117 nabbed in five-day crime sweep in Kuala Muda

ALOR STAR: Police arrested 117 individuals — including 51 who tested positive for drugs — during a five-day special operation targeting criminal activities in the Kuala Muda district.
Kedah Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew said Ops Mega Khas was carried out from April 17 to 21 in collaboration with various local enforcement agencies.
He said the integrated operation aimed to tackle crime holistically by focusing on known hotspots and individuals deemed high-risk.
"This large-scale operation targeted gambling, vice, gangsterism, and individuals involved in drug abuse and trafficking. The objective was to take action against those contributing to the rise in index crime within Kuala Muda," he said in a statement today.
Among those arrested were 22 individuals on the police wanted list.
The operation also resulted in the resolution of 66 property crime cases, including house break-ins and thefts reported in the district.
Yazid said police enforcement efforts would continue to ensure peace and maintain public confidence across the state.

[UPDATED] Man with 41 criminal records among two shot dead in Jitra [WATCH]

JITRA: A man with a past record of over 40 criminal-related offences and his accomplice were shot dead in a shootout with police near the Bandar Darul Aman exit of the North-South Expressway this morning. The 8.05am incident unfolded when a team from the Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Bukit Aman, who were patrolling the area, noticed two suspicious-looking men in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and attempted to stop it for inspection. Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said the suspects refused to comply and instead opened fire, prompting officers to return fire. "Both suspects were killed during the exchange. "A search of the vehicle uncovered two firearms — a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol — along with several live rounds, a machete, and tools believed to be used in criminal activities," he told reporters at the scene. As a result of the incident, the southbound exit at Bandar Darul Aman was closed to traffic for four hours from 8.30am. Fisol said checks showed that one of the suspects, aged 41, had a past record of 41 criminal-related offences. The identity of the second suspect remains unknown, as no identification documents were found on him. He added that the duo are believed to be members of a larger criminal gang involved in violent crimes nationwide. "Their activities include drug trafficking, gangsterism, factory break-ins, and armed robbery. "Investigations suggest this group has been active since 2020. "So far, the forensic unit has recovered three bullet casings at the scene, and investigations are ongoing," he said. The bodies of both suspects have been sent to the Forensic Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Meanwhile, Bukit Aman CID acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus, who was also present at the scene, said both suspects are believed to be part of a criminal syndicate involved in multiple serious crimes. "We are investigating whether they are linked to a group operating in Klang, Selangor. "The syndicate is believed to have over 30 members, and police will take more aggressive action moving forward. "Investigations are ongoing," he said.

Report lodged against portal

Published on: Sunday, July 06, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 06, 2025 By: Johan Aziz Text Size: KENINGAU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Bingkor Division has lodged a police report against Malaysiakini over a report it says is serious, false and unfounded. The report was written by two journalists by the portal on the same date and caused confusion and slander against the party's top leadership, it said. Advertisement Bingkor Division StarSabah Women Head, Jennifer Epil together with Bingkor Division Permanent Chairman, Haji Yazid Haji Mohd Hasnan Tawik @ Charles, Bingkor Division Youth Head, Florian @ Jai Ilon and several Youth and Women Committee Members lodged the report at the District Police headquarters, Saturday. They said the report baselessly claimed that Party President Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan received a bribe of RM1.78 million linked to the mining licence scandal. The allegations also involved two Party Deputy Presidents, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin and Datuk Robert Tawik, who allegedly received bribes of RM530,000 and RM300,000, respectively. Yazid said the allegations were a malicious attempt to tarnish the good name of the party leadership ahead of the increasingly vibrant political season. 'The party will take appropriate legal action against any individual or organization involved in spreading false news,' he said. Yazid said the police report was to ask the authorities to immediately investigate the motive and source of this report to ensure justice is upheld and to maintain the integrity of the democratic process in this country. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
