Tim Tszyu has vowed to knockout Sebastian Fundora in their rematch and make his family the greatest in boxing history

News.com.au19-07-2025
Tim Tszyu has vowed to deliver a 'devastating' knockout of Sebastian Fundora and finally conquer America as he outlined his mission to make the Tszyu clan the greatest family in boxing history.
The 'Soul Taker' concedes his career is on the line when Tszyu (25-2, 18KO) looks to avenge his blood-stained loss last year to Fundora (21-1-1, 14KO) in Sunday's super welterweight world-title rematch in Las Vegas.
It has been 476 days since Tszyu lost his WBO world title to Fundora after a heartbreaking split-decision defeat at T-Mobile Arena marred by a shocking head gash that saw him bravely fight through a fountain of blood for 10 rounds.
Now Tszyu is back in Sin City to atone for his pugilistic sins, this time at MGM's Grand Garden Arena, the very venue where his famous father Kostya destroyed Zab Judah in 2001 to become the undisputed champion of the world at super lightweight.
'The Thunder from Down Under' produced the greatest knockout of his career to ice Judah in two rounds — and Tszyu will tap into his family's menacing history at MGM to maul Fundora.
In their first fight, Tszyu was dominating Fundora for the opening two rounds before a savage gash derailed the Australian, but this time, the Sydneysider says, cut-free, the 'Towering Inferno' will go up in flames.
'I will win by knockout,' Tszyu declared ahead of the biggest fight of his career.
'I feel like this is the one.
'I won't just win, but it will be in devastating fashion.
'I just remember feeling Fundora, seeing him, understanding him. I remember what he brings, certain shots. I remember him and I want to feel him in there and be in control the whole time.
'I remember feeling his power and thinking, 'Is that it?'
'A true champion rises to the occasion, gets back up, and I'm ready to get back up.
'I have to control the fight round by round, stay patient, and when the punch does come - and it will come - he will be asleep.'
For all the traditional pre-fight hype, hoopla and mind games, the reality is the jury remains out on Tszyu as a global force.
The two-time world-champion hopeful has a goal to conquer America _ but he hasn't yet.
In his last two visits on US soil, he was beaten by Fundora, who holds the WBC world title, before suffering a brutal third-round beatdown in Orlando last October against Bakhram Murtazaliev, the ruthless Russian who sent Tszyu crashing to the canvas four times in eight minutes of mayhem.
Now, steeled by his emphatic disposal of American Joey Spencer in April, Tszyu is beginning to pick up the pieces. He won't be satisfied until he puts together the most formidable family jigsaw in world boxing.
With Kostya a four-time world champion, Tim eyeing a second world title and younger brother Nikita (10-0) now a world-ranked fighter, the 30-year-old pledged to make the Tszyus boxing's royal family.
'One of my big ambitions is to overtake my dad,' he said.
'My biggest driver is my dad. His aura. I've had to create my own identity and to do that, I have to surpass him.
'Not to disrespect him, but my No.1 goal is to make sure the Tszyu family is the greatest boxing family that has ever lived.
'My goal remains the same: pursue greatness and conquer America, it's simple.
'Vegas is the Mecca ... you make it here, you have made it in the world of boxing.'
Fundora, currently the tallest world champion in boxing at 197cm, a staggering 22cm taller than Tszyu, lobbed the first verbal grenade at his rival last week by claiming his blood-affected eyesight was perfectly fine.
Tszyu hit back by claiming Fundora hits 'like a cheese stick', but the skyscraper slugger has upped the ante. The American says he is hungrier than Tszyu, and believes he will win more emphatically in the rematch.
'I do think I'll win more easily,' he said.
'I tell my dad the ones I hate are the good ones, and I hate this one. I want it more.
'I want the best version of Tim Tszyu. He is world class, a world champion ... it's just the Towering Inferno is that much better.
'This time I will execute a lot faster.
'I hope everything that he went through in our first fight makes him that much better, so there's no excuses.
'I am going in there all guns blazing. I'm going in there to hurt him.'
A third loss in 12 months would be catastrophic for Tszyu. It would all-but destroy his plan to be the top dog in the 154-pound division.
There is a view a second Fundora loss would be a fatal blow to his American dream.
Asked if his career is on the line on Sunday when he walks into the MGM Grand arena his father graced two decades ago, Tszyu said: 'Yep, this is how I am approaching it.
'This is it. I am all in.
'Live by the shield, die by the shield, that's how I see it.
'I need to win and I will win, trust me.'

Liam Paro fight: Paro to move up to welterweight, turning down super-lightweight world title eliminator

