Can ChatGPT save your relationship? Inside the AI therapy trend winning over Gen Z, but alarming experts

Time of India09-07-2025
Ellie Doyle, a 33-year-old mother of three in Connecticut, never imagined she would use artificial intelligence to strengthen her marriage. But after a long day of juggling twin toddlers and a full household, she found comfort in venting to her favorite virtual companion—ChatGPT. She even gave it a name: Tully.
So when a difficult conversation with her husband loomed, Doyle didn't pick up the phone to call a friend or therapist. She opened her ChatGPT app and asked Tully to help her rephrase her emotions in a way that would foster understanding, not conflict. The result? The conversation went better than expected—and her husband was not only surprised, but impressed.
'We've both been to therapy before, together and separately,' Doyle told USA Today. 'But it's expensive. It's $200 a session without insurance. Sometimes, you just need an unbiased ear.'
In Doyle's case, the virtual ear belonged to a chatbot with a vast vocabulary and no judgment.
A Generation Turning to Screens for Support
Doyle isn't alone. In a world where therapy sessions are expensive and hard to book, Gen Z and Millennials are increasingly turning to ChatGPT and other AI tools for mental health support. Whether it's rewording a text message to sound less defensive or seeking help with anxiety, many find solace in a tool that is always available—and never interrupts.

AI chat tools are rapidly becoming emotional companions for a generation raised on smartphones and overstimulation. The idea of talking to a robot may have once seemed absurd. But now, for some, it's comforting. As therapist Lauren Ruth Martin told USA Today, 'It feels safe somehow to type into the abyss that knows everything about you and nothing.'
However, that abyss may not always be safe.
When Empathy Becomes an Illusion
A recent study reported by The Independent and published on arXiv casts a long shadow over this trend. Researchers conducted a chilling experiment where ChatGPT was presented with a veiled suicidal query. Instead of identifying the red flags, it responded with bridge names and heights in New York City—a glaring oversight with potentially devastating consequences.
The researchers warned that while AI chatbots may simulate empathy, they do not understand it. 'These issues fly in the face of best clinical practice,' the study concluded, pointing to the real danger of chatbots validating harmful thoughts or missing signs of serious mental distress.

Stanford researcher Nick Haber emphasized that while AI can be a helpful mirror, it's not a substitute for qualified therapy. 'There's potentially a ton of utility and coaching possible with AI. But when conversations move quickly into 'capital T' therapy, we must tread carefully.'

A Useful Tool; Not a Replacement
Mental health advocates caution against treating AI like a therapist. Amanda Phillips, a wellness expert, recommends using AI for structured help: morning routines, productivity prompts, or guided breathing—but not trauma processing. 'It's not a therapist, so it shouldn't be used as one,' she says.
Even Doyle acknowledges this limitation. 'I like taking pieces of it to help me form how I want to have a conversation,' she explains. 'It can be a guide, but not completely take over.'
Wellness coach Britta Stevenson echoes that sentiment. She teaches clients how to use ChatGPT for reflection—but also reminds them not to lose real-life connections in the process. 'One of my friends was using it every day, and I said, 'Wait, talk to me!''
The Danger of Convenience
What makes ChatGPT so appealing—its 24/7 availability, non-judgmental tone, and free access—can also be what makes it dangerous. As men especially remain less likely to seek professional help, experts worry they may turn to AI as a substitute rather than a supplement.
'My fear is that we are not supplementing but substituting real intelligence, real connections, real relationships for the most convenient thing,' said Casey Cornelius, who works with young men to promote healthy masculinity.
So, Can AI Save Marriages?
Maybe. For some like Doyle, it's a tool—a digital reflection that helps shape difficult conversations. But for others, especially those navigating trauma, grief, or serious mental illness, relying solely on AI could be risky.
As the world grapples with the mental health crisis, ChatGPT offers a glimpse into a future where support is more accessible, but also more artificial. Whether that future heals or harms will depend on how we choose to use the technology.
Because at the end of the day, while ChatGPT may help rephrase your feelings, it cannot feel them. And sometimes, only another human heart can truly understand your own.

What is Donald Trump hiding? Bruised hand covered in makeup

A fresh wave of concern about Donald Trump's health resurfaced on Tuesday after a camera zoomed in on a familiar bruise on the back of the President's right hand. The footage, captured by C-SPAN as Trump spoke to reporters before heading to Pittsburgh, showed a patch of makeup caked over the discolored area — makeup that clearly didn't match his skin tone. According to New York Magazine, the patch appeared flaky and heavy, giving rise to renewed speculation about what it might be hiding. This isn't the first time the same spot has drawn attention. Observers first noted a similar bruise during a February meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. At the time, The Independent reported that the area looked yellow, bruised, and covered. Since then, it's been spotted again in April and June. The New Republic also highlighted these repeated sightings, questioning why the bruise keeps reappearing — and why it's often concealed with makeup. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the concerns, repeating an explanation she's used before. 'President Trump is a man of the people and he meets more Americans and shakes their hands on a daily basis than any other President in history,' Leavitt said, The Daily Beast reported. 'His commitment is unwavering and he proves that every single day.' She made a similar statement last month, calling it a common side effect of vigorous campaigning and physical interaction with supporters. Trump himself has previously claimed the bruise is a result of his dedication to meeting voters. 'It's from shaking hands with thousands of people,' he told Time magazine in December 2024. In April, the White House released the president's official health report, which claimed there were no major medical concerns. The report said Trump's 'blood flow to his extremities is unimpaired,' and that there were 'no concerning lesions or growths.' It also noted 'minor sun damage' to his skin but claimed his joints and muscles showed 'no swelling.'

