3-Day Backlog Hits GPO After New Postal System Rollout
1 2 Nagpur: With the rollout of the new Advanced Postal Technology (APT) 2.0 system across post offices, including in Nagpur, citizens are facing long queues at post offices, including at the General Post Office (GPO), primarily due to technical glitches after the new system's installation. When TOI visited the GPO on Tuesday, several people were seen standing in long lines outside the Speed Post counter, many holding letters, official documents, and rakhis, eager to send them before the festive deadlines. The APT 2.0 system, developed by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT), Mysuru, aims to streamline postal services, improve transaction processing, and offer a more user-friendly interface. Officials said that while the new system faced initial hiccups, most modules are now functioning smoothly. They attributed Tuesday's long queues primarily to the weekend closure and technical glitches on Monday, which was the first day of the system migration. As a result, more people turned up on Tuesday to complete their pending postal work, said officials. "There was some rush due to the weekend holidays and the initial glitches during the migration on Monday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Private Browsers That Keep You Safe vividtrendlab Undo But the system is stabilising now," said a senior postal official at the GPO. "This is just the second day, so a few issues are expected. Our technical team is on standby and resolving the glitches as soon as they occur." The new interface now supports smoother operations, especially for online payments and UPI transactions, which earlier often faced failures or lag. "In the older system, there were frequent interruptions during digital payments. With APT 2.0, things are already looking better," the official added. APT 2.0 is being rolled out mainly in two phases. The pilot phase began on July 22, covering a few offices, including Amravati, while the second and major phase was executed on August 4, covering most of the remaining offices across India. Those waiting in line, however, were not as optimistic. "I've been waiting here for over 30 minutes. The staff is cooperative, but the system still seems slow," said Meena Deshmukh, who was accompanying her friend at the office. Another customer, a 60-year-old who was sitting under a tree opposite the Speed Post booking office, said, "This should've been done after the festival rush. The timing is unfortunate. Even yesterday, there were delays. Hopefully, it gets sorted today, or else we will have to come tomorrow again." While India Post officials have assured smoother functioning in the coming days, the impact of the migration continues to be felt on the ground, with people hoping that the convenience promised by the new system arrives sooner rather than later.

SAP Labs India opens second campus in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: The world's biggest business software company, SAP, on Tuesday launched a second R&D campus in Bengaluru at an investment of Rs 1,800 crore. When fully constructed, the campus will give SAP the capacity to nearly double its workforce in the country to 30,000. The campus, near the international airport in Devanahalli, was inaugurated by chief minister Siddaramaiah. Others present on the occasion were state IT minister Priyank Kharge, German ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann, and a host of SAP's global leaders, including executive board member Thomas Saueressig, supervisory board member Gerhard Oswald, CTO Philipp Herzig, and India MD Sindhu Gangadharan. Union electronics & IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw delivered a video message. SAP Labs, as the R&D division is called, has over 17,000 employees in India, of which over 11,000 are in Bengaluru. The new 41-acre campus is an addition to the 22-acre Whitefield campus in the city. The SAP management has approved a second phase of construction in the new campus, and Gangadharan said that is expected to finish by the third quarter of 2028. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You will never turn off your computer again. Undo Asked about future hiring, she said SAP Labs India has been hiring 1,500 to 2,000 people every year, and indicated that was likely to continue. "We have some of the best talent in the world here," she said. Saueressig described the campus as "not just a physical space….(but) a new chapter of innovation, innovation out of India for the world that will power all the large enterprises around the globe." He noted that more than 87% of the world's commerce goes through SAP systems, and said "here in Bengaluru, we have the opportunity to redefine what enterprise software will look like in the future, especially considering we are entering the age of AI. " The company has software for almost all of the core processes in an enterprise – lead-to-cash (end-to-end life cycle of selling to and servicing customers), total workforce management, design-to-operate (connecting all stages of a product's lifecycle, from design & development through to production, logistics, and operation), strategic sourcing and procurement. Teams in India are integral parts of every one of the solutions, and Saueressig said AI is now being infused into all of those solutions. Gangadharan said there's no separate AI team in the company, instead "every SAP employee will be an AI developer."

Homi Bhaba university asks state for 10,000-sq-ft space for satellite campus
Mumbai: Dr Homi Bhabha State University (HBSU), Maharashtra's only govt cluster university, is seeking 10,000 square feet of built-up space from the state govt to establish a satellite campus. The university is in talks with the govt to seek the campus in a location that is well-connected by the city's railway network, to make it accessible for students, even from the underprivileged background. HBSU, which currently comprises six prominent colleges, including Sydenham College, the Institute of Science, and the historic Elphinstone College, is planning significant expansion over the next five years. This includes both the introduction of new academic programmes and the development of additional physical infrastructure. Established in 2019 with four constituent colleges, HBSU recently added two more institutions to its cluster. The cluster university, which recently set up a Section 8 company (non-profit) for innovation and startups and also a tinkering laboratory, needs physical space for the project too. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Unforgettable Cars from the Past Undo A govt official said they understand the university's requirements and will look into it. HBSU has already diversified into fintech programmes, but in the next five years, with a target of increasing enrolment by 20-25% per year, it also plans to diversify with programmes in emerging technologies and equipping all its students with digital skills. "We are looking at offering varied undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programmes in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cyber security, blockchain technology, quantum computing, robotics, internet of things, among others. The other direction of growth is in the area of climate change, sustainability and green economy. There is a lot of scope towards carbon accounting and green finance and students can make use of the city as a living laboratory to engage with pressing challenges such as waste management," said Rajanish Kamat, vice-chancellor, HBSU, adding the humanities and sciences departments will also start inter-disciplinary programmes in health informatics and digital health. The university was recently sanctioned a funding of Rs 20 crore under PM-USHA scheme, part of the disbursed fund was used to set up an IoT laboratory on campus. The university's current student strength is 7,000.
