Doctors sound alarm over surge in teens hooked on 'Gen Z's favorite weight loss fix'

Daily Mail30-04-2025
A record number of American teenagers are hooked on Zyn nicotine pouches, new data shows.
In 2023, just three percent admitted to using the pouches, which are loved by young people for their appetite-suppressing effects.
But by 2024, within just one year, this number had rocketed to 5.4 percent — an 80 percent leap.
'This growing public health issue needs more attention,' said Dr Dae-Hee Han, a public health scientist from California who led the research.
'Parents, teachers and pediatricians should be aware that teen nicotine pouch use is increasing across the nation,' Dr Adam Leventhal, also a public health scientist involved in the study, added.
Users credit Zyns with a myriad of health benefits, from more confidence to better sexual performance and even weight loss, with some dubbing it 'O-Zyn-pic'.
But the pouches also have a number of negative health effects, including nicotine addiction, sores emerging in the mouth and gums. They have previously been linked to heart trouble in teenagers.
Some researchers have also linked their use during adolescence to harm to brain development and problems with learning, memory and attention.
Nicotine pouches are small, white pouches inserted between the lips and the gums, where they release nicotine into the bloodstream over the course of about an hour.
Nicotine suppresses appetite by activating specific receptors in the brain that tell the body it is not hungry, even when it may not be.
This mechanism is thought to be related to the 'fight or flight' response, where the body prioritizes energy conservation during stressful situations.
The trend was revealed in a study published in JAMA Network Open, and based on data from the Monitoring the Future survey — an annual survey launched in 1975 that asks students about their substance use.
The study analyzed data from 10,000 survey participants in the 12th grade — aged 18 years — and 10th grade — aged 15 to 16 years.
The team also found that more teenagers reported using nicotine pouches in the past 30 days and past 12 months, as well as using both pouches and e-cigarettes, compared to 2023.
A total of 2.6 percent of teens said they now use them every day, compared to 1.3 percent in the previous year.
And 4.6 percent admitted to using them at least once in the past 12 months, compared to 2.4 percent saying this in 2023.
The use of vapes declined among teens over the same period, the survey showed.
In 2023, 20 percent of teenagers admitted in the survey that they vaped, but by 2024 this had dropped to 17.6 percent — down by 13 percent.
The number reporting using both e-cigarettes and pouches increased from 2.1 percent to 3.6 percent over the same period.
Overall, teenagers who were male, white and living in a rural area were found to be more likely to be using nicotine pouches than their counterparts.
Dr Leventhal urged: 'To reverse this trend, we need to heighten public awareness about pouches and educate youth about them.
'Policymakers might also consider ramping up regulation of the booming pouch market — including cinnamon, fruit and other attractive flavors — to protect youth.'
The scientists were from the Keck School of Medicine, at the University of Southern California, primarily located in Los Angeles.
Nicotine pouches are often sold in a variety of flavors to appeal to youth, just like electronic vapes have been to also get teenagers hooked.
Zyn and other nicotine pouches are typically sold at gas stations, convenience stores and smoke shops around the country - in most places one could find tobacco products.
A pack of 15 pouches sells for $5-$10 and are sold in two different strengths of nicotine: 3 milligrams and 6mg.
Nicotine pouches have been available in the US for at least a decade, and are sometimes marketed as being less dangerous than other nicotine products.
FDA officials say they contain fewer harmful ingredients than cigarettes and other types of chewing tobacco including snuff — dry powder inhaled through the nose — which are linked to cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
Regulators have also found that a 'substantial portion' of adults who previously smoked switched completely to nicotine pouches.
Several celebrities have been pictured using nicotine pouches like Zyn, likely boosting their popularity.
Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson said in October 2022 that he enjoyed Zyn and the product could work as a 'male enhancer,' though there is no evidence of this. Carlson has since said this comment was a joke.
He has now started his own brand of nicotine pouches called Alp.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was reprimanded by the NFL for putting a Zyn in his mouth while on the sidelines of a game.
Actor Josh Brolin has shared he's so addicted to an unspecified brand of nicotine pouches he sleeps with them in his mouth.