ChatGPT helps write this mayor's speeches, now he wants a thousand city workers using AI

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Before the mayor of San Jose, California, arrives at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new business, his aides ask ChatGPT to help draft some talking points."Elected officials do a tremendous amount of public speaking," said Mayor Matt Mahan , whose recent itinerary has taken him from new restaurant and semiconductor startup openings to a festival of lowriding car politicians might be skittish admitting a chatbot co-wrote their speech or that it helped draft a $5.6 billion budget for the new fiscal year, but Mahan is trying to lead by example, pushing a growing number of the nearly 7,000 government workers running Silicon Valley 's biggest city to embrace artificial intelligence said adopting AI tools will eliminate drudge work and help the city better serve its roughly 1 million hardly the only public or private sector executive directing an AI-or-bust strategy, though in some cases, workers have found that the costly technology can add hassles or mistakes."The idea is to try things, be really transparent, look for problems, flag them, share them across different government agencies, and then work with vendors and internal teams to problem solve," Mahan said in an interview. "It's always bumpy with new technologies."By next year, the city intends to have 1,000, or about 15%, of its workers trained to use AI tools for a variety of tasks, including pothole complaint response, bus routing and using vehicle-tracking surveillance cameras to solve of San Jose's early adopters was Andrea Arjona Amador , who leads electric mobility programs at the city's transportation department. She has already used ChatGPT to secure a $12 million grant for electric vehicle Amador set up a customized "AI agent" to review the correspondence she was receiving about various grant proposals and asked it to help organize the incoming information, including due dates. Then, she had it help draft the 20-page far, San Jose has spent more than $35,000 to purchase 89 ChatGPT licenses -- at $400 per account -- for city workers to use."The way it used to work, before I started using this, we spent a lot of evenings and weekends trying to get grants to the finish line," she said. The Trump administration later rescinded the funding, so she pitched a similar proposal to a regional funder not tied to the federal Amador, who learned Spanish and French before she learned English, also created another customized chatbot to edit the tone and language of her professional close relationships to some of the tech industry's biggest players, including San Francisco-based OpenAI and Mountain View-based Google , the mayors of the Bay Area's biggest cities are helping to promote the type of AI adoption that the tech industry is striving for, while also promising guidelines and standards to avoid the technology's Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced a plan Monday to give nearly 30,000 city workers, including nurses and social workers, access to Microsoft 's Copilot chatbot, which is based on the same technology that powers ChatGPT. San Francisco's plan says it comes with "robust privacy and bias safeguards, and clear guidelines to ensure technology enhances - not replaces - human judgment."San Jose has similar guidelines and hasn't yet reported any major mishaps with its pilot projects. Such problems have attracted attention elsewhere because of the technology's propensity to spew false information, known as digital fingerprints were found on an error-filled document published in May by U.S. Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr.'s "Make America Healthy Again" Fresno, California, a school official was forced to resign after saying she was too trusting of an AI chatbot that fabricated information in a some government agencies have been secretive about when they turn to chatbots for help, Mahan is open about his ChatGPT-written background memos that he turns to when making speeches."Historically, that would have taken hours of phone calls and reading, and you just never would have been able to get those insights," he said. "You can knock out these tasks at a similar or better level of quality in a lot less time."He added, however, that "you still need a human being in the loop. You can't just kind of press a couple of buttons and trust the output. You still have to do some independent verification. You have to have logic and common sense and ask questions."Earlier this year, when OpenAI introduced a new pilot product called Operator, it promised a new kind of tool that went beyond a chatbot's capabilities. Instead of just analyzing documents and producing passages of text, it could also access a computer system and schedule calendars or perform tasks on a person's behalf. Developing and selling such "AI agents" is now a key focus for the tech than an hour's drive east of Silicon Valley, where the Bay Area merges into Central Valley farm country, Jamil Niazi, director of information technology at the city of Stockton, had big visions for what he could do with such an the parks and recreation department could let an AI agent help residents book a public park or swimming pool for a birthday party. Or residents could find out how crowded the pool was before packing their swim months later, however, after completing a proof-of-concept phase, the city didn't buy a full license for the technology due to the market research group Gartner recently predicted that over 40% of "agentic AI" projects will be canceled before the end of 2027, "due to escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls."San Jose's mayor remains bullish about the potential for these AI tools to help workers "in the bowels of bureaucracy" to rapidly speed up their digital paperwork."There's just an amazing amount of bureaucracy that large organizations have to have," Mahan said. "Whether it's finance, accounting, HR or grant writing, those are the kinds of roles where we think our employees can be 20 (to) 50% more productive -- quickly."
