. Pre-event championship leader Ott Tanak (Hyundai i20 Rally1) took a 1.3s lead on Thursday evening's opening Harju street stage but it was Japan's Takamoto Katsuta (with his Fintona co-driver Aaron Johnston) and Rovanpera that shared top spot after Friday's opener before Rovanpera won the next two stages that included the fast Saarikas stage - a reversal of previous years. He arrived at the service park with a 4.4s advantage over Fourmaux with Finland's Sami Pajari (Toyota) just a tenth of a second behind in third, the latter also winning two of the morning's stages. Katsuta in fourth was followed by Neuville, who like many others, was of the opinion that the stages were too fast. "It's just pure taking risks.' Eight time World champion and last year's event winner Sebastien Ogier, who was trying to find a rhythm, concurred. "The roads are almost too fast in places - they're just flat out everywhere, not the most enjoyable in places." Meanwhile, the M-Sport trio of Martiņs Sesks, Josh McErlean and Gregoire Munster were having their own battle with Sesks leading the way 6.8s ahead of McErlean. Munster had a major slide on SS3 and overshot on SS4 and was 21.4s behind McErlean, who commented, "Takes a bit to get your head around, it goes better than you expect because everything's flat out, bit more commitment needed. "It should be easier (through the second pass) - onboards to look at where you're losing (time)." Rain made the afternoon stages tricky and difficult - each of the four stages in the Finnish countryside had a different winner before Fourmaux won the short Harju street stage as a composed Rovanpera, who admitted he took a few risks, continued to lead. Championship leader Ott Tanak, who had the task of opening the roads, ended the day in tenth - his Hyundai snapped under braking some 2km into SS7 and the front right took a heavy impact after it hit a tree, however, he was quickly back up to speed. Meanwhile, Donegal's Eamonn Kelly/Conor Mohan (Ford Fiesta Rally3) are second in the Junior WRC category - 14.9s behind leaders Taylor Gill/Daniel Brkic, the Irish crew were quickest on SS3.
