Glacial retreat reaches alarming levels endangering water system: minister
'Pakistan is home to over 7,000 glaciers, the largest concentration outside the polar regions, which are melting at an unprecedented pace. Over the past six decades, the rate of glacial retreat has reached alarming levels. Climate change is no longer a theoretical concern but a harsh and dangerous reality that poses a grave threat to the future of humanity.
The Indus River supports 90 percent of Pakistan's agricultural output, and the accelerated glacial melt threatens not only agriculture but also water security, energy generation, and food availability,' the minister said while addressing at a high-level event in Islamabad on climate change, titled 'Practical Action for Environmental Protection: Progress on Climate Change Direction in Pakistan' organised by Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CARE) for South Asia on Tuesday.
He said that climate change is no longer a theoretical concern but a harsh and dangerous reality that poses a grave threat to the future of humanity.
Recalling the catastrophic floods of 2022, he said that Pakistan has already experienced the devastating effects of climate change, which have inflicted irreparable losses on human lives, the economy, agriculture, and vital infrastructure.
The minister pointed out that countries such as Pakistan, which have contributed least to global greenhouse gas emissions, are among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts. 'The annual provision of $100 billion for climate affected countries is not charity, it is a matter of climate justice,' he asserted.
He urged that the international community, especially the Global North, must now be held accountable.
'The world has long demanded 'do more' from the Global South; the time has come to demand that the Global North 'do more' for climate justice,' he said.
The minister further stated that developed nations must honour their commitments by providing the required financial, technical, and institutional support to climate-vulnerable countries so they can respond effectively to the unfolding crisis.
He noted that the present government has taken the challenge of climate change seriously and has made it a central pillar of Pakistan's national planning framework under the '5Es' (Export growth, Environmental sustainability, Energy security, Equity and Empowerment, and E-Pakistan) strategy.
Concluding his remarks, the minister called upon the international community to play an active and responsible role in ensuring climate justice and securing a sustainable and safer future for all.

Three 'TTP terrorists' killed in Swat IBO
Listen to article Three wanted terrorists and "key operatives" of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed in a joint operation conducted by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and police in Barikot tehsil of Swat district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, on Friday. In a statement, the CTD (Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa) noted that a targeted raid was launched on "verified intelligence" regarding the presence of the terrorists. He was reportedly wanted in nine terrorism-related cases and had been involved in the targeted killing of Village Defence Committee (VDC) members, an attempted assassination of an advocate and extortion from civilians. A bounty of Rs2 million had been placed on him for his capture or elimination. Another terrorist was identified as Matiullah alias Ishaq/Junaid, son of Ibrat Shah and a resident of Dubsar, Martung in Shangla district. He was wanted in two terrorism cases and had been linked to targeted killings of individuals assisting the law enforcement agencies. The third slain terrorist was identified as Rahimullah Rahmani alias Roohullah, son of Amanullah and a resident of Shirey, Nuristan, Afghanistan. "Intelligence reports further confirm that the cell was operating under the direction of foreign-based, foreign-funded handlers, with active plans to escalate attacks on security forces, public infrastructure, and pro-state individuals," the CTD statement read. It added that the operation stood as a testament to the dedication, precision, and inter-agency coordination of Swat CTD and district police who remained committed to safeguarding regional peace and eliminating the threat of militancy. North Waziristan Two terrorists were reportedly killed and several others sustained injuries during a joint operation conducted by police and security forces in the Shiwa tehsil of North Waziristan. The operation took place within the jurisdiction of Chowk Police Post. Hangu Meanwhile, a key terror suspect involved in the attack on Hangu District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Khalid Khan was killed in a follow-up operation. The operation was carried out by Hangu police late Friday night. According to official sources, the intelligence-based operation was launched in the Naryab area within the jurisdiction of Doaba Police Station. Tank An injured terrorist belonging to a banned outfit surrendered to the security forces in Tank district. The suspect had reportedly been involved in anti-state activities.

Centre, Balochistan vow to eliminate terror
The federal government has decided to continue assisting the Balochistan government in operations against terrorists until their complete elimination. According to Express News, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti in Quetta on Saturday. They discussed law and order in the restive province and the measures being taken to eliminate terrorists associated with Fitna-e-Hindustan, a term used to refer to separatist organizations which get support from arch rival India. Both leaders paid tribute to the martyrs and offered prayers for them. Later, a special meeting on law and order was jointly chaired by Naqvi and Bugti. In this meeting, in-depth discussions were held on security operations carried out in various areas. CM Bugti briefed the attendees on the overall security situation and measures being taken to ensure peace. The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the provincial action plan and examined the challenges being faced. Interior Minister Naqvi asserted that the terrorists will meet a horrific and exemplary fate. "We will bring Indian-sponsored terrorists and their facilitators to justice. Those who challenge the writ of the state will be dealt with with an iron hand. The federal government will continue to fully support Balochistan in the war against terrorism," he said. Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti noted that the ongoing war was not just the war of security forces but the war of the entire nation. He stated that all state institutions are working in complete harmony to restore peace in Balochistan. "The sacrifices of our security forces and citizens will not go in vain. Operations against elements involved in terrorism have been intensified and peace will be established at all costs," he said. USCENTCOM chief honoured
President Asif Ali Zardari has conferred the prestigious Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) award on General Michael E Kurilla, Commander of the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), in recognition of his contributions to regional security and the strengthening of bilateral military ties, the military's media wing said on Saturday. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), President Zardari presented the honour during a formal investiture ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr. General Kurilla was recognised for his "exemplary service and pivotal role in advancing enduring military cooperation" between Pakistan and the United States. "General Kurilla's visionary leadership has been instrumental in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing defence collaboration, and deepening counterterrorism cooperation between the Pakistan Armed Forces and USCENTCOM," the statement read. The award reflects Pakistan's appreciation of General Kurilla's "unwavering support" and highlights the growing depth of the military partnership between the two nations. During his visit, General Kurilla met with senior Pakistani leadership, including President Zardari and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Discussions focused on regional security, military-to-military engagement, and joint counterterrorism efforts, the statement added. Upon arrival at the Presidency, General Kurilla was presented with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour.