Liam Paro will give up his IBF super-lightweight world title eliminator fight with Mexico's Lindolfo Delgado and move up to welterweight. After making the 140-pound (63.5kg) limit for 10 straight years, Code Sports understands the Queenslander is now struggling to make the weight class and will move up a division. Paro is ranked fifth at super-lightweight with The Ring, and is in the top five with the WBO, IBF and WBC. The move to 147 pounds (66.7kg) means he won't join Kostya Tszyu in becoming a two-time super-lightweight world champion, but opens up the possibility of big-money bouts against the likes of Rolando 'Rolly' Romero, Brian Norman Jr and Ryan Garcia. Liam Paro destroyed Johnathan Navarro. Picture: No Limit Boxing The other big names in the mix are WBC welterweight world champion Mario Barrios, who held onto his title with a draw against the great Manny Pacquiao in the headline fight of Tim Tszyu's loss to Sebastian Fundora in Las Vegas. Paro has even spoken about one day facing modern day great Pacquiao at some stage, telling Fox Sports, 'I'd love that fight. 'Manny, he's one of my favourite fighters. And to have his name on my resume would be something special.' The move up to one of boxing's glamour divisions is in line with turning 'The Prodigy' into Australia's next PPV boxing star, alongside Tim and Nikita Tszyu. A Cowboys diehard, there have even been preliminary talks of having Paro fight in Las Vegas on the same weekend that North Queensland play Newcastle in the 2026 season opener in Sin City. Mario Barrios (L) and Manny Pacquiao (R) fought to a draw in their WBC welterweight world title fight in Las Vegas. Picture:Paro most recently scored a thunderous fifth round stoppage win over Johnathan Navarro in his Australian homecoming in Cairns in June. That bout was his first on home soil since his first round knockout of Brock Jarvis in Brisbane in 2022. Since then, the 29-year-old knocked out the highly touted Montana Love before scoring one of the biggest boilovers of 2024 with a unanimous decision world title win over Subriel Matias. He relinquished the IBF world title in a split decision defeat to slick American Richardson Hitchens in December before his Far North Queensland homecoming in June. Paro had been linked to super-lightweight bouts with Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz, Romero and Delgado, but his team is understood to see more of a future at welterweight. Paro has been loosely pencilled in to fight again in September. Brendan Bradford Content producer Brendan Bradford is a sports writer for CODE Sports. Jordan Petaia set for NFL LA Chargers vs Detroit Lions Hall of Fame match

Petaia's remarkable transition to the NFL is now poised to play out live to Australian audiences on Kayo and ESPN, with the LA Chargers' match against the Lions to be shown on Friday from 10am. Code Sports understands Petaia will be given snaps during the game in the tight-end position he has trained in since joining the Chargers in April. The match in Ohio will be the Hall of Fame game, which marks the start of the pre-season and is the first televised NFL game since the Super Bowl in February, when the Philadelphia Eagles thumped Kansas City Chiefs to win the championship. If Petaia takes the field, he will create history as the first former Wallaby to do so. The 25-year-old has impressed Chargers officials with his speed and strength, although he has much to learn about the finer arts of tight-end play, given it is one of the toughest positions on the field. Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce and Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski are among the most famous tight ends of recent times, excelling at getting into clear space amid heavy traffic, making powerful runs, and also blocking for other teammates in offence. Petaia, who played 31 Tests for Australia and in two World Cups, decided to follow his childhood dream of playing in the NFL last year. He signed up for their International Pathway Program, and after strong performances in training camps on the Gold Coast and then Florida, he was picked up by the Chargers. While Petaia is set to feature, star quarterback Justin Herbert will not. Coach Jim Harbaugh revealed the $400 million man will be rested with former first round draft pick Trey Lance to start. The Chargers and Lions were both eliminated in the playoffs last season and will be looking to make an early statement, before the NFL season gets underway in September. Petaia follows in the footsteps of other cross-code Australian athletes that have made the switch to the NFL, most notably NRL stars Jarryd Hayne and Valentine Holmes, and AFL players Sav Rocca and Chris Bryan. After signing with the Chargers three months ago, Petaia told Code Sports he was 'just worried about doing my best every day and training hard.' 'You do what you can to put your best foot forward, whatever happens, happens. 'My mindset is to leave no stone unturned, and train harder.' Rugby Union If all Australia cared about was rugby, the Wallabies would be unstoppable. Simon McLoughlin reveals why shouty Lions fans should thank their stars they're not living in an alternate universe. World Donald Trump is threatening to sink a $5.67bn stadium deal unless Washington's NFL team drops its 'ridiculous' Commanders moniker.

NRL commissions more planes than ever before as Vegas interest explodes

In a bid to capitalise on a surge of interest, the NRL has just commissioned a fifth Qantas Dreamliner 787 aeroplane to ferry fans directly to Las Vegas next year. And given the extraordinary interest, there is every chance a sixth plane will be ordered. It is an unprecedented move given just two chartered planes flew to Nevada this year. 'Demand has been so high, it's been unbelievable. The interest in Vegas is growing and growing,' said NRL general manager of US expansion, John Vellis. The first four planes have essentially sold out with a fifth now required and possibly a sixth if interest levels remain at fever-pitch. The 2026 Las Vegas extravaganza will be played on February 28 in America (March 1 in Australia) with games comprising St George Illawarra, Newcastle, Canterbury, North Queensland, Leeds and Hull Kingston Rovers. Four flights will depart from Sydney and another from Brisbane to cater for Cowboys supporters. There are 236 seats on each plane. Economy seats on all four original flights are sold out, with a few remaining in business and premium business. A fifth flight is expected to be sold out, meaning NRL chartered flights alone will carry nearly 1200 fans to Las Vegas. That figure will increase if a sixth plane is required. There will be connecting flights for fans from Townsville to Brisbane and Newcastle to Sydney. Just two NRL flights left Australia in the initial year – one each from Sydney and Brisbane, where Broncos fans boarded. Last year was also two flights, both departing Sydney given Queensland didn't have a side competing. From two to five flights, possibly six, shows the interest in Vegas continues to grow year-in-year. 'The charter flights are going fantastic so we are about to launch another one this week,' said Vellis. 'For the first two years we had two charters. This year we have gone up to four and we are now going to launch a fifth charter. These flights are specifically for our event. 'We have doubled the charters for next year and we are going again (for a fifth plane). 'If tickets go berserk again then we might have to launch another flight. We're not adverse to that at all.' All flights will be themed around each participating NRL club with club legends on board along with classic matches on the in-flight monitors. The flights will leave on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before the games and fly directly to Las Vegas.
