Edinburgh's first 'queer cafe' announces closure as owners say 'this is only the beginning'

Yahoo27-07-2025
Edinburgh's first "queer cafe" has announced that they will be closing their doors for good this September.
Kafe Kweer opened back in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but with their lease set to end on Monday, September 1, they have made the decision to close for good after five years of service.
Sharing the news on social media, owners Oskar and Zak wrote: "Our lease ends on 1st September, and with this we have made the tough decision to shut our doors after 5 incredible years on that date. We do this entirely on our own terms, recognising a coinciding shift in our personal lives, creative goals, rising costs, and beyond.

"Kafe Kweer started as a manic project at the height of lockdown, after we saw a Facebook post advertising a small shop looking for new management.
"Everything was so uncertain at this time that we decided to just GO for it, with zero expectations and lots of risk. We thought we'd be lucky to last a year. And here we are exactly five years later, despite COVID, Brexit, cost of living crises, and being located in a quiet part of town."
But this isn't the end of Kafe Kweer, while they won't have the cafe anymore, the pair want to continue to host their social events and help queer people find community here in Edinburgh.
They continued: "Despite closing our physical space, we aim to keep using our platform and network to host some of our social events in other spaces, helping queer people find connection amidst this hostile world, and spreading the news about other local queer events/resources. The ethos and mission of what KK is about is more than one single shop could ever do, and we plan on continuing to be a hub for Edinburgh's queer community in one way or the other!
"We close our doors in September with our heads held high and our hearts very full with the love you've given us over the years. We know this'll be sad news for many, and it's a sad decision for us, but we believe in doing what we've always done: adapting and evolving.
"We'd ask that you all come see us this August for our last month open. We'll be selling a lot of our stock at bargain prices , hosting Fringe shows every afternoon, and probably crying a lot.
"This is only the beginning. Queer joy forever."

Pfizer CEO details talks with Trump administration on tariffs, Most Favored Nations pricing

Pfizer (PFE) CEO Albert Bourla said Tuesday he has a "special relationship" with President Trump, cemented during the COVID-19 pandemic when the two were in regular contact to help speed up vaccine production. That relationship, he said, has created a direct line to discuss some of the headwinds the company faces out of Washington, D.C. In his second term, Trump is targeting the drug industry for high prices and overseas production — threatening tariffs as high as 250% on imported drugs. But Bourla told Yahoo Finance he believes Trump and other officials in D.C. are having productive conversations with industry leaders about tariffs and drug pricing. "I think [Trump] is educated, of course he doesn't go into the details, it's not his job, but he understands the dynamics [of the industry]," Bourla said. When asked about the tariff threat, Bourla shared his understanding from his ongoing discussions. "I don't want to speak for the president, but what he said today, which was very important also, was that it would be a very small tariff in the first couple of years. And then he opened the window for a grace period. Because I had this discussion with him and I had this discussion with multiple other members of the administration," Bourla said. Read more: What Trump's tariffs mean for the economy and your wallet The industry is awaiting the results of an investigation by the administration into how those tariffs will be implemented — and Bourla said the devil will be in the details. Currently, more than 90% of prescriptions in the US are from generics, which are often the cheapest drug type. Branded drugs are often the most expensive and are largely produced in the US. But some early components of the manufacturing process, key chemicals known as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), are often made overseas in Europe or Asia. That will be important to understand when the final ruling for the tariffs is made. "We need to understand if the API will dictate the country of origin, or where the final product is made," Bourla said. Pfizer is also one of the companies that received a letter from Trump last week detailing demands to reduce prices for Medicare and Medicaid enrollees to match the lowest price paid by developing nations, known as Most Favored Nations (MFN). The company is currently planning for the implementation of reduced prices, as well as working on how to mitigate negative impacts, Bourla said. "We are still discussing it with the president. ... The devil could be in the details in these stages," he said. Man Who Lost 8,000 Bitcoin Now Worth $900 Million Wants To Tokenize Entire Wallet In Bid To Assert Claim On Dumped Fortune

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. James Howells, the man who has spent over a decade finding his misplaced hard drive containing over $900 million worth of Bitcoin (CRTPTO: BTC) riches, said Monday he has not given up despite repeated failures and will now tokenize his claim. Howell Changes Strategy After Bid To Buy Landfill Fails In an X post, Howells stated he made several attempts to negotiate with Newport City Council to allow him to search the landfill where the hard drive is believed to be, including public proposals, legal action, and even a formal offer of over $30 million. However, the council has consistently refused, citing environmental and logistical concerns. 'I am done asking permission,' the Wales-based software engineer said. His next plan of action involves tokenizing the entire wallet of 8,000 BTC into 800 billion Ceiniog Coin (INI), a Bitcoin Layer 2 token integrated with other blockchain technologies like Stacks, Runes and Ordinals. Trending: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — Howells told The Block that the idea is to launch a successful high-speed, high-scale, fast-confirmation, payment-focused web3 environment backed by 8,000 BTC and secured by the Bitcoin blockchain. The Newport City Council didn't immediately return Benzinga's request for comment. An Unfortunate Saga The bizarre incident dates back to 2013, when Howells' ex-girlfriend unintentionally dumped a hard drive containing 8,000 BTC in the trash. When he lost the legal bid to excavate the site, Howells turned toward President Donald Trump for help, possibly influenced by the U.S. president's pro-cryptocurrency stance. The 8,000 Bitcoins would be worth a whopping $984.73 million at the all-time high price of $123,091.61 and $913.34 million at the prevailing market price of $114,168.
