In earnings season, it's AI good, everything else, not so much

Time of India4 days ago
Businesses focused on artificial intelligence are raking it in so far this earnings season. Those catering to actual people, less so.The AI spending surge is providing a big boost for semiconductor and software giants like Google parent Alphabet , while companies from airlines to restaurants and food manufacturers are struggling to navigate an erratic U.S. trade policy which is boosting costs, upending supply chains and hurting consumer confidence.Along with Alphabet, SK Hynix and India's Infosys exceeded market forecasts on Thursday and predicted brighter days to come, with Alphabet and SK Hynix both flagging plans to boost spending. SK supplies the world's most valuable company Nvidia, the AI chipmaking giant that recently surpassed $4 trillion in market value.By contrast, executives at many consumer names were less enthusiastic, from luxury bellwether LVMH, packaged food giant Nestle , to toymakers Hasbro and Mattel and airlines Southwest and American . They, along with automakers and giants like Coca-Cola, have indicated that some segments of the buying public have pulled in their spending as prices and interest rates remain high. The dichotomy is evident in IBM's results. Sales in Big Blue's "AI book of business" grew 25 percent in its most recent quarter to $7.5 billion, while its software segment fell short of expectations and the company sounded cautious about how much its consulting segment might grow this year. The equity market has accentuated the positive. News that the U.S. had struck a trade deal with Japan and was closing in on a deal with the European Union ahead of an Aug 1. deadline boosted markets. The broad S&P 500 notched another record this week and the Eurostoxx was just a few points shy of that mark."The market is getting friendly with a view that tariffs ending up higher than they have ever been for 100 years will not have a negative impact on economic growth, because we haven't seen any negative impact on economic growth so far," said Van Luu, head of solutions strategy, fixed income and foreign exchange at Russell Investments.Whether companies continue to absorb that hit remains to be seen. So far, companies have reported over July 16-22 a combined full-year loss of as much as $7.8 billion, with automotive, aerospace and pharmaceutical sectors hurt the most by tariffs, according to a Reuters tariff tracker. U.S. averages have been buoyed by the so-called Magnificent Seven, a group of tech giants that has benefited heavily from spending plans on artificial intelligence, and currently accounts for more than 30% of the value of the S&P."AI is one of the strongest areas of growth for the economy, and the market mirrors the economy," said Adam Sarhan, chief executive of 50 Park Investments. To be sure, the market's reaction may be in part because a larger-than-normal percentage of companies are clearing a lowered bar for estimates. At the beginning of April, the market expected 10.2% year-over-year S&P earnings growth, but by July, that number had dropped to 5.8%, according to LSEG data. With about 30% of constituents reporting results, the blended earnings growth rate sits at 7.7%.AI-focused businesses continued to print money in the most recent quarter. Nvidia supplier SK Hynix posted record quarterly profit, boosted by demand for artificial intelligence chips and customers stockpiling ahead of potential U.S. tariffs. Indian IT services provider Infosys raised the floor of its annual revenue forecast range to 1% to 3%, from flat to 3%, matching analyst expectations. "The tech community is going ahead full speed ahead... and banks are in a very strong position now," said Bill George, former chairman and CEO of Medtronic and executive education fellow at Harvard Business School. "Other companies will struggle to get growth."Consumer companies have been less upbeat. Nestle, the world's biggest packaged food maker, reported softer demand as it struggled to win thrifty shoppers to its big brands.U.S. airlines Southwest and American Airlines warned that Americans are travelling less, the latest signal that U.S. consumers are remaining cautious about their spending. Toymakers Mattel and Hasbro both said uncertainties around tariffs are acting as a headwind. Carmakers are among firms dealing with the most difficulty. The auto giants are resisting raising prices, eating the cost of tariffs that may cost them millions or billions of dollars. Levies on metals, copper and auto parts made it harder to navigate changing tariff policies. South Korea's Hyundai Motor on Thursday posted a 16% decline in second-quarter operating profit, saying U.S. tariffs cost it 828 billion won ($606.5 million) in the second quarter, with a bigger hit expected in the current quarter. General Motors still expects a $4 billion to $5 billion hit to its bottom line this year. On Wednesday, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said U.S. government cuts in support for electric vehicle makers could lead to a "few rough quarters", as his firm reported its worst quarterly sales decline in over a decade.

