Ayr United given green light for Somerset Park works which include training complex, gym and new car park

The club has received planning permission for the first phase of its Railway End redevelopment.
Ayr United have been given the green light to proceed with redevelopment plans at Somerset Park.
The club's ambitious project to build a new training pitch, gym and overflow car park has received planning permission from South Ayrshire Council.

It will represent the first phase of work on land behind the stadium's Railway End, purchased for the club earlier this year by chairman David Smith.

United plan to construct a full sized training pitch for use by the men's and women's first teams and Academy setup. The facility will come complete with dugouts, mini "shipping container stands," and 15 metre high floodlights.
An overflow car park is also planned in the southern part of the site, catering for around 60 additional parking spaces in support of both the new facilities and existing stadium operations.
The club says its planned work, subject to relevant funding, will support its "long-term operational sustainability" along with "community outreach and wider training infrastructure."
The council received no statutory objections to the plans and a total of 70 representations were received - all of which were in support of the proposal.
Approving the plans, council officers said: "The proposal would deliver a new gym building and training pitch in an accessible location, integrated within the context of existing community sporting infrastructure.
"The facility will primarily support club training activity but may also offer scope for broader community engagement and use."

Welcoming the news today, United owner Smith told the Ayrshire Post: "Once again a big thanks goes to South Ayrshire Council for their co-operation and assistance in getting planning permission for the first phase of the Railway End redevelopment.
"It is another big step forward for the club, the town and our community."
Speaking earlier this year, Smith said: "Without doubt, this project should be the biggest of my time here. It's going to take a long time to realise the full potential and many years to develop what we want on the site. It's something of a blank canvas.
"The main thing is that Ayr United will have everything on site and the club can be self sufficient in that regard. That is a pretty big deal in my opinion and probably pretty unique in the Scottish football landscape.
"Building the likes of a training complex and gym at the stadium makes the club a far more attractive option to people coming here."

Lotto jackpot joy for Ayr United diehard Paul as he lands club's biggest ever payout

Paul Dougall scooped the massive pot and created a bit of history along the way. An Ayr United diehard reckons he's the luckiest Honest Man after landing the club's lotto jackpot today. Paul Dougall scooped a whopping £14,250 after matching all four of his numbers in the weekly draw. ‌ He admits his fortune is all the more remarkable - as he only signed up three WEEKS ago. ‌ Paul, 43, becomes only the second jackpot winner since the club lottery underwent a major revamp back in 2022. And his win is the biggest lotto payout ever in the club's history. The Prestwick dad-of-two told the Ayrshire Post:"I'm in a state of shock. When I saw that Martin Tocker (Ayr United's commercial boss) was phoning me, I presumed it was about match hospitality that I was looking to book. "When he told me the news, I couldn't believe it. I was a member of the old 5 Star Lottery and I've played the new version a couple of times over the years, but I'd only signed up again three weeks ago! "It just goes to show you that your luck can strike at any time. "The numbers are my own birthday and that of my two sons Jack and Lucas, and my wife Elizabeth. It's left me speechless if I'm honest." ‌ Paul comes from rich United stock with both his father and grandfather being proud Honest Men on the terraces before him - and now his sons are following in well worn footsteps. He added: "It's all I've ever known man and boy. I suppose following Ayr United is like being in lotteries - it's the hope that kills you! But after my luck with this, maybe this will be our season." Commercial boss Tocker said: "I was delighted to have another jackpot winner. ‌ "Paul is our biggest winner from any format in the history of lotteries at Ayr United and I was buzzing to call him with the good news. "The lottery has paid out just under £20,000 in the past few weeks and over £50,000 since the current format started in 2022. "I fully appreciate that supporters would love to see a substantial winner every week but that number represents a big payout over three years and when the jackpot goes, like today, it's a huge amount of money. "Perhaps more importantly, it is generating revenue for the football club in the region of £15,000 per year and helping us stay competitive on the park."
