Vanessa Kirby reinvents Sue Storm, talks about motherhood, baby co-stars and Robert Downey Jr.
Kirby, known for her emotionally grounded performances, revealed that what drew her to Sue Storm was the strength and complexity the character embodies.
"Yes, definitely," she said when asked if Sue's leadership qualities played a role in her decision. 'It's a testament to Matt Shakman's vision for her, and wanting to be faithful to the comics. It was such a pleasure to go back and read Sue from 1961.'
She added,"It always felt like, 'How can we be as true to what these incredible artists have imagined over the years?' She always felt like a total mixture of so many things: obviously, deeply maternal and deeply loving and incredibly steady, but also fierce."
The actress dove deep into Sue's comic book roots, particularly the early depictions from 1961. For Kirby, portraying a character often misunderstood as passive was a chance to explore the fierceness of maternal strength. 'To give birth, you have to be completely, totally fierce,' she noted. 'That's what motherhood is.'
Filming with babies, especially during emotionally intense scenes, presented its own set of challenges. Kirby revealed that the role of Franklin was played by real infants throughout the film, with one standout baby named Ada becoming a beloved presence on set.
She said, '100% of the film was shot with a real baby. Our lead baby, Ada, a little girl, was just heaven. We had lots of other babies who were acting with us and helping us. We got really attached to them, and they were so part of our journey. It almost became weird if they weren't there.'
'Also, it's challenging. The speech that Sue has was a night shoot. It was really late and we were shooting in winter in London, and all the babies cried at exactly the same line. I thought, 'Am I delivering something so bad that they're crying at the same moment?' Babies are the most natural actors in the world,' she added.
Kirby also spoke warmly of her experience working with Robert Downey Jr., who is set to portray Dr Doom in future instalments. 'Robert's never not been on set. He's always there. He is our leader. We call him our Godfather. He's looked after us. It's such a joy working with the Russos and him, because they've had such deep collaboration for so long.,' she shared, emphasising his support and leadership.
With 'Fantastic Four', Kirby not only redefines a beloved superheroine but also brings emotional depth and quiet strength to a new generation's Sue Storm.

Avengers Doomsday plot leaks: Fan theory says it will be Pedro Pascal vs Robert Downey Jr, reveals real reason why Dr Doom was seen with Franklin
It's always entertaining to see fans of superhero films speculate about what all is going to happen in the upcoming films. One goes through multiple Reddit threads, posts on X (formerly Twitter), and hundreds of videos on YouTube and ends up being even more confused about the plot than before. Well, a new set of Avengers: Doomsday leaks are making the rounds of the internet, and if they are true, fans will be able to see the return of many beloved superheroes in prime roles before Marvel moves on to Secret Wars. This article contains spoilers for The Fantastic Four First Steps so if you have not watched the film, come back to us later. It all started when someone supposedly working for Marvel Studios leaked a document containing plot points for Doomsday. Apparently T'Challa's sister, Shuri, is going to be a big part of the movie, as she is the one who will discover the incursions (worlds colliding) and the timelines merging. The Fantastic Four will be travelling to Earth 616, as shown in the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*, to recruit help for their upcoming fight against Dr. Doom. Wong, Thor, the Thunderbolts, Banner, and Captain Marvel will all be informed about Franklin's kidnapping and the fact that a specific universe is heading for them at a dangerous speed. ALSO READ: Comic-Con salutes James Gunn and gets first looks at Coyote vs. Acme, and new Star Trek forays Upon investigating more about the universe, Shuri will detect the energy signature of Captain Monica Rambeau, something which makes Captain Marvel even more excited for the mission, as she wishes to rescue her mentee. While all this information should be taken with a grain of salt, the angle of Reed and Sue's son Franklin is definitely worth exploring. The post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps shows Franklin in the arms of Doom as the masked god reveals his face to the child. The omega-level mutant revived his mother, and many believe that Doom removed his mask so that Franklin could heal the injuries on his face. Franklin has the ability to become the strongest of all, and just like Galactus, Doom realises this as well. It's safe to assume that Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom will be once again go head-to-head. Reed will have the rest of the Fantastic Four with him, while Doom will command his army of Latveria (a fictional country ruled by him). We know Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, is in the film, which means that he will be leading the charge for the new Avengers. While Captain Marvel's return can prove to be exciting, The Marvels was a huge letdown at the box office, and if she returns, this might prove to be her last appearance. Among all this speculation, a new doubt among fans seems to be on the rise. What if casting Robert Downey Jr as Dr. Doom is just a ruse, in order to hide the identity of the true Von Doom.

