
These bird moms lay their eggs in other species' nest, and never come back for them
Most other baby songbirds in that situation would imprint on their adoptive mothers and grow up believing they were members of another species. Cowbirds, however, have no such identity crises.
"It's very clear that at a certain age they get very tired of their host parents and they want to get out of town," Mac Chamberlain, an ornithologist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, told As It Happens.
Previous research suggested that once the chicks were reared, their biological mothers would come back for them and teach them how to be cowbirds.
But a new study, published in the journal Animal Behaviour, found that's not the case. While they do eventually find other members of their own species, they get along just fine without mom.
Brood parasites
Cowbirds are what's known as brood parasites, meaning they allow other species to rear their young, often to the host nest's detriment.
Some birds are clever enough to recognize an unfamiliar egg in their midst and get rid of it. But once the cowbird hatches and starts squawking for food, most mothers will instinctively feed them, none the wiser of the deception.
Less than one per cent of bird species worldwide use this mating strategy, Chamberlain said.
"It's very cool and it's very novel, I think, compared to other birds," he said.
Some brood parasites, like cuckoo birds, go on a killing spree the minute they hatch, pushing their host siblings out of the nest to their untimely deaths so they don't have to compete for resources.
"Cowbirds are unique in the fact that they're nest sharers," Chamberlain said. "The only harm they really do to their nest mates is just being an extra mouth to feed."
While not as brutal as cuckoos, it's still not great for the host family.
"Cowbirds hatch earlier and start begging, many have argued, more frequently and more intensely [than their nest mates], and so they end up getting more food," Matthew Louder, a former scientist who studied brood parasites at Texas A&M University, told CBC.
"If you cannot bring enough food to feed your other ones, you might lose some of the other offspring."
If they reunite with mom, it's probably random chance
Within about a month, the little imposters leave the nest for good.
From there, Chamberlain says they have a short window to find an adult cowbird and learn the ropes before grouping together to migrate south.
It's not clear what happens if they don't find an adult in time, but Chamberlain says cuckoos who fail in this quest never learn their species-specific behaviours and local dialect, and end up ostracized from their flock.
In a 1995 study, researchers found and trapped pairs of adult and juvenile brown-headed cowbirds, sampled their blood, and discovered many of these duos were related.
The authors theorized the juvenile cowbirds were reuniting with their mothers before flying south. The mothers, they suggested, may even keep watch over their hatchlings from afar, then lead them out of the nest when it's time.
But this latest study was not able to reproduce those findings. Researchers spent three years capturing and genetically testing brown-headed cowbirds — 122 adults and seven juveniles altogether — and found the young birds were more likely to be found with unrelated female adults.
Scientists believe the juveniles find and latch onto adult females, in part, because they have similar looking plumage, but also because they're instinctively drawn to their chattering calls.
Louder says he was not surprised by the findings. In his own research, he says he'd already shown that juvenile cowbirds leave their nests all on their own.
But Chamberlain says this doesn't mean the 1995 study was flawed. This new research, he says, was conducted in Illinois, where cowbirds are more populous than on the east coast, where the previous study was carried out.
"If you're .... in an area where there's only really one breeding female cowbird, if you bump into a female cowbird, it's likely going to be your mom," he said.
Stephen Rothstein, a professor emeritus at the University of California Santa Barbara who wasn't involved in the study, says while the methodology is sound, the sample size of juveniles is too small to draw any hard conclusions.
Nevertheless, he said in an email that he agrees juvenile cowbirds are "unlikely to have a mechanism by which they can identify their biological parent from another adult cowbird."
But since cowbirds have defined territories, he says it's possible they'll meet their parents again, just by random chance.
While some might find this breeding strategy cold, the people who study cowbirds defend them passionately.
They're a native species doing what they're meant to do, says Louder, and they're no more cruel than hawks and other birds of prey who snatch up other birds or eggs to eat.
Except in rare circumstances where cowbirds heavily outnumber an endangered species, he says, they don't pose population-level threats to other birds.