Google Maps is crashing while navigating for public transit routes, users report

If Google Maps has suddenly started crashing every time you check transit directions, you're not alone. Over the past few hours, users across Reddit, Google's support forums and tech publications have reported a frustrating bug that shuts down the app when searching for bus, metro or train routes. Users report Google Maps crashing when checking public transport routes(Pexels) Google Maps crashing during transit searches: What we know so far According to early reports, first spotted on Reddit, the bug kicks in only when users try to search for public transport directions. Everything else, including driving, walking and biking routes, works just fine. But the moment you switch to transit, the app crashes back to the home screen. Android Police was able to replicate the crash on version 25.30.00.78516346 of the app, pointing to the latest update as a possible trigger. What's odd is that not everyone is affected. Some people on the same version of the app say it's working perfectly fine. Others, on Pixel, Samsung and even Redmagic phones are seeing consistent crashes. A quick look at Downdetector shows a slight rise in Google Maps-related complaints, though it hasn't exploded into a widespread outage just yet. Apple Maps and CarPlay users are noticing glitches too Interestingly, the issue isn't limited to Android users. iPhone users who rely on CarPlay have also reported glitches, most notably, the app giving incorrect or misleading directions. While it's not clear if the iOS related issues are linked to the same bug, the timing is suspicious. There's also no official word from Google yet. No acknowledgement on their Maps status page, and no mention of a fix coming soon. That's not ideal, especially since so many users rely on Maps for their daily commute. Google Maps alternatives while the bug is fixed While there's no guaranteed fix right now, one workaround seems to be helping some Android users, using Google Maps in Incognito Mode. You can turn this on by tapping your profile icon in the app and selecting 'Turn on Incognito mode.' It's not perfect, your trips won't be saved, but at least the app won't crash. Other than that, you might want to consider using alternatives like Citymapper, Moovit or Apple Maps until this gets sorted. Sadly, rolling back to an older version of Google Maps doesn't seem to work in every case. The issue has not been officially addressed Right now, the bug hasn't been officially addressed, but it's starting to gain visibility online. If you're affected, it helps to report your experience include your device, location, and app version on Google's support forums. The more noise users make, the quicker we might see a patch.

Google Pixel 10 series images leak again ahead of launch, new colours tipped

Google has already announced that the Google Pixel 10 series will launch on 21 August in the Indian market. However, regarding the official reveals, the company has only shown a small teaser of the Pixel 10 Pro in the new Moonstone colourway. Google has kept the other Pixel 10 series models under wraps so far. Google Pixel 10 series image as posted by Evan Blass on X(Evan Blass) Although we have seen multiple leaks showing the Pixel 10 in different colourways, another leak from Evan Blass, a veteran tipster in the tech community, has revealed what appear to be the official renders of the Pixel 10 family. This includes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold (if that will be its name), the Pixel 10 Pro, the Pixel 10 Pro XL and the new Pixel 10, which seems to be the most interesting model this time, alongside the new Pixel Buds and the Pixel Watch 4. Here are the details. New Colours Tipped Again Based on images shared by Blass, we can confirm that there will be four different Pixel 10 series models this time: the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the Pixel 10 Pro XL, the Pixel 10 Pro and the regular Pixel 10. The images also confirm that the base Pixel 10 will ship with three cameras: which could be a wide, an ultra-wide and a telephoto lens, making the camera setup more versatile. However, reports suggest that the sensors could be changed, but this, of course, remains to be seen. We also get to see the different colourways that were leaked by Android Headlines a few days ago, including a new blue for the Pixel 10, a light green (could be called Jade) for the Pixel 10 Pro, and the Moonstone colourway for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. As for the Pixel Watch 4, it looks identical to the previous version. It seems Google is following Apple's strategy of maintaining a distinct aesthetic so that people associate the look with Pixel Watches, hence the repeated design. Considering that multiple tipsters have now shared the same renders, and these latest ones are of a much higher resolution, it reinforces the same details, giving us confidence about what to expect from the Pixel 10 series on 21 August in India. What More Do We Know? The Pixel 10 series will be powered by the Tensor G5 chipset, which will reportedly be manufactured by TSMC on a 3nm process. This is expected to bring both performance and efficiency upgrades. Further, based on multiple reports, the design, including that of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, is expected to remain largely the same. Google launched this new design language last year, featuring flat sides and a disconnected camera module that floats on the top half of the phone's back.