Christopher Nolan Faces Backlash Over Filming The Odyssey In Disputed Western Sahara
Christopher Nolan faces criticism for filming The Odyssey in Western Sahara, a disputed territory. Activists and human rights groups urge solidarity with the Sahrawi people. Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan is facing mounting criticism over his decision to shoot parts of his upcoming film The Odyssey in Western Sahara, a territory considered 'non-self-governing" by the United Nations and largely controlled by Morocco. While anticipation around Nolan's adaptation of Homer's Greek epic remains high, his choice of location has drawn sharp condemnation from activists, film bodies, and human rights groups. According to Variety, key portions of the film were shot in the city of Dakhla, situated in the Moroccan-administered Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region. However, Dakhla is also located within the borders of Western Sahara — a region with a long-standing and unresolved colonial legacy, and home to the Indigenous Sahrawi people who have been seeking independence for decades. The Western Sahara International Film Festival (FiSahara), which operates out of Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria, publicly urged Nolan and his team to cease filming in the region. 'Dakhla is not just a beautiful place with cinematic sand dunes. First and foremost, it is an occupied and militarised city whose Indigenous Sahrawi population is subjected to brutal repression by the Moroccan occupation forces," the festival said in a statement. Calling the production's presence 'a form of complicity," the festival further stated, 'stop filming in Dakhla and stand in solidarity with the Sahrawi people who have been under military occupation for 50 years and who are routinely imprisoned and tortured for their peaceful struggle for self-determination." Sahara director Mara Carrin added, 'By filming part of 'The Odyssey' in an occupied territory classified as a 'journalistic desert' by Reporters Without Borders, Nolan and his team, perhaps unwittingly, are contributing to Morocco's repression of the Sahrawi people and to the Moroccan regime's efforts to normalise its occupation of Western Sahara. We're sure that if they understood the full implications of filming a high-profile movie in a territory whose Indigenous peoples are unable to make their own films about their stories under occupation, Nolan and his team would be horrified." Actor Javier Bardem, a past participant in FiSahara, also voiced his support by sharing the statement on Instagram. He wrote, 'For 50 years, Morocco has occupied Western Sahara, expelling the Sahrawi people from their cities. Dakhla is one of them, converted by the Moroccan occupiers into a tourist destination and now a film set, always with the aim of erasing the Sahrawi identity of the city. Another illegal occupation, another repression against a people, the Sahrawi, unjustly plundered with the approval of Western governments, including the Spanish. Free Sahara Now (sic)." The Ministry of Culture of the Polisario Front — the Sahrawi nationalist movement that seeks independence — also released a strongly worded response, calling Nolan's production 'a dangerous form of cultural normalisation with the occupation" and 'an unethical exploitation of art and cinema to whitewash the image of a colonial situation." However, not everyone views the development negatively. Reda Benjelloun of the Moroccan Cinematographic Center defended the decision, telling Medias24, 'Dakhla will indeed offer extraordinary opportunities in the future to foreign productions which will find geography very different from other regions of Morocco." He noted that Nolan's film marks the first major Hollywood production to film in the area, which he described as 'extremely important." The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and others, has also been shot across Greece, Italy, and other Moroccan regions. The film is scheduled for a global theatrical release on July 17, 2026. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