This tree-killing beetle revealed its presence in B.C. when it flew into the wrong person
The tiny beetle could scarcely have picked a worse human to fly into. Amateur entomologist Andrew Short was sitting on a bench in downtown Vancouver in June 2023 when the unfamiliar metallic green beetle hit him and fell to the ground. He said he "needed to know what it was," so he captured it, took it home to photograph, and later handed it over to authorities — who confirmed the insect to be the first emerald ash borer collected in Canada west of Manitoba. Short's fortuitous encounter set in motion a chain reaction of research aimed at understanding and clamping down on the pest that has devastated ash forests across North America, killing millions of trees in Canada and the United States. "I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. So, if that's what some people consider fate, then I guess it was," he said in an interview. Short makes a hobby of searching for insects and plants, examining how they interact and photographing them. "I'm quite versed in invasive species and what they can do, but I certainly hadn't considered for a moment that I'd ever have a run-in with an emerald ash borer," he said. "It's kind of a strange feeling to realize that you've found something that's that important." Nearby park infested A study published this spring in the peer-reviewed journal BioInvasions Records describes Short's role in the beetle's discovery in Vancouver, and subsequent findings that included "heavily infested" trees in Andy Livingstone Park, about 300 metres from the site of his encounter near B.C. Place stadium. The study suggests emerald ash borers, which are native to East Asia, were likely first present in the downtown Vancouver park "no later than 2020." Lead author Chris MacQuarrie, a forest entomologist with Natural Resources Canada, said Short was "the best person" for the beetle to have run into, even if not from the beetle's perspective. "There are lots of green beetles and people think they've found it and they turn it in and we're really happy when it's not (an emerald ash borer). But this time, it was." He said the discovery in Vancouver represents a "big jump" from pre-existing infestations in Canada and the United States. MacQuarrie said Short had the "presence of mind" to capture the beetle, which he tucked into a makeshift container using material in his backpack, then took it home to photograph before enlisting the help of another hobbyist entomologist to identify it. All they could conclude, Short said, was that it "was something that shouldn't have been here." Short submitted a suspected invasive species report along with photographs of the beetle to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. He eventually met with someone from the agency and handed over the bug, which he had frozen. After the agency confirmed Short's beetle was an ash borer, MacQuarrie said he and other researchers met in Vancouver last year to investigate. They set traps and took samples from trees near the bench. While the traps did not capture any adult ash borers, branch samples yielded 19 larvae. MacQuarrie said the closest infestation in Canada is in Winnipeg, though there is another population in Oregon. Beetles fly under the radar The researchers could not determine how the beetle was introduced to Vancouver, although the pest is commonly dispersed via infested wood. An infested tree found in nearby Burnaby last year suggests the beetles in Vancouver could be an "extension" of an older infestation that went undetected, the study says. The beetles often go undetected for years in new places, with sick or dead trees usually the first sign of infestation. The findings in Vancouver suggest there may be other undetected populations in western North America, the study says. Short's discovery has given researchers the opportunity to study the beetle's behaviour in Vancouver. It grows faster in warmer conditions, and researchers "don't really know" how fast it may kill trees in Vancouver's maritime climate, MacQuarrie said. Early detection allows for mitigation measures such as insecticides, removing infected trees, diversifying the tree canopy and educating the public, he said. The Vancouver finding has sparked interest elsewhere, MacQuarrie added, with a British forestry researcher starting work with Canadian counterparts to examine how the beetle is behaving in European ash species in the city. Short said some people think his bug-catching hobby is "weird." But it's calming, he said, slowing down and focusing on what is right in front of you. "You don't have to look far to find really cool things."

Parents' social media use could affect their kids even after they log off, new research warns

(AP Photo, File) Many people try to limit the time they spend on social media when they're with their kids. But new research suggests social media use has a significant effect on interactions with children — even when adults aren't looking at their screens. Mothers who were in the habit of spending more time on social media talked much less to their kids when they played with them than did moms who spent less time on social networks, and that difference carried over when they weren't using their devices, according to a study to be presented Tuesday at the Digital Media and Developing Minds International Scientific Congress in Washington, DC. While past research has focused on how kids are affected when parents or guardians are on their screens, this study looked at the impact of cell phone use on parent-child interactions even when parents were offline, said Liz Robinson, a doctoral student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and lead author of the study. Mothers who used social media extensively spoke 29% less to their kids while playing with them — without their phones — compared with the moms whose social media use was low. Moms in the low-use category used social media an average of 21 minutes per day, while moms in the high-use category used social media an average of 169 minutes per day. Other uses of screens, including checking email or the weather, weren't associated with talking less to kids, according to the study of 65 toddlers ages 2 through 5 years old and their mothers in Alabama. Although Robinson's research has not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a journal, it doesn't surprise me. In my own research, people often say they still think about what they see on social media long after they log off. Although the moms in this study were physically present with their kids, it's possible their minds were elsewhere. 'Often our minds wander to activities that are more pleasurable naturally, and we know social media is that experience for most people,' said Kris Perry, executive director of Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development, a nonprofit to help kids lead healthy digital lives and the organizer of the Congress. Perry, who was not involved in the research, pointed out that social networks show us tailored content that is intensely interesting to us, so 'it makes you want to experience it longer.' Whatever the reason, kids need their parents to be mentally present when they play. Thankfully, there are things we can do to make sure our social media use doesn't interfere with our parenting. Talk to your kids even as they get older One of the most important things parents can do is to talk to their children all the time. Learning language is 'a major feature of optimal child development' and it's 'dependent on children expressing and receiving language from birth through (age) 18,' Perry said. Greater exposure to language tends to improve kids' brain development, academic outcomes, communication skills and language, she said. The interactions parents and kids have when they play are also important to children's socioemotional development, Robinson said, to help them develop their executive functions and attention spans and learn how to regulate their emotions. Interacting with adults is also one of the ways children learn what to prioritize. 'Kids are acutely aware of where a parent is looking,' Robinson said, 'and they learn what's important. So, when our gaze is constantly going towards a device, towards a smartphone, well, we're communicating to our children what's important in that moment, too.' Carve out kids-only time That's why parents should make a conscious effort to be mentally present when interacting with their kids. 'Our attention is one of the best things that we can give to our children,' Robinson said, noting that this conveys to them that we love them. Robinson recommended that parents set aside certain times of the day to give their kids undivided attention. That's advice I also give when I speak to parent groups and at schools about how to handle kids' social media use. Of course, finding this time isn't easy. 'None of us can give our kids undivided attention all the time, but it can be helpful to think on a smaller scale,' Robinson said. 'Though I have many things to tend to today, I can give my child undivided attention for the next 15 minutes. That focused time goes a long way from the child's perspective.' When we're with our kids, we can remind ourselves 'there is nowhere but here, and there is no time but now in your child's mind,' Robinson said. 'And so, you have many other thoughts and many other priorities that are floating around in your head. But we can compartmentalize those and be fully present with our child, who knows only this moment, and only our attention.' Use social media less often Parents should also pay attention to how their social media use is affecting them and their children, Perry said. 'Understand what the impact of using social media is on you personally, and make sure that you're mitigating what those impacts are when you go to interact with your child.' A simple way to do that? Limit the number of times you check it per week and how long you spend on it each time. 'Reduce the amount of time you're on social media to prevent the likelihood that you would even inadvertently speak less' to your child, Perry said. And, of course, using social media less could also free up more time for parents to spend playing with their kids. Robinson said the biggest limitation of the research is that it's correlational — the authors couldn't establish whether social media was making parents more passive or whether more passive parents were using social media more. In addition, the study couldn't account for factors such as parents' mental health, income and education. I'd also love to see this study replicated with fathers, who should also be taking responsibility for playing with their kids and using social media responsibly. Still, the study suggests using social media more could reduce our conversations with our children, and that got me thinking. Next time I play with my daughters, I'll be checking in with myself on whether I'm talking to them or my thoughts are elsewhere. I'll also be more conscious of how much the content I'm seeing on social media is continuing to play out in my head even after I'm done scrolling. I might even talk to my kids about the changes I make as a result.

