Chinese rising star reaches WTT Smash final, eyes first title

There will be a new women's champion at the World Table Tennis (WTT) United States Smash after China's Chen Yi and Zhu Yuling of Macau reached the final on Saturday.
Chen, 19, beat compatriot Kuai Man 4-3 in her first semi-final, winning 6-11, 11-3, 3-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-1, 11-9 in 53 minutes. Chen levelled the match on three occasions and came from behind in the tense decider.
It was the rising star's second win in as many matches against world No 5 Kuai.
'I had played against Kuai so many times before and we were on a similar level,' Chen said. 'I guess I had a bit more luck today, and I am thrilled right now.
'[My final opponent] Zhu is more experienced. I lost 3-0 to her in Taiyuan, so obviously I am the underdog here and I will do the best I can to challenge her.'

Chen's run – which included a stunning 3-1 win over Sun Yingsha and a victory from 3-0 down to eliminate Japan's Hina Hayata – in Las Vegas sparked an off-field saga back home.

East Asian Football Championship: poor Hong Kong sunk by China

Hong Kong finished their East Asian Football Championship on a low note in Seoul on Tuesday, losing 1-0 to China with an uncharacteristically subdued performance. If earlier tournament defeats by Japan and hosts South Korea had been anticipated, there was genuine optimism that Hong Kong could claim their first competitive victory over the Chinese in 40 years. Those hopes were sunk by Huang Zhengyu, whose 20th-minute strike spared China the ignominy of finishing bottom of the four-team competition. That fate instead belonged to Hong Kong, just as it had on their previous four appearances. Hong Kong would not be blamed if they wanted nothing more to do with these finals, whose ongoing viability will, surely, come into after the five matchdays over nine days attracted a series of desultory attendances. Of the 1,423 watching here, roughly 80 per cent were from Hong Kong, and what an atmosphere they created. Even Huang's breakthrough goal, the midfielder's first in seven China appearances, did nothing to quieten their noise. Following a spell of concerted pressure, Huang latched onto a return pass from striker Zhang before sliding a weak effort past goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai, who dived the wrong way. Hong Kong cyclists get National Games warning, as provinces ask ‘famous faces' for help

Herve Dagorne has issued a sobering warning to Hong Kong's cyclists after a tough showing at the China Track Championships. Entering Tuesday's climax of the six-day competition in Shanghai, which serves as a a key warm-up for November's National Games, the city team's senior riders remained empty-handed. On Monday, leading light Ceci Lee Sze-wing opened up a 12-point omnium lead after three disciplines, only to slump to seventh following a closing points race where Dagorne said 'she did not execute the strategy we agreed'. These championships, like their China road equivalents last month, gave head coach Dagorne a rare opportunity to study their rivals at close quarters. 'Strategically, they're making good choices, which makes our lives more difficult; they're very strong,' Dagorne said.
