Russian boxer Anastasia Luchkina facing backlash after giving orangutan vape pen in shocking scene

New York Post15 hours ago
Puffing on a vape pen at the zoo is bad enough, but a young Russian boxer somehow managed to do one far worse.
Anastasia Luchkina, 24, handed her e-cigarette to an orangutan at the Taigan safari park in Crimea, as seen in shocking footage she shared.
The creature later exhibited 'disturbing' behavior,' according to Russian outlet zamin.uz.

The orangutan, who is named Dana and is the only of its kind in Crimea, has reportedly lost her appetite, refuses to interact with others and 'lies motionless throughout the day.'
She has lived in the safari park since 2018.
The orangutan is feared to have swallowed the cartridge of the e-cigarette, which contains between 2.5-3 ml of nicotine liquid.
Veterinarians are expected to continue with their examination of Dana, with results to arrive in the coming days.

Dana is part of an endangered species of orangutans listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
'I didn't know Anastasia was a smoker,' Luchkina's coach, Vladimir Akatov, told reporters, per zamin.uz. 'She is currently on vacation. We will definitely discuss this matter when she returns.'

The incident elicited outrage from many on social media.
'She should be arrested and be imprisoned for life for endangering this innocent animal,' said one X user.

'Generation of idiots,' wrote another, with several others agreeing the boxer should face significant punishment.
PETA UK vice president Mimi Bekhechi shared a similar sentiment, telling SunSport: 'Anastasia Luchkina must have received a few too many knocks to the head if she thinks it's a lark to give an orangutan a vape…a violation of this intelligent, gentle ape's welfare.'
Luchkina, from the Russian city of Pyatigorsk, lost her only pro fight to Indian boxer Vinashki at the King of Himalayan Ring in Himachal Pradesh, India, on June 22.

‘Siberian Jesus' sentenced to Russian prison after harming followers in bizarre cult

A Siberian cult leader who claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ was sentenced to 12 years in a Russian prison camp after his conviction for physically and financially harming his followers. Sergei Torop, a former traffic policeman known to his followers as 'Vissarion,' meaning 'he who gives new life,' and two aides used psychological pressure to extract money from his followers and cause serious harm to their mental and physical health, Reuters reported. Torop, 64, set up the Church of the Last Testament in a remote part of Siberia's Krasnoyarsk region in 1991, the year the Soviet Union broke up. He was one of three men convicted Monday in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. Torop and Vladimir Vedernikov were sentenced to 12 years, and Vadim Redkin was sentenced to 11 years in a maximum-security prison camp. 4 Vissarion, who has proclaimed himself a new Christ, conducts a service during the 'Holiday of Good Fruit' feast in a village southeast of Russia's Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, August 18, 2010. A bearded self-styled mystic with long hair, Torop claimed to have been 'reborn' to convey the word of God. He attracted thousands of followers, some of whom flocked to live in a settlement known as the 'Abode of Dawn' or 'Sun City' at a time when Russia was battling poverty and lawlessness, according to Reuters. 4 Children of Vissarion community sing during the morning religious service in Petropavlovka village, some 700 kms southeast of Krasnoyarsk, August 18, 2003. Russia jails senior defence official for 13 years in corruption trial

By Mark Trevelyan (Reuters) -Russian former deputy defence minister Timur Ivanov was found guilty of corruption and condemned to 13 years in a penal colony on Tuesday, the harshest sentence yet in a series of graft cases against defence officials. Ivanov was arrested in April 2024 on suspicion of taking bribes, and investigators added new embezzlement charges in October. More than a dozen people, including two other former deputy ministers, have been arrested in investigations into separate cases. The trial was closed on grounds of state secrecy. Anton Filatov, a former logistics company boss on trial with Ivanov, received a 12-1/2 year sentence. State media reported that the total sum embezzled was 4.1 billion roubles ($48.8 million), mostly in the form of bank transfers to two foreign accounts. Ivanov, who pleaded not guilty, was stripped of all state awards and the court confiscated 2.5 billion roubles worth of property, cars and cash from him. Russian media said he and his wife owned a luxury apartment in central Moscow, a three-storey English-style mansion on the outskirts of the capital and an extensive collection of classic cars including a Bentley and an Aston Martin. Russia's "Z-bloggers", an influential group of war correspondents, have voiced outrage at the scale of corruption reported in the defence establishment while young Russians are dying fighting in Ukraine. One blogger, Alexander Kots, said 13 years was a long sentence but corrupt defence officials should be put on trial in wartime as "traitors to the Motherland". SHOIGU DEPUTIES Ivanov had since 2016 been responsible at the defence ministry for big logistics contracts including those related to property management, housing and medical care. He was a deputy to Sergei Shoigu, who was replaced as defence minister last year but retains an important role as secretary of President Vladimir Putin's Security Council. Two of Shoigu's other former deputies have been arrested in separate investigations. In April, the former deputy head of the army's general staff, Lieutenant-General Vadim Shamarin, was sentenced to seven years in a penal colony for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. The prosecutions signal a drive by Putin to clamp down on graft, inefficiency and waste in Russia's huge military budget as it wages war in Ukraine. Defence spending accounts for 32% of the federal budget this year. Ukraine has also moved to clamp down on military corruption. A deputy defence minister in charge of weapons purchases was sacked in January, while in April authorities accused five suspects of involvement in a procurement scandal.