Butterbean's heartbreaking admission about weighing 500lb before one moment that changed his life

Former boxer Butterbean was bed-bound for the best part of a year after finding himself immobilised due to his weight, but the American has opened up on one thing that helped him turn his life around Butterbean has explained believing in himself when the odds were stacked against him was instrumental to overcoming a deep-seated depression. The heavyweight boxer made quite the name for himself in the 1990s and early 2000s, tipping the scales at between 300 and 400lbs for his fights while dispatching of a wealth of big-name opponents through his sheer knockout power. ‌ But after retiring from the fight game in 2013 with a professional record of 77-10-4, Butterbean – whose real name is Eric Esch – saw his weight skyrocket to an all time high in excess of 500lbs. ‌ It led to him needing a wheelchair for mobility and doctors telling him that he would never walk again. ‌ What followed was a cruel depression which left the 58-year-old bed-ridden for the best part of a year, only leaving his room to go to the toilet. Speaking about his darkest hours in conversation with Mirror Fighting via Lucky Energy, the Atlanta-born bruiser said: "It was horrible. My hips were so bad, I couldn't walk. And if you can't walk, you're going to gain weight. I was way over 500 pounds." He added: "A lot of fighters do get depressed. A lot of actors and celebrities, people that are in the public eye a lot do get depressed a lot. People don't realise that. When you can't walk and you can't walk into the store and get something to drink, you do get depressed. "I was in bed for almost a year, not got out of bed, just to go to the bathroom. And I ate in the bed. I mean, I didn't even leave the bed." So what changed which allowed Butterbean to crawl out of the hole he was trapped in for so long and undergo a remarkable body transformation which has seen him shed down to an all-time low of 285lbs? According to the man himself, it all came down to self-belief. ‌ He explained: "But once I started believing in myself, life is good. I spend more time with my grandkids and I got 10 of them. I got 10 little boogers running around. So life is just really good right now. I'm just blessed." Butterbean also credits his incredible weight-loss journey to former WWE star 'Diamond' Dallas Page and his stellar yoga programme. He explained: "Guess what? I'm not in a wheelchair no more. "I went and moved to DDP for a while, did his yoga programme, and I'm in the best shape of my life right now. I feel better now at 50-something than I did when I was in my 20s, which is insane. I can't explain it, but the Fountain of Youth, I dove in it and I come out so much better." ‌ It's not just friends and family that have been left in awe of Butterbean's accomplishment in shifting weight and flipping poor mental health on its head either. The legend even claimed that he received a letter from a fan who said that he saved their life after they saw his remarkable change of physique. When asked about his family's reaction to him gearing up for a potential return to the squared-circle in the near future, he replied: "Well, they know if I set my mind to something, that I'm not changing it. And helping other people... ‌ "I've got a letter, one letter really just says, it sets in deep how he watched my recovery and he was about to end his life. And because of my success, he goes, 'You know what? I do have something to look for. I have people that care about me and I have a life that I can live if I just put a little bit more effort.' "That meant a lot to me when somebody tells you that just by something you've accomplished made them believe in themselves. That made me feel better. It's like when you cook a really good meal and you get a lot of compliments. It was that same thing." Butterbean has made it no secret that he hopes to have one last dance in the squared-circle before calling time on his boxing career for good, with a number of opponents on his mind including Mike Tyson and Tyson Fury. However, nobody has managed to get his blood pumping quite like YouTuber-turned-pugilist Jake Paul. ‌ In a mock-up press conference to promote the launch of his new Butterbean's Knockout Punch with Lucky Energy, Butterbean is seen abandoning the wheelchair he relied on before taking to the microphone to address reporters. He then says: "Butterbean's back for one more fight. "There's only one fighter out there that wants to fight retired, bald guys. Jake Paul, I'm coming for you. I want to fight Jake Paul because he runs his damn mouth too much."

