D.C. United name Rene Weiler as head coach

Reuters6 days ago
July 16 - D.C. United named Rene Weiler as their new head coach on Wednesday, six days after firing Troy Lesesne.
Weiler, 51, has been managing clubs in his native Switzerland as well as Germany, Belgium, Egypt and Japan since 2009.
Most recently, he guided Swiss Super League side Servette FC to the Swiss Cup title in 2024. He took over as the club's sporting director in June 2024.
"Rene is a tactician with a proven ability to implement a clear and disciplined playing style, and to adapt that system to bring the best out of his players," D.C. general manager and chief soccer officer Ally Mackay said in a news release. "He builds teams that are organized, aggressive out of possession, and purposeful in attack. That style reflects the identity we're working to establish at D.C. United.
"His experience developing talent and demanding high standards makes him the ideal leader to guide this project. We're excited to welcome him to the club and fully support his vision for what this team can become."
Weiler's teams have won six titles, including the 2016-17 Belgian Pro League with Anderlecht and the 2019-20 Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly.
"This is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase, and I believe strongly in the project taking shape here," Weiler said. "The foundation that has been put in place gives me real confidence in what we can build.
"There is important work ahead, but I'm excited to help lead D.C. United back to where it belongs, competing for championships."
Currently 13th in the Eastern Conference, the Black-and-Red are in danger of missing the MLS Cup Playoffs for a sixth straight season.
Lesesne compiled a record of 18-26-17 across all competitions before being sacked on July 10. Academy director Kevin Flanagan served as interim coach.

Will Levis criticized by ex-Titans star after shoulder surgery rules him out of 2025 NFL season

A former Titans star has been left puzzled by Will Levis' decision to undergo season-ending shoulder injury on the first day of training camp. Levis initially sprained his AC joint in Week 4 vs. the Dolphins last year before returning to the field after the Titans' Week 5 bye. The quarterback later sat from Weeks 7 to 9 but ultimately finished a difficult season under center with 12 starts. He later participated in OTAs and minicamp this offseason. However, Levis has now elected to undergo surgery on his shoulder issue, and former Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan couldn't quite understand the timing of the move. 'I'm sure there's a side to the story that explains why Will waited until late July to get this surgery,' he wrote on X. 'Unfortunately, im too dumb to figure out what that is.' The Titans announced on their website that Levis' surgery was set for Tuesday - which is also the first day of their training camp - and released a statement in support of the young passer. 'After consulting with doctors and his representatives, Will Levis has decided to undergo shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 season. We support his decision to focus on his long-term health,' the team said. 'He approached the offseason with professionalism and showed clear growth as a leader. We remain confident in his full recovery.' Citing an anonymous source, ESPN reported that Levis experienced discomfort during minicamp before starting to look into his medical options. He had reportedly hoped before that the injury would heal itself with rest and rehab. Levis also spoke in May about 'relearning his stroke' with personal quarterback coach Jordan Palmer, whom he worked with in California. While Ward - the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft - was always expected to be the team's starter - Levis' surgery leaves the team thin behind him. Tim Boyle and Brandon Allen have limited experience starting, though Allen produced a respectable 199-yard, one touchdown, one interception start for the 49ers last year. Allen has 10 career stats, while Boyle has just five. At what was likely less than full health, Levis struggled last season in his sophomore campaign. He posted just a 2-10 record under center and turned the ball over 18 times (six fumbles, 12 interceptions) while throwing 13 touchdowns.

