Versant Taps ‘NBC Nightly News' EP Meghan Rafferty As Its Vice President Of News Standards
Rafferty will help set and maintain journalism standards for MSNBC and CNBC, as the cable networks prepare to be spun off from Comcast as part of the new company Versant. She will start in the role in September and will report to Brian Carovillano, SVP of standards & editorial partnerships for news.

Rafferty has been executive producer of Nightly News since 2021, and her departure comes following the broadcast's transition from Lester Holt to Tom Llamas as anchor. During her tenure, the newscast won a News and Documentary Emmy for Holt's interview with President Joe Biden, days before he ended his reelection bid, and also a George Polk award for the investigative series 'Dealing the Dead' and a Murrow award for best newscast in 2022. She joined Nightly News as senior producer in 2017.
Before Nightly News, Rafferty was with CNN for 10 years, producing Wolf Blitzer's interviews with world leaders. She also launched Christiane Amanpour's CNN program, working as the lead editorial producer. She also has helped produce presidential debates for CNN and NBC News in the 2012, 2016 and 2024 cycles.
With the loss of NBC News as a sister network, MSNBC has been building a news operation, hiring Scott Matthews as SVP of news gathering. MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler said in a memo to employees this week that the network has added more than a dozen journalists with more to be announced. The network is recruiting for nearly 50 positions in newsgathering, digital, audio and specials.

I mean, I didn't invent cooking shows. She's just doing her thing." Good thing no tabloids are writing about this as if it were a negative exchange!

MSNBC Host Predicts When Trump Could Pardon Maxwell
MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell made a bold prediction about when Donald Trump may use his power to free convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell. The Last Word host O'Donnell referenced Trump saying in 2020 of his former friend Maxwell, 'I just wish her well.' 'Donald Trump is, of course, in a position to make his own wish come true,' the host said. 'Donald Trump could pardon Ghislaine Maxwell, just completely erase her commute her sentence and release her from prison.' However, the MSNBC host added Monday that Trump may need to be politically strategic and delay Maxwell's early exit for a few years. 'That might be something that has to wait until Donald Trump's last day in office,' O'Donnell said, referring to 2029 when Trump will be 82. 'Because it could really hurt Republicans running for re-election next year, who have devoted their political lives to the support of Donald Trump.' He added, 'It could certainly hurt badly in the next presidential campaign.' O'Donnell then noted that if Trump freed Maxwell 'in exchange for her publicly insisting that she and Jeffrey Epstein were never really friends with Donald Trump, and that Donald Trump knew nothing about anything illegal that they ever did, well, the last day of the presidency would be the time for him to do that. And then Donald Trump's wishing her well will really come true.' Last Friday, Maxwell, 63, was moved from a prison in Florida where she was serving her 20-year sentence for sex trafficking to a cushy minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. That required the waiving of a policy designed to punish convicted sex offenders by keeping them held in at least a low-level security prison. The transfer was greenlit after Trump's former lawyer and current Deputy Attorney General, Todd Blanche, interviewed Maxwell over two consecutive days last month. O'Donnell also stated that Trump sending Blanche to talk to Maxwell in jail will 'send the message that friends of Donald Trump are above the law and too rich and too powerful to be held accountable.' He added, 'That is the message that sending Ghislaine Maxwell to the easiest federal facility sends to her victims.' Trump has not publicly revealed his thinking on pardoning Maxwell. He has said 'nobody has asked' him to pardon her, but also insisted he has 'the right to do it.' The Daily Beast has contacted the White House for comment.

Scarborough: Bondi ordering probe of Obama administration ‘extraordinarily stupid'
MSNBC pundit Joe Scarborough tore into President Trump and his attorney general Pam Bondi over her opening of a grand jury investigation into how Obama administration officials handled intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 election. 'It's extraordinarily stupid on so many counts,' Scarborough said. 'If you look at the timeline, the timeline doesn't add up. It's like when Donald Trump is saying that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton created the Epstein files. No, no, no, no. That all happened during Donald Trump's first term.' Former President Obama, Scarborough said, had 'nothing to do with' intelligence investigations around the time of the 2016 election. 'You look at the timeline here about what happened and when it happened, Barack Obama had nothing to do with this, by anybody's accounts, and especially by the Senate Republican Intelligence Committee run by Marco Rubio, who afterwards said that it was Donald Trump's 2016 campaign that created a 'grave intelligence counterintelligence threat to the United States of America,' the pundit continued. 'That was Marco Rubio, the current secretary of state. That was every Republican on the Senate Intel Committee after poring through all of the documents,' he continued. 'That's what they found.' Bondi on Monday said Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard 'exposed clear and blatant weaponization by corrupt intelligence officials acting at the behest of the Democrat Party and likely former President Obama' before the election that year. The accusations by Trump and his top officials led to a rare statement from the former president calling the president's comments a 'distraction.' Scarborough is a longtime critic of the president, who took some heat from progressives for traveling to Mar-A-Lago after the 2024 election to meet with Trump in an effort, he said at the time, 'to restart communications,' with the administration.
