Japan's Nikkei Stock Average Rises Ahead of BOJ Policy Decision

Yomiuri Shimbun4 days ago
TOKYO, July 31 (Reuters) – Japan's Nikkei share average gained in early trading on Thursday as market participants focused on the Bank of Japan's policy statement due later in the day for interest rate clues.
The Nikkei .N225 rose 0.5% to 40,842.88 by 0058 GMT. The broader Topix .TOPX gained 0.4%.
The BOJ is widely expected to keep interest rates steady at 0.5%, but investors will search for hints in the policy statement and accompanying quarterly outlook report on when the central bank is likely to resume rate hikes.
The central bank's decision does not come at a specified time, but usually comes some time after 0200 GMT, with Governor Kazuo Ueda giving a press conference from 0630 GMT.
Traders have firmed up bets for the BOJ to resume raising rates from as early as October since Tokyo reached a long-awaited trade agreement with Washington earlier this month, removing a degree of uncertainty from the economic outlook.
'A hike by the end of the year is becoming more priced by markets,' Tapas Strickland, head of market economics at National Australia Bank, said in a podcast.
'If that tentative trade deal with the U.S. holds, then that should provide a little bit more confidence for the economy, just given where inflationary pressures are at the moment.'
On Thursday, shares of companies that benefit from a drop in copper prices outperformed, with Fujikura 5803.T and Furukawa Elecric 5801.T each rallying about 6%.
Earnings also lifted some stocks, with Kyocera 6971.T jumping 8.4%, while Nissan Motor7201.T rose more than 3%.
At the other end, Panasonic Holdings 6752.T slumped 3.5%, and chip-testing equipment maker Advantest 6857.T lost 2.4%, extending declines to a fourth straight session.

Tokyo stocks drop on concerns over US economy after weak jobs data

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks fell Monday, with the Nikkei index briefly diving over 2 percent, fueled by concerns over a U.S. economic slowdown following weaker-than-expected jobs data. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 508.90 points, or 1.25 percent, from Friday at 40,290.70. The broader Topix index finished 32.45 points, or 1.10 percent, lower at 2,916.20. On the top-tier Prime Market, main decliners were led by bank, mining and service issues. The U.S. dollar briefly declined to around the 147 yen line in early morning trading after weakening sharply in New York on Friday after U.S. employment data for July showed a slowdown in the labor market, fueling speculation that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates soon. But the U.S. currency later rose to the upper 147 yen zone in Tokyo, as it was bought back amid a rise in U.S. Treasury yields, dealers said. The Nikkei stock index briefly slipped below the 40,000 threshold for the first time in about two weeks, as an increase in U.S. nonfarm payrolls fell short of market expectations, while the figures in May and June were revised sharply downward. "Investors were somewhat optimistic about the U.S. economy, but they grew cautious as labor indicators pointed to a slowdown," said Masahiro Ichikawa, chief market strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management Co., adding that the market was also surprised by the downward revisions. Banking and other financial stocks were notably sold as hopes for improved profits receded after long-term interest rates declined. Stocks later recouped some of their losses as investors hunted for bargains, brokers said.

Vietnam's VinFast opens 1st India plant, seeks local sourcing

The firm is in discussions with several of its current component suppliers, and some want to shift part of their production to an industrial park in India, VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau told Reuters on the sidelines of the inauguration of its Indian plant in the southern city of Thoothukudi. Global manufacturers are increasingly looking to diversify their supply chains by shifting production to India, as rising geopolitical tensions, trade restrictions, and cost pressures make China less attractive as the sole manufacturing base. "We also have an inquiry from (a manufacturer in) Vietnam who would love to shift their plastic production to support our car," he added, though he did not provide names of companies considering the shift. VinFast plans to roll out cars to showrooms in India later this month, he said. The pricing and exact launch date have not yet been disclosed. Last year, VinFast and Tamil Nadu state agreed to work toward an investment of up to $2 billion, with an intended commitment of $500 million for the first five years. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles. Chau also said the Indian plant had received orders from Sri Lanka, Nepal and Mauritius, and these initial overseas orders were positioning the India facility to become an export-oriented manufacturing hub, though the firm's immediate focus remained on meeting demand from Indian customers. VinFast has set a global delivery target of 200,000 cars for 2025, having sold about 72,100 units in the first half of the year, primarily in its home market.