The biggest piece of Mars on Earth is going up for auction in New York

(AP Photo/Richard Drew) NEW YORK — For sale: A 54-pound (25-kilogram) rock. Estimated auction price: US$2 million to $4 million. Why so expensive? It's the largest piece of Mars ever found on Earth. Sotheby's in New York will be auctioning what's known as NWA 16788 on Wednesday as part of a natural history-themed sale that also includes a juvenile Ceratosaurus dinosaur skeleton that's more than six feet (two metres) tall and nearly 11 feet (three metres) long. According to the auction house, the meteorite is believed to have been blown off the surface of Mars by a massive asteroid strike before traveling 140 million miles (225 million kilometres) to Earth, where it crashed into the Sahara. A meteorite hunter found it in Niger in November 2023, Sotheby's says. The red, brown and gray hunk is about 70 per cent larger than the next largest piece of Mars found on Earth and represents nearly seven per cent of all the Martian material currently on this planet, Sotheby's says. It measures nearly 15 inches by 11 inches by six inches (375 millimetres by 279 millimetres by 152 millimetres). 'This Martian meteorite is the largest piece of Mars we have ever found by a long shot,' Cassandra Hatton, vice chairman for science and natural history at Sotheby's, said in an interview. 'So it's more than double the size of what we previously thought was the largest piece of Mars.' It is also a rare find. There are only 400 Martian meteorites out of the more than 77,000 officially recognized meteorites found on Earth, Sotheby's says. Hatton said a small piece of the red planet remnant was removed and sent to a specialized lab that confirmed it is from Mars. It was compared with the distinct chemical composition of Martian meteorites discovered during the Viking space probe that landed on Mars in 1976, she said. The examination found that it is an 'olivine-microgabbroic shergottite,' a type of Martian rock formed from the slow cooling of Martian magma. It has a course-grained texture and contains the minerals pyroxene and olivine, Sotheby's says. It also has a glassy surface, likely due to the high heat that burned it when it fell through Earth's atmosphere, Hatton said. 'So that was their first clue that this wasn't just some big rock on the ground,' she said. The meteorite previously was on exhibit at the Italian Space Agency in Rome. Sotheby's did not disclose the owner. It's not clear exactly when the meteorite hit Earth, but testing shows it probably happened in recent years, Sotheby's said. The juvenile Ceratosaurus nasicornis skeleton was found in 1996 near Laramie, Wyoming, at Bone Cabin Quarry, a gold mine for dinosaur bones. Specialists assembled nearly 140 fossil bones with some sculpted materials to recreate the skeleton and mounted it so it's ready to exhibit, Sotheby's says. The skeleton is believed to be from the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago, Sotheby's says. It's auction estimate is $4 million to $6 million. Ceratosaurus dinosaurs were bipeds with short arms that appear similar to the Tyrannosaurus rex, but smaller. Ceratosaurus dinosaurs could grow up to 25 feet (7.6 metres) long, while the Tyrannosaurs rex could be 40 feet (12 metres) long. The skeleton was acquired last year by Fossilogic, a Utah-based fossil preparation and mounting company.
