IHC orders girl's Poland visit to meet mother

Express Tribune09-07-2025
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday directed a citizen to take his daughter to Poland to meet her mother, in a case involving a custody dispute.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani issued the order while hearing a petition filed by the girl's Polish mother, Anna Monica, who is seeking custody and visitation rights for her daughter.
The court also sought records regarding prior attempts to facilitate online meetings between the child and her mother, noting that such contact had been denied.
The petitioner's lawyer told the court that despite repeated efforts, the father had not arranged any virtual meeting through WhatsApp or other platforms. In response, the father's counsel argued that a trial court had already dismissed the mother's custody plea and that the father was restricted from travel due to his inclusion on the no-fly list.
Justice Kayani, however, made it clear that the child must be allowed to meet her mother and emphasized the court's intention to handle the case impartially.
He observed that children are the real victims in parental disputes and reiterated that the court cannot resolve personal matters between spouses, only ensure that the rights of the child are protected.
The judge remarked that if the girl spends time with her mother, she would eventually adjust to the situation.
He directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) not to obstruct the father's travel to Poland and emphasized that while the father is free to go wherever he wishes, he must not mislead the court.
The hearing was adjourned until September.

Senators decry judicial overreach

A 12-member panel, headed by Adviser to PM on NHLH Irfan Siddiqui, was constituted by PM. PHOTO: FILE Listen to article The Senate on Friday took exception to the Islamabad High Court's (IHC) move to issue stay orders on matters under discussion in parliamentary committees. Terming it a serious breach of privilege, the lawmakers called for the matter to be referred to the Senate's Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges. They also urged that the attorney general be summoned to explain the judiciary's overreach into parliamentary affairs. During the session, chaired by Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) objected to the stay orders issued by the IHC and Lahore High Court (LHC) against upper house proceedings. "I have never seen stay orders against parliamentary proceedings before. This should be taken seriously," he said, urging the Senate to summon the attorney general. "We never interfere in court proceedings, but judges issuing stay orders against committee actions is direct interference in Parliament. It's becoming a joke." Shahadat Awan supported the call. "We will seek input from the law minister and summon the attorney general for clarification and action." Senator Anusha Rehman said such actions violated Article 66 of the Constitution and constituted a breach of privilege. "Issuing a stay order against a member of Parliament is a direct attack on their privilege," she said, urging the House to refer the matter to the privileges committee and have those responsible appear before it. "No one can stop us from speaking in this House," she added. Senator Kamran Murtaza expressed concern over reports of lawyers being picked up in Balochistan. "If someone has committed a crime, they should be punished under the law," he said. The Presiding Officer responded that a report on the matter would be sought.

Govt urges crackdown on 'digital terrorism'

The government on Friday urged the social media companies to immediately remove terrorist contents from their platforms using artificial intelligence (AI), stressing global cooperation against digital terrorism, including data sharing. Addressing a joint press conference in Islamabad with Minister of State for Law Barrister Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry emphasised that the removal of terrorist contents from social media did not intended to silence freedom of expression, but to build a wall against the menace. "I want to request social media operators and platforms to cooperate with us on the blockade and removal of accounts, taking measures to stop mirror accounts and to share information of account holders who are operating these accounts," Chaudhry said. Earlier this week, Chaudhry had highlighted how a terrorist group was using WhatsApp channels to "disseminate hateful content and harmful narratives". He told the joint presser that 2,417 complaints related to terrorism on social media were under consideration by the relevant authorities. "Pakistan is a bulwark against terrorism. We have detected hundreds of social media accounts linked to terrorism. Outfits like TTP, IS-K, BLA and BLF are spreading propaganda and recruiting youth through the social media," he said. On the occasion, Barrister Aqeel said that terrorism and propaganda were punishable offenses under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca). "Pakistan has demanded closure of terrorist accounts, automatic blocking, and access to data from social media platforms," he said.

Rupee appreciates amid FIA crackdown

The Pakistani rupee extended its gains for the third consecutive day on Friday as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intensified a nationwide crackdown on illegal currency exchange operations and hawala-hundi networks, arresting hundreds of suspects and recovering millions in illicit assets. According to FIA officials, the operation is being carried out based on credible intelligence received from reliable sources, leading to major action against unlicensed foreign exchange businesses and underground money transfer networks. So far, 282 suspects have been arrested in 256 raids. In addition, 213 criminal cases have been registered, and authorities have recovered a total of Rs762.27 million from the suspects. Numerous shops involved in illicit transactions have also been sealed. Law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) have been providing full support in tracking and apprehending the accused. FIA Director General Raja Riffat Mukhtar stated that all available resources are being utilised to arrest hawala and hundi operators. He emphasised that those engaged in smuggling foreign currency will face severe consequences, backed by solid evidence gathered during the crackdown. He also warned that the FIA is closing in on international agents linked to these criminal networks. Raja reiterated the agency's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against illegal currency exchange and informal money transfer systems. He assured the public that action will continue until the networks involved in these unlawful activities are eliminated. The crackdown comes at a time when the government is striving to stabilise the economy and curb the flight of foreign exchange through unofficial channels. The FIA's ongoing efforts are being seen as a major step toward restoring legality in financial transactions across Pakistan. On Thursday, Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (ECAP) Chairman Malik Muhammad Bostan said that a senior officer of the country's premier spy agency met with currency exchange firms this week to address a sharp slide in the rupee, prompting a crackdown on "black market dollar trade". The action helped stabilise the open market rate and the rupee recovered against the dollar on Thursday, Bostan told Reuters. "The dollar is down one rupee today in the open market. This is because we're finally getting the supply we need," he added. Bostan on Friday told The Express Tribune that the dollar's downward movement is expected to continue on the back of the ongoing crackdown on hawala and hundi networks. Bostan advised importers against panic buying. "They will get dollars at cheaper rates soon," he added. The rupee closed the week on Friday with upward trajectory for the third straight day, gaining further ground against the dollar in both the interbank and open markets. In the last three days, the greenback lost Rs2.30 in the open market, closing at Rs286.60 to a dollar. In the interbank market, the dollar depreciated by 75 paisa, settling at Rs283.70. Bostan attributed the rupee's recovery to increased dollar sales by exporters, who are capitalising on the declining value of the greenback. He predicted that the dollar could fall further to hover between Rs270 and Rs280. (WITH INPUT FROM OUR KARACHI CORRESPONDENT)
