Ukraine's Zelensky seeks strong Poland ties before nationalist takes office

PHOTO: EPA WARSAW/KYIV - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on June 28 it was 'extremely important' for Kyiv to maintain friendly ties with neighbouring Poland, where incoming nationalist leader Karol Nawrocki opposes Ukraine's Nato bid. Mr Nawrocki won Poland's presidential election this month after a campaign in which he criticised Ukraine and accused Mr Zelensky of 'indecent' behaviour towards his allies. Poland is one of Ukraine's closest allies and has served as a crucial logistics hub for Western military aid to help Kyiv's war effort against Russia's now more than three-year-long invasion. Mr Zelensky hosted outgoing Polish President Andrzej Duda in Kyiv on June 28, ahead of Mr Nawrocki's inauguration on Aug 6. 'Poland is now preparing for the inauguration of its new president, (Karol) Nawrocki,' Mr Zelensky told reporters alongside Mr Duda. 'We will do everything in our power to ensure that relations between our countries only grow stronger.' He added it was 'extremely important' to preserve mutual support and understanding between the two nations. Poland has taken in over a million Ukrainians since Russia's invasion of the country began in 2022. But anti-Ukrainian sentiment has grown in recent years, intensifying during the election campaign. In May, Mr Nawrocki said Ukraine 'has not shown gratitude for what Poles have done' and accused Mr Zelensky of 'insolence'. While pledging to back Ukraine's war effort, Mr Nawrocki has criticised some of the support measures granted to Ukrainian refugees. Mr Duda said he believed Mr Nawrocki would 'build the best possible neighbourly relations' for the future of both countries. 'From behind the president's desk, the world looks a little different than... especially from the position of a candidate in the elections,' Mr Duda said, when asked about Mr Nawrocki's future ties with Ukraine. Poland's departing president asks Ukraine to be patient as successor settles in

REUTERS/Toby Melville/File Photo Poland's departing president asks Ukraine to be patient as successor settles in WARSAW/KYIV - Poland's departing President Andrzej Duda visited Ukraine on Saturday and urged Kyiv to be patient during the handover to his nationalist successor, Karol Nawrocki. Polish president-elect Nawrocki has said he is committed to keep helping Ukraine's defences against Russia's invasion, but has signalled a possible shift in Warsaw's position by opposing Kyiv joining Western alliances such as NATO. "Please be patient," Duda told reporters at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. "The world looks different from behind the presidential desk, slightly different from what it looks like to a candidate in elections." Zelenskiy said he would "of course" invite Nawrocki to Ukraine after he assumes office. Duda's visit was a final gesture of solidarity from one of Ukraine's most vocal wartime supporters as he prepares to hand over the presidency in August. He was welcomed warmly and awarded an Order of Liberty by Zelenskiy, who is trying to rally support among Kyiv's allies at a crucial juncture in the grinding war with Russia. Ukraine is struggling to fend off Russian advances on the battlefield and intensifying missile and drone attacks on its cities as diplomatic efforts to end the fighting, now in its fourth year, have faltered. Neighbouring Poland, where more than 1 million Ukrainians have sought refuge since Russia's February 2022 invasion, has provided key humanitarian, political and military support to Kyiv. Israeli strike on south Lebanon kills one

The attack comes a day after Israel killed a woman and wounded 25 other people in strikes across the country's south. PHOTO: REUTERS BEIRUT, Lebanon - An Israeli strike on southern Lebanon killed one person on June 28, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, the latest attack despite a ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. In a statement, the ministry said that an 'Israeli enemy' drone strike on a car in Kunin, south Lebanon, killed one man in a preliminary toll. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident. The attack comes a day after Israel killed a woman and wounded 25 other people in strikes across the country's south. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that the woman was killed in an Israeli drone strike on an apartment in the city of Nabatiyeh. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said on social media that the army 'did not target any civilian building'. The attacks on June 27 included a 'wave of successive heavy strikes' in the Nabatiyeh region which injured seven people, according to the NNA. The Israeli military said it 'identified rehabilitation attempts made by Hezbollah beforehand and struck terror infrastructure sites in the area'. Mr Adraee said the civilian building 'was hit by a rocket that was inside the (fire and defence array) site and launched and exploded as a result of the strike'. Israel has repeatedly bombed its northern neighbour despite the November ceasefire that aimed to end over a year of hostilities with Hezbollah. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani river, some 30 kilometres from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region. Israel was required to fully withdraw its troops from the country but has kept them in five locations in south Lebanon that it deems strategic.
