Carson Young shoots 64 in rain to take lead in home-state Myrtle Beach Classic
Young, the 30-year-old former Clemson player from Anderson, South Carolina, had a 13-under 200 total at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
'It's been cool to have family out here and a bunch of support with friends,' Young said. 'I hear a bunch of `Go Tigers!' out there. … It's cool to be here in my home state playing golf. It kind of just feels like old times.'
Harry Higgs was a stroke back after a 68.
'Thrilled to shoot under par.' Higgs said. 'I'm not great in the rain.'
The winner of the PGA Tour event — held opposite a signature event at the Truist Championship this week — gets a spot in the PGA Championship if not already eligible.
Winless on the PGA Tour, Young also birdied the par-5 13th and par-4 16th — playing a four-hole stretch in 4 under.
'Honestly, it was a lot of fun out there, even with the rain, just because I was making putts and making some chip shots,' Young said. 'Just played really solid golf. Nothing too flashy out there. But it was just really good golf.'
Mackenzie Hughes had a 70 to drop two shots behind. The Canadian shot a 63 to take the first-round lead and had a 69 on Friday to maintain a share of the top spot.
Victor Perez had a 66 to join Ryan Fox (68), Davis Shore (70), Norman Xiong (69) and Danny Walker (70) at 10 under.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Track turned into a contact sport Sunday when Kenny Bednarek shoved Noah Lyles after Lyles beat him to the finish line in the 200-meter final at U.S. championships. Lyles reeled in Bednarek in the homestretch to win in 19.63 seconds. As he was crossing the finish line, Lyles turned to Bednarek in the lane next to him and started jawing at him. A few steps after they crossed, Bednarek reached out and gave Lyles a two-handed shove. Lyles turned around, backpedaled and reached his arms out, then kept jawing at Bednarek. Their argument continued into the start of the NBC interview. 'I tell ya, if you've got a problem, I expect a call,' Bednarek said. Lyles replied: 'You know what, you're right. You're right. Let's talk after this.' Asked by the network's Lewis Johnson what happened, Bednarek said: 'I'm not going to say it out here, but we got something to do and talk about.' The next chapter figures to play out Sept. 19 in Japan, where they'll be among the favorites in the 200-meter final. Lyles is trying to match Usain Bolt with four straight world titles in his best race. Lyles had a slow start to a season that has seen Bednarek open as the dominant sprinter of 2025. Bednarek won the 100 meters Friday and also beat Lyles at the Olympics last year, finishing second in a race in which Lyles won bronze while suffering with COVID. 'It was a pretty difficult championship,' Lyles said. 'I've been tired. Rangers right-hander Jacob DeGrom is fastest to 1,800 career strikeouts in MLB history
SEATTLE (AP) — Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom became the fasted pitcher in major league history to reach 1,800 career strikeouts by games and innings on Sunday. In the second inning against Seattle, deGrom got Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford to swing through a 98.7 mph four-seam fastball for his fourth K of the game. With the strikeout, deGrom became the fasted to 1,800 career strikeouts in games (240) and innings pitched (1,493 1/3). The 37-year-old right-hander beat the marks of two left-handers. Hall-of-Famer Randy Johnson needed 243 games to record 1,800 strikeouts. It took the Atlanta Braves' Chris Sale 1,498 innings. DeGrom, a five-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young Award winner, signed a five-year, $185 million deal with the Rangers before the 2023 season. He was limited to nine starts over his first two seasons due to injury. In 2025, deGrom has returned to his All-Star form, and entered Sunday's start with a 10-3 record and 2.55 ERA.
