
Ryanair's April-June net profit doubles, summer bookings 'robust'
The Irish airline, Europe's largest by passenger numbers, said it was not seeing a trend of later-than-normal bookings reported by some rivals.
"Across the piece, bookings are good," Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan said, adding that consumer confidence was very strong.
The airline reported a net profit of 820 million euros ($953 million) for its first quarter, which ended on June 30, up from 360 million euros in the same period last year when Easter was in March. A Ryanair poll of analysts had expected 716 million euros.
Average fares rose 21% from the same quarter last year, thanks to the timing of Easter and marginally stronger than expected close-in pricing, CEO Michael O'Leary said in a statement.
In the July-September quarter, when European airlines make most of their profit, Ryanair expects to recover almost all of the 7% fare decline seen last year, when it was hit by weak consumer sentiment and a dispute with some online travel agents.
Asked about recent commentary from British low-cost rivals EasyJet (EZJ.L), opens new tab and Jet2 (JET2.L), opens new tab that customers were booking later, Sorahan said: "We're not seeing those kind of trends at all."
Rivals are likely seeing a negative impact from the resolution of Ryanair's dispute with online travel agents, he said.
Ryanair's profit for the year depends heavily on the strength of close-in bookings in August and September, but O'Leary said the rebound in fares should lead to "reasonable net profit growth" for the year to March 31.
As Boeing's (BA.N), opens new tab largest customer in Europe, Ryanair is particularly exposed to the possible imposition of tariffs on commercial aircraft, but said it was hopeful that an exemption for commercial aircraft could be agreed by the United States and European Union.
"We're all hopeful and maybe a little confident that something might get done," CFO Sorahan said.

But she shared a picture of the departure board sayind the flight wasn't expected until 2.35am. She shared the image on her Instagram story saying: "The worst night being had over here." Dr Krishan went on to blast the airline for the lack of information being given to passengers. She added there were no airline staff around to tell them what was going on, people couldn't get medicine from their cases and they couldn't even charge their phones. Her anger was increased by the fact this wasn't the first time she had been delayed on one of the airline's flights. She said: "This isn't the first time this has happened. "I came down to London on easyJet two nights ago from Glasgow and the flight was delayed for over four hours. No explanation was given by any of the staff as to why that happened. 'Tonight, I've been at the airport for several hours, and our flight is again delayed by even more. We have nobody from easyJet who can speak to us and tell us what has happened. 'There are elderly people here who have got their medication in their cases, but we've got no way of getting those back. There's no electricity so none of us can charge anything. They eventually were allowed to board the flight at 2.20am, over five hours after it was supposed to leave. A horrible night, especially with the little one, who was super but it did get too much. 'I've just about kept it together for her but I know I will be having a cry when I get home. "Delays happen — I get that — but transparency and communication in these instances are what bring comfort, reassurance and clarity to passengers. That's all we want. 'However being left in the lurch for hours on end, with vulnerable people unable to access their medications, no food, reduced toilet access and electricity, was a total joke. I'm so disappointed in easyJet customer care.' Easyjet confirmed the delay was caused by a pilot needing medical attention. The delay was sparked as airline chiefs scrambled to find a replacement pilot so they didn't cancel the flight. A spokesperson for easyJet said: "Flight EZY404 from London Luton to Glasgow was delayed due to a pilot on the previous flight requiring medical attention which meant they were unable to operate the flight. "We are very sorry for the experience caused by the delay while we allocated a replacement pilot to avoid cancelling the flight. "The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and we did all possible to look after passengers during the delay and provided refreshment vouchers in the terminal but fully understand it was a difficult situation for them and would like to thank customers for their patience. "We are contacting Dr Krishan directly to understand more about her experience and see if we can assist further."
