Setback for Yettinahole project as forest panel rejects extra land approval
The Yettinahole project aims to supply drinking water to the drought-prone districts of Karnataka's arid regions by diverting 24 TMC of water from the Western Ghats. The Karnataka government had in March submitted a fresh proposal requesting clearance to use an extra 423 acres of forest in Hassan and Tumakuru districts for constructing gravity canals.
A team headed by DIGF Pranita Paul from the Ministry had already visited the site and flagged several violations. Their field inspection report made it clear that the additional diversion could only be permitted if the state rectified lapses and gave satisfactory explanations.
However, when the Forest Advisory Committee met in Delhi on June 26 to discuss the proposal, the inspection team's report revealed that portions of forest land had already been used for project work without obtaining central clearance.
The FAC noted this serious breach of norms and ordered that disciplinary action be initiated against government officials who allowed unauthorized use of forest land, and that penalties be imposed. As a result, the proposal was deferred to a future meeting, stalling the state's request for more land for now.
This is not the first time the controversial project has come under scrutiny. Back in 2016, the Karnataka government had secured approval for 13.93 hectares of forest diversion, with 33 stringent conditions. However, an NGT-appointed monitoring team later found that most of these conditions were ignored. Their 2019 report highlighted massive soil erosion and landslides caused by construction, with no remedial measures undertaken. Moreover, the project is alleged to have illegally used additional forest land beyond the approved limits, damaging homes and livelihoods in affected villages, without providing any compensation to families.
The project — which remains politically sensitive — has long faced criticism from environmentalists and affected communities for its potential to damage the fragile Western Ghats ecosystem and displace local populations, all for questionable drinking water returns downstream.
With the FAC's refusal to clear further forest diversion and its insistence on disciplinary action against violating officials, the Karnataka government now finds itself in a tight spot.
Officials must now address compliance failures, provide clear justifications, and satisfy the Centre that the remaining conditions will be met — or risk losing forest clearance altogether.

Ferozepur: The Punjab govt will identify encroachments in Satluj River through drones. With Rs 5.82 crore kept in the budget, the government will get this work done from an agency through outsourcing, Hardeep Singh Mehndiratta, chief engineer of the water resources dept of the Punjab Government informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) during a hearing in this matter. When the NGT asked for records in this regard, the Punjab authorities could not produce any records. On this, the NGT said no such details are on record, even the date of the MoU signed with the Survey of India or the revised MoU has not been mentioned. The NGT said the last affidavit in this matter was also filed on Jan 23, 2025. Therefore, a new affidavit should be filed within two weeks, in which the steps taken for the demarcation of the flood-affected plains in the above area and the progress made in this regard should be disclosed. The next hearing on this matter will be on Oct 7. Social worker Shanti Thamman, who filed a case in the NGT in this regard, said the Punjab chief secretary has not yet filed a fresh affidavit in this matter, while the NGT has asked to file the affidavit within two weeks. On August 1, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on the social media that he had ordered two 'nuclear submarines' to be positioned in 'the appropriate regions', in a direct threat to Russia. Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defence, reposted Mr. Trump's post. The reason for Mr. Trump's escalatory move: back-to-back social media posts by Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian President and Prime Minister. Mr. Trump also slammed the 'foolish, inflammatory and provocative' statements by Mr. Medvedev. Mr. Medvedev had evoked the fabled Dead Hand mechanism (also known as 'Perimeter'), a secretive semi-automated Russian command system that could launch a nuclear strike if its leaders were killed in enemy attacks. Born on September 14, 1965 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Dmitry Medvedev is the son of professors Yulia and Anatoly Medvedev. He earned a degree in law and then completed post-graduate studies at Leningrad State University, graduating in 1990. In 1989, he married Svetlana; their son Ilya, now 29, joined the United Russia Party of Vladimir Putin in 2022. A PhD in law, Mr. Medvedev taught for nine years at the St. Petersburg State University. During this time, he also worked as an adviser to the city council, and in 1991, he joined the legal team working for the then Mayor of St. Petersburg, Anatoly Sobchak. It was here that he met Mr. Putin. Mr. Putin became the acting President of Russia in December 1999, and Mr. Medvedev was tapped to become a member of his team. In 2000, he led Mr. Putin's presidential campaign, and was appointed the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Presidential Executive Office. In November 2005, he became the first Deputy Prime Minister, and was named by Mr. Putin as his successor in 2007. On May 7, 2008, Mr. Medvedev became the President of Russia, for a one-term stint since Mr. Putin was barred under the then Constitution from occupying the post for a third consecutive term. Soon after his inauguration, he nominated Mr. Putin as his Prime Minister. Mr. Medvedev had campaigned with the slogan 'Freedom is better than no freedom,' and during his stint as President, he undertook several reforms, such as the decriminalisation of defamation. He negotiated with the then U.S. President, Barack Obama, to reduce the number of nuclear warheads in the two nations, and presided over Russia's accession to the WTO. He also announced an end to counterinsurgency operations in Chechnya. He was at the helm when war broke out in Georgia in 2008. New role Mr. Putin returned as President in March 2012, and Mr. Medvedev became the head of the United Russia party and the Prime Minister of Russia, occupying this position from May 8, 2012 to 2020. He slowly faded into the background and eventually resigned as Prime Minister in 2020. Post this, Mr. Medvedev was appointed as the deputy of the newly created National Security Council, an advisory body with Mr. Putin at its head. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Mr. Medvedev has been a strong supporter of Mr. Putin's actions. He started a Telegram channel soon after the invasion, becoming Russia's most popular blogger by the end of 2022. This also turned around his image in the eyes of the public: from a public trust rating of 23% in 2021 from pollster VTsIOM, he notched a rating of 45.7% in June 2025. While Mr. Trump and Mr. Medvedev have sparred before, the current exchange was sparked by Mr. Trump's post on July 29, warning that the U.S. would sanction Russia in 10 days if it did not take measures to end the war with Ukraine. Mr. Medvedev called this a 'theatrical ultimatum', and said 'each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war'. He also warned that Russia was not 'Israel or even Iran', and warned Mr. Trump to not 'go down the Sleepy Joe road.' In response, Mr. Trump called him 'the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President'. Mr. Medvedev responded via a message on Telegram, 'If some words from the former president of Russia trigger such a nervous reaction from the high-and-mighty president of the U.S., then Russia is doing everything right and will continue to proceed along its own path.'

Meghalaya govt orders probe into misappropriation of 4,000 MT coal
Shillong, Aug 2 (PTI) The Meghalaya government has ordered an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over 4,000 metric tonnes (MT) of coal in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday. Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that instructions have been issued to the district authorities and the police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. 'We have asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to investigate if there has been any misappropriation or illegal diversion of coal," the deputy chief minister told PTI. The directive comes close on the heels of a revelation by a High Court-appointed committee that over 4,000 metric tonnes of coal, already declared as extracted and inventoried, have vanished from two designated storage sites. The committee, in its latest report to the Meghalaya High Court, said the disappearance raises serious questions about the state's mechanism for monitoring coal stock and preventing illegal transportation. Tynsong said the government will take action if any wrongdoing is established. 'If there is anything wrong, we will proceed according to the law. Even if it requires us to approach the Supreme Court, we will do so," he added. The state's probe will focus on tracing both diesel and coal inventories, including movement, documentation, and field verification.
