Uber Intercity grows to 3,000 routes; unveils premium Motorhomes service

Uber adds 1,000 new routes in intercity push; pilot of luxury Motorhomes to offer TV, lavatory, and mini-fridge for premium getaways starting August 7

Uber has expanded its Intercity services across India by nearly 50 per cent, now covering over 3,000 point-to-point routes. Company executives expect this growth trajectory to continue in the next calendar year as demand for intercity travel picks up.
"We are growing roughly in the range of 40 to 50 per cent year-on-year. I think that's the kind of growth we continue to anticipate for the years to come, and hopefully even break that record," said Shweta Mantri, head of rider verticals at Uber India and South Asia, speaking on the sidelines of a company event in New Delhi on Thursday.
Among the most travelled Intercity corridors over the past year were Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Agra, Bangalore–Mysore, Lucknow–Kanpur, and Ahmedabad–Vadodara—especially around long weekends and holidays. Fridays emerged as the most preferred departure day, with travellers choosing early morning hours or the mid-afternoon lull (2 PM–3 PM) to beat traffic.
To further accelerate adoption of Intercity services, Uber announced the pilot of a premium offering—Motorhomes—in Delhi's National Capital Region. The one-month pilot, starting August 7, is aimed at travellers seeking luxury and comfort for short getaways.
Bookings for Motorhomes will open on August 4 and can be made through the Uber Intercity or Uber Reserve options. The vehicle can accommodate four to five riders and comes equipped with premium amenities including a television, lavatory, microwave, and mini-refrigerator—effectively creating a private lounge-on-wheels.
"Our objective is to bring this elevated experience to life for our consumers, see how the pilot goes, what the demand is, and other factors," said Mantri. She noted that given the nature of the offering, pricing will be higher than Uber's regular services.
The pilot coincides with the onset of India's festive season and a string of long weekends—periods during which rider interest typically spikes. Uber expects strong demand around Diwali, Holi, Eid, and the summer wedding season.
With Intercity travel on the rise and premium services being tested, Uber aims to enhance its platform with both scale and variety, catering to budget-conscious travellers and those seeking curated experiences.

Plans afoot to increase sales in Aavin Trichy: Minister

Trichy: Besides increasing the quantity of milk procurement, Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (Aavin) has started focussing on marketing and sales as well, said minister for milk and dairy development T Mano Thangaraj. The minister on Friday inspected work for a new ice cream plant at the Kottapattu dairy complex here. Ice cream, curd, and lassi produced at the plant will be supplied to Aavin parlours in Trichy and delta districts. He also inspected modernisation work carried out at 3.3 crore to automate the milk processing unit there. "Aavin's sales in Chennai have been increased by 6-7 crore. Similarly, we would set a target for the Trichy Aavin to increase sales. Focussing on the Diwali festival, we would initiate plans to increase the supply of our products and meet the demand," he said. The Trichy unit procures around 2 lakh litres of milk every day and supplies around 4.5 lakh milk sachets in four variants. To improve milk quality and ensure economic production, Trichy Aavin's second generation unit is being upgraded by the state govt. The minister added that required workforce is being recruited by Aavin through TNPSC or on a contractual basis. "We ensure that new recruits were provided with insurance and provident fund benefits."

Amid lab-grown rise, Tanishq launches diamond expertise centres

Amid the growing popularity of lab-grown diamonds, jewellery giant Tanishq has launched three new diamond expertise centres in collaboration with the De Beers Group. These centres aim to provide buyers with clarity and transparency, ensuring value to the customer through a technology-backed evaluation system. "There is a lot of confusion caused by the emergence of lab-grown diamonds, and we expect the prices of lab-grown diamonds to keep decreasing as the technology to create them evolves. More customers are now asking if we're selling natural or lab-grown diamonds, and it is this confusion we want to eliminate," said Ajoy Chawla, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the jewellery division at Titan Company. Currently, these centres are located in three stores in Bengaluru, but the company plans to expand them to 200 stores in the ongoing financial year (FY26) and eventually roll them out across all 599 stores nationwide. Commenting on gold prices, Chawla told Business Standard that the surge in gold prices has led to ticket-size driven growth, with diamond-studded jewellery also witnessing increased buyer demand. In its quarterly update to the exchanges in early July, the company reported an 18 per cent growth in its jewellery domestic operations for the first quarter (Q1FY26), which was marked by gold price volatility. The company is also observing a shift towards lightweight and lower caratage jewellery among customers. In response, Tanishq has piloted 9-carat gold jewellery under its Mia brand in several coastal markets to assess the impact of humidity. A Mia official told Business Standard earlier this week that the collection, consisting of 25 offerings, will be fully launched before Diwali. Having become a household name over the past 30 years, Tanishq has catered to over 1.3 crore customers to date, with almost 52 lakh purchasing diamond-studded gold jewellery. Speaking about the US tariffs of 25 per cent imposed on Indian exports, Chawla said, "It's too early to react. We should not get carried away, as these tariffs may change over time."
