Austin Reaves has turned down max contract extension offer from Lakers

USA Today2 days ago

Some people think the Los Angeles Lakers should or even need to trade emerging guard Austin Reaves this summer in order to become legitimate championship contenders next season. But it has seemed as if the Lakers would like to keep Reaves, and Reaves has said he wants to be a Laker for life.
However, the path to him being a Laker for life has gotten more complicated.
He has a player option for the 2026-27 season that he can turn down in order to become a free agent next offseason. Perhaps that is the path he is on, as he reportedly turned down a maximum contract extension offer from the team.
Via The Athletic:
"League sources told The Athletic that Reaves formally declined a max extension with the Lakers this week that would've paid him $89.2 million over the next four seasons," wrote Dan Woike. "He's about to start the third year of a four-year, $54 million contract he signed as a restricted free agent in 2023 — also the max number he could receive from the Lakers at the time.
"He can opt out of that deal and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, when he's expected to command significantly more than the most lucrative extension the Lakers were allowed to offer this summer."
Fortunately, Reaves declining that extension doesn't necessarily mean he's considering leaving the Purple and Gold.
"The decision, league sources said, wasn't a reflection of Reaves and the Lakers' relationship. Instead, it's almost a foregone conclusion considering the limitations placed on the amount the Lakers were allowed to offer this week.
"Reaves' upcoming potential free agency meant his name was floating in and out of rumors on the first day of the NBA Draft. The Lakers have never shown interest in trading Reaves and continue to hold him in high value."
Reaves, who went undrafted in 2021 out of the University of Oklahoma, averaged 20.2 points and 5.8 assists a game and arguably played at an All-Star level, which led people to say the Lakers now had a "Big Three" of Reaves, LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
The Lakers have steadfastly refused to include Reaves in any trade discussions over the last year or two.

Wisconsin's Greg Gard, John Blackwell react to Utah Jazz selecting John Tonje in NBA Draft

Wisconsin basketball head coach Greg Gard and starting shooting guard John Blackwell shared their reactions to John Tonje being selected with the No. 53 overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft on Thursday. After selecting Rutgers' standout Ace Bailey at No. 5 overall and 2025 NCAA champion Walter Clayton Jr. at No. 18, the Utah Jazz snagged the former Badger late in the second round on Thursday. Shortly afterwards, his former running mate John Blackwell took to social media to share a quick congratulatory tweet: "So proud of you man!" Blackwell wrote. "God is so good! You deserve it [for real]!" Tonje's head coach, who witnessed him seamlessly transition into UW's program as the go-to offensive option during the 2024-25 campaign, also chimed in: "We are so happy for John," Gard told "He's worked for a long time for this moment and has scratched and clawed his way to being an elite player. Utah is going to love what he brings to the organization. He's humble, mature and selfless, along with having a relentless drive to get better every day. He was an absolute joy to coach at Wisconsin and I'm ecstatic to watch his career unfold in the NBA." Throughout Wisconsin's 27-10 campaign, Blackwell and Tonje captained the Badgers to signature wins and a trip to the Big Ten Tournament's title game. In doing so, UW secured a No. 3 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament before falling to BYU in a 91-89 thriller. In that contest, Tonje and Blackwell combined for 58 of Wisconsin's 89 points off 16-of-32 shooting from the field, 6-of-16 from 3 and 20-of-23 from the charity stripe. The two were the unquestionable engine of UW's offensive attack. Blackwell would go on to test the NBA waters before withdrawing and returning to college, enabling him to focus on his mission in Madison while uplifting his former teammate and friend to achieve his dreams. While in Madison, Tonje averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting a terrific 46.5% from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line. That output was enough to net him second-team All-America honors, a first-team All-Big Ten nod and a Naismith Memorial Semifinalist finish. Tonje will now look to make a professional statement when the Utah Jazz begin summer league action from July 5-7 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The three-day circuit will also feature the Memphis Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Philadelphia 76ers. Adou Thiero on two NBA players he's trying to learn from

As the Los Angeles Lakers look to restock their roster with more complementary talent nearly five months after the Luka Doncic trade, they're hoping that incoming rookie Adou Thiero will be part of their core for years to come. They acquired his rights on Thursday after he was the No. 36 pick in the draft, and he seems to have the natural tools to become a legitimate rotation player, if not a starter, someday. While he cannot shoot straight from the perimeter, he's very athletic and attacks the basket relentlessly, and he has the ability to disrupt things on the defensive end. If he pans out, the 6-foot-8 forward could be the type of two-way wing the Lakers need more of. He joined Los Angeles-based Spectrum SportsNet for an interview and said he's studying two of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA to model his game after them. 'I watch a lot of defenders, trying to pick up on what they do in the league, that's a different level. It's a lot of different stuff offensive players do in the league, so just trying to pick up off of OG Anunoby, Jrue Holiday, he's a great defender. Just picking up on what they do, watching how they play defense.' Anunoby, who plays for the New York Knicks and helped transform them into contenders when they traded for him midway through last season, is an excellent perimeter defender who also averaged 18.0 points a game this season and is a dependable 3-point shooter. Holiday is one of the best defenders at the point guard position, and he absolutely covers opponents like a straitjacket. He helped the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics win the NBA championship in 2021 and 2024, respectively. The Lakers are hoping for similar results as Thiero gets acclimated to his new surroundings.