Trump administration raises possibility of stripping Mamdani of US citizenship

The Trump administration has raised the possibility of stripping Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City, of his US citizenship as part of a crackdown against foreign-born citizens convicted of certain offences. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, appeared to pave the way for an investigation into Mamdani's status after Andy Ogles, a rightwing Republican representative for Tennessee, called for his citizenship to be revoked on the grounds that he may have concealed his support for 'terrorism' during the naturalization process. Mamdani, 33, who was born in Uganda to ethnic Indian parents, became a US citizen in 2018 and has attracted widespread media attention – and controversy – over his vocal support for Palestinian rights. Donald Trump was asked on Tuesday about Mamdani's pledge to 'stop masked' Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents 'from deporting our neighbors'. The US president responded: 'Well, then, we'll have to arrest him,' Axios reported. Mamdani posted a statement on X in response. 'The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported. Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let Ice terrorize our city,' he wrote. He continued: 'His statements don't just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation.' Controversy over his immigration status follows a chorus of Islamophobic attacks on his Muslim faith following his victory in last week's New York mayoral primary, when he finished first in a field that included Andrew Cuomo, the former New York state governor and favored candidate of the Democratic establishment. It also comes after the Trump administration instructed attorneys to prioritize denaturalizing foreign-born US citizens who had committed specified crimes. A justice department memo instructs lawyers to institute proceedings against naturalized citizens who ares suspected of having 'illegally procured' naturalization or having done so by 'concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation'. Ogles wrote to Pam Bondi, the attorney general, calling for an investigation into Mamdani after his Democratic mayoral primary victory on the grounds that 'he may have procured US citizenship through willful misrepresentation or concealment of material support for terrorism'. As evidence, he cited a rap song by Mamdani, entitled my love to the Holy Land five, in which he called members of a foundation convicted of supporting Hamas 'my guys'. He also referred to Mamdani's refusal to condemn the phrase 'globalize the intifada'. In an accompanying post on X, Ogles wrote: 'Zohran 'little muhammad' Mamdani is an antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy the great City of New York. He needs to be deported.' Asked about Ogles's call, Leavitt said: 'I have not seen those claims, but surely if they are true, it's something that should be investigated.' The justice department has confirmed receiving Ogles's letter but has not commented further. Chris Murphy, a Democratic senator for Connecticut who has become one of the Trump administration's most effective critics, called the demand to denaturalize Mamdani 'racist bullshit'. 'Trump will stop at nothing to protect billionaires and price gouging corporations, even racist bullshit like this,' he wrote. 'Zohran won because he ran a campaign laser focused on putting power back in the hands of working people. And that's a threat to the Mar-a-Lago crowd.' Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, has had his social media posts and previous political activism fiercely scrutinized since last week's election victory, which was accompanied by promises of leftwing populist policies for New York if he is eventually elected mayor. Amid a chorus of rightwing vitriol, Donald Trump has called him 'a pure communist' and has threatened to cut off funds to New York if Mamdani becomes mayor and 'doesn't behave himself'. At a news conference at the official unveiling of a new detention centre for immigrants in Florida's Everglades, Trump reiterated his communist remark and referred to allegations that Mamdani had obtained his citizenship 'illegally'. 'We don't need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I'm going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation. We send him money, we send him all the things that he needs to run a government,' Trump said. 'We're going to be watching that very carefully. A lot of people are saying, he's here illegally. We're going to look at everything, but ideally, he's going to turn out to be much less than a communist. Right now he's a communist, that's not a socialist.' Mamdani also commented on the fact that Trump praised Eric Adams, the current New York City mayor who is struggling in his re-election campaign and switched from representing the Democratic party to running again as an independent. Trump said Adams was a 'good person' whom he had 'helped out a little bit', referring to the US justice department in April dismissing a federal corruption case against Adams. Mamdani said in his post: 'That Trump included praise for Adams in his authoritarian threats is unsurprising.' Joanna Walters contributed reporting