Rich Hill returns to majors with Royals against his first team, the Cubs

July 22 - It was just over 20 years ago, on June 15, 2005, that Rich Hill made his major-league debut with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Now, at age 45, the veteran left-hander has come full circle. He will return to the majors on that very same mound, but this time he'll do so as a member of the Kansas City Royals in the second game of a three-game set on Tuesday. The Royals signed Hill to a minor league contract in May. He went 4-4 with a 5.22 ERA, including 61 strikeouts over 50 innings, in 11 minor league starts, nine of those coming with Triple-A Omaha. He allowed two runs or fewer in six of his outings but didn't pitch more than six innings in any game. "He throws a ton of strikes," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. "He's very athletic and keeps himself in great shape. He can move around the mound well. He can change arm angles. So, everything that he's always done, he's still capable of doing it." Hill, with his appearance, will mark 21 seasons with at least one game in the majors. Kansas City will be the 14th team Hill has played for, tying Edwin Jackson's major-league record. At 45 years and 133 days old, Hill will become the oldest player in Royals history, a distinction previously held by Gaylord Perry. A Baseball Hall of Fame member, Perry was 45 years and six days old when he made his final career appearance on Sept. 21, 1983, with the Royals, his eighth team. As for Hill, he most recently appeared in the majors on Sept. 4, 2024, with the Boston Red Sox. He's faced the Cubs just six times (five starts) in his career, going 1-2 with a 2.90 ERA in those contests. The Royals will look to build off their offensive outburst as they try to claim the series after winning the opener on Monday, 12-4. Salvador Perez's hot streak coming out of the All-Star break continued with a pair of home runs, his third straight game with a homer, and extended his hitting streak to four games. He's gone 7-for-15 in that stretch for a .467 average. The Cubs, meanwhile, will be looking to rebound from the loss, which dropped them to second in the National League Central, a game behind the Milwaukee Brewers. The hot Brewers have won 11 consecutive games. The Cubs are 5-5 in their past 10. Chicago spent 108 days in the division lead, and had its biggest margin -- 6 1/2 games -- on June 17. Matthew Boyd (10-3, 2.34 ERA) will get the start for Chicago. The 34-year-old lefty, who is 8-11 with a 5.22 ERA in 29 career appearances (28 starts) against the Royals, is enjoying one of the best seasons of his major-league career and earned his first All-Star nod. His ERA is fifth-best among qualified starters, with only Paul Skenes (1.91), Tarik Skubal (2.19), Garrett Crochet (2.19) and Jacob deGrom (2.32) ahead of him. His accomplishments come after two major surgeries over the past four years -- for a torn left flexor tendon in 2021 and Tommy John surgery in 2023. "In rehab, the big thing for me was, who am I?," he told earlier this month. "Let's go be the most comfortable version of me and see where the metrics play out. Little tweaks. I'm not going to chase something at the risk of it ruining something else." Chicago played without one of its All-Stars on Monday as center-fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong sat out with a bruised right knee sustained on a slide on Sunday in a 6-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox. It's unknown if he'll be available Tuesday. --Field Level Media

Bryan Mbeumo excited to follow in Ronaldo's footsteps at ‘biggest club' Man Utd

After seven weeks and some tense talks between the clubs, the 25-year-old finally completed his move from Brentford on Monday for £65million plus a potential £6million in add-ons. Mbeumo has signed a deal until 2030, with the option of a further season, at what he calls the 'club of my dreams' – one whose shirt he wore as a kid growing up in France. A post shared by Manchester United (@manchesterunited) 'For me, it's the biggest club in the world, in England as well. I think the fans are crazy, the stadium is amazing, and I think every player wants to play here. 'I think my first top was a Manchester United top with Ronaldo behind. It's just such a big club and, yeah, I'm really happy to be here.' Mbeumo says he idolised Ronaldo and Lionel Messi growing up, as well as admiring Neymar and Eden Hazard, and joins Matheus Cunha in bolstering what has been a blunt United attack. The forward says the Brazil international will 'bring something new' to a team that he is excited to get to know better when they head to the United States for their pre-season tour on Tuesday. 'I think it's really important for me joining a new club,' Mbeumo said. 'It's important to create links as soon as possible, automatism as well with the team-mates, so in and out the pitch. 'The spirit is really important. Yeah, create a group, being involved as soon as possible, for me, it's something really important.' Turning up for his first day in style 😎 🆕 @BMbeumo19 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 22, 2025 Mbeumo links up with United after scoring 20 Premier League goals for Brentford under Thomas Frank, who has since moved on to Tottenham and is someone he sees similarly to new boss Ruben Amorim. 'I think they have similar values,' he said. 'He seems really close to his players and his mentality, his winning thinking every time. This is a thing that I need. 'It seems to be a really good group. I think the spirit is really important for winning and, yeah, with the gaffer I heard only good things about the team.'