Bacon will be perfectly crispy in 45 seconds using this unusual method

This easy method for cooking bacon will save you time and effort when cooking up your next fry up It might not top the list of healthiest breakfast, but sometimes nothing hits the spot quite like crispy rashers of bacon. Whether you're enjoying them alongside soft, yolky eggs and a splash of tomato sauce or sandwiched between slices of fresh bread on a lazy summer morning, bacon remains a beloved treat. ‌ But what if you could enjoy that indulgent bacon fix with less hassle, fewer calories and in a fraction of the time it takes to fry? Surprisingly there's a quicker and cleaner way to cook bacon - all you need is a microwave. ‌ At first, the idea of microwaved bacon might not sound especially appetising. But food experts say it can deliver delicious results that rival traditional frying - without the oil, the splatter or the washing-up, the Express reports. ‌ Whether you prefer smoked or unsmoked rashers, this method is fast, easy and surprisingly effective. How to cook bacon in the microwave According to BBC Good Food, it's simple: ‌ Line a microwave safe plate with some sheets of kitchen roll Lay your bacon rashers flat, making sure they don't overlap If you prefer softer bacon, cover the plate with a microwave safe lid Set your microwave to high power (if adjustable) and cook according to your desired crispiness: For medium crispy bacon - 1 minute per rasher. Extra crispy bacon - 2 minutes+ per rasher Check the bacon halfway through cooking to ensure it's cooking evenly and turn over if necessary If you like American style bacon, just extend the cooking time until you reach the perfect crunch. ‌ This method is backed by other food websites and bloggers, for creating the perfect rasher of bacon in minutes. The Healthy Recipe Blog says: "This bacon is absolutely amazing. I resisted the idea for a long time, thinking it couldn't possibly be as good as pan-fried or oven bacon." The blog's host admitted that they were wrong, saying: "Happily, I was wrong! Using the microwave to cook bacon is just as good as using the oven or a frying pan. The bacon cooks evenly and comes out perfectly crispy. And it's a fast method - faster and easier than any other." ‌ "You can use this bacon like any other bacon! It's an obvious breakfast choice," they continued. If you have any leftover bacon, or you have just over estimated how much you can eat, the blogger gives tips for storage, saying: "You can keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. Once they are cool, I store them in a resealable food storage bag." The best part of this method is there is no oil needed. Meaning you are skipping the extra calories that come with pan frying bacon.

Netflix's 'terrific' comedy axed after four series as fans left 'heartbroken'

Netflix's much-loved comedy Resident Alien has been brutally axed after four series - with fans left devastated by the sudden news ahead of the sci-fi show's big finale Netflix users have been left heartbroken after one of its hit comedies was cancelled after four series. American sitcom Resident Alien - which is available for UK viewers on Netflix - will be coming to an end after its four series. ‌ The Syfy comedy stars Alan Tudyk as Harry Vanderspeigle - an alien who crash lands in Patience, Colorado and assumes the identity of a human doctor that he killed. Despite being sent to Earth to destroy the human race, he begins to question the reasoning behind his mission as he grows attached to those around him. ‌ The show's creator Chris Sheridan announced today: "I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season. ‌ "Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending." He added to TV Line: "I'm so proud of how good Season 4 is and especially proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that is probably my favourite episode of the series." ‌ Fans of the show quickly took to X to vent their frustration at the news. One wrote: "Resident Alien was one of the funniest shows and this season the show has gotten even better. So bummed more people didn't give it a look. Alan Tudyk is a delight and the rest of the cast were great. #ResidentAlien." While a second wrote: "With the TV market increasingly saturated with cheap reality shows, procedurals, and sequel shows, it is so hard to find a truly unique but terrific show. That's why I'm very sad to see Resident "Alien is canceled. Alan Tudyk is amazing in it and it is wildly amusing." ‌ A third complained: "Awww man. I haven't finished season 3 yet but I love this show." While a fourth said: "It's worth pointing out that #ResidentAlien not only had yet another great episode with drama, comedy and plenty of great character moments, but they did it with just a few minutes of VFX. Clearly, it's cost-effective to give them another season." "NOOO THIS IS SOME B******T. I love this show sm i rlly hope the rest of s4 brings it to a satisfying ending," another wrote. "gonna miss my fav alien," they added, alongside a broken-heart emoji. Others were hopeful that the show may find another life on a different network or streamer. "Streaming might finance a final season if needed," one fan said. Another added: "Hope they shop it around to streamers, the show is fantastic."
