Police union boss urges CPD to stop using service weapon alleged to misfire
The Sig Sauer P320 is popular with local and federal law enforcement and personal gun owners but in the past few years has become the focus of dozens of complaints nationwide over claims it can accidentally misfire.
'I believe all of our members carrying this gun should ask for administrative duty, effective immediately,' FOP Lodge 7 president John Catanzara told WGN. 'If I'm on the street, is it going to go off and hurt me, hurt my partner, hurt a citizen? What about my kid at home while I'm getting ready to go to work? It's just so many concerns.'
In 2023 WGN's Nexstar partners at NewsNation obtained videos of the weapon allegedly misfiring. Juries last year sided with gun owners in Pennsylvania and Georgia in their lawsuits against the manufacturer.

Catanzara said the Chicago Police Department's arsenal committee voted weeks ago to ban the Sig Sauer P320 but it remains in use. In a Friday letter to police Supt. Larry Snelling, Catanzara asked him to cover the costs of the switch for each of the roughly 1,200 officers using the weapon. That's about 10 percent of the force.
'You are personally and morally going to be subjecting yourself to some major traumas should you have one of these incidental misfires because the department was too lazy or too cheap to solve it faster,' the union leader said.
Milwaukee's police department has already ceased use of the weapon. Catanzara said Chicago's force is the largest using the P320 and that once they're pulled, 'it's going to be a snowball down the hill. Everybody's going to have to ban it nationwide.'
Sig Sauer denies the gun has a safety problem.
'The P320 cannot, under any circumstances, discharge without a trigger pull – that is a fact. The allegations against the P320 are nothing more than individuals seeking to profit or avoid personal responsibility,' the company said in a statement last month.
Catanzara acknowledged that there are differences of opinions about the dangers of the gun within the department but said that if the department has already made moves to ban the weapon, it should proceed with urgency due to liability concerns.
WGN's request for comment from the Chicago Police Department and Mayor Brandon Johnson's office about the weapon went unanswered.

FBI, DHS warn of ‘lone wolf' July 4 attacks
(NewsNation) — As millions of Americans prepare to celebrate this Fourth of July holiday weekend, authorities across the country are on alert for potential lone wolf attacks. Ongoing global conflicts, as well as possible copycats, have prompted a notice from federal law enforcement agencies urging the public to stay vigilant. Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffendaffer told NewsNation that lone wolf attacks are the most common type of terrorism in the U.S. 'If you look over the past five years, 93% of attacks in the West have been by lone wolves,' she said. Federal agencies across the country are telling people to be aware, with the most concern about that lone wolf style of attack during this Fourth of July holiday week. With the holiday falling on a Friday, it's going to be a busy one and a lot of folks are taking time off already. In a joint bulletin, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies said individuals or small groups motivated by political, racial or personal grievances are most likely to target large gatherings like the Macy's fireworks show in New York City, or other celebrations across the country. The agency has also warned about potential copycat attacks following the New Year's Day incident in New Orleans. Individuals shouldn't be paranoid, Coffindaffer said, but should be paying attention to their surroundings. 'How can you get out of a particular corridor that you might be in if something bad were to happen? Are you looking to make sure that the street blockades are in the proper location, and if not, you can notify somebody,' she said. 'How about social media? Have you seen anything coming across your social media that is wrong, where people are threatening or doing something?' They say global conflicts, including tensions with Iran and the Israel-Hamas war, are also contributing to that heightened threat environment. The Department of Homeland Security told News Nation it's enhancing security measures right now and coordinating with federal, state and local partners to keep celebrations safe. Coffindaffer said those measures can include things like barricades and removal of things like trash cans, which could be used to conceal an explosive device, as well as monitoring crowds. 'You're looking for everything from backpacks being left to suspicious activity of individuals, sometimes people dressed in inordinately warm clothing,' she said. Officials emphasize there are no specific credible threats at this time, and they are just asking people to stay vigilant and if they see something, say something.

'Senseless violence': 4 killed, 14 injured in drive-by shooting in Chicago
Four people were killed and 14 were injured in a drive-by shooting in Chicago's River North neighborhood July 2, police said. The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. when a dark-colored vehicle drove by and fired into a crowd of people standing outside before immediately fleeing the scene, the Chicago Police Department said in a statement to USA TODAY. The incident occurred outside Artis Restaurant and Lounge, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed during a news conference. The deceased victims included two men 24 and 25 and two women ages 26 and 27, police said. The injured ranged in ages from 21 to 32 and were taken to area hospitals. Three of the injured were in critical condition: One was shot in the back, a second was shot in the leg and another in the mouth. The 18 people were shot "in a matter of seconds," Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference. Police have not made any arrests and were investigating the morning of July 3. "Clearly, there was some target. This wasn't some random shooting where someone just decided that they were going to shoot at this particular group of people," Snelling told reporters. He said police do not yet know the motive for the shooting. Multiple shell casings were found at the scene including ones that appeared to be from a rifle, Snelling said. Artis Restaurant and Lounge was hosting a party for local rapper Mello Buckzz when the shooting occurred, outlets including WGN and the Chicago Sun-Times reported. "Last night, an act of violence happened within the vicinity of our restaurant – and it shook us deeply," Artis said in a post to social media, adding that it was created as a safe space for people of color, LGBTQ people and allies. "This moment is painful – but it only strengthens our commitment to holding space for those who need it most." The restaurant said it was working with authorities. Police have ordered the restaurant to close during the ongoing investigation. Mello Buckzz posted on social media after the shooting, saying "Prayers up for all my sisters god please wrap yo arms around every last one of them." In a separate post she added: "I don't wish this typa pain on nobody." The incident was one of two mass shootings in Chicago the night of July 2, Mayor Brandon Johnson said. The other left four victims hospitalized on the far south side. Chicago police are planning to increase their presence during the Fourth of July weekend around popular areas where people gather, including the lake front, beaches and parks, Snelling said. Johnson said he was "frustrated and angered by this senseless and cowardice act of violence." "Shootings like these are a tragic reminder of how far we still have to go as a city," he said.
