Family of British couple held in Iran urge UK to raise case in talks with Tehran

The Guardian4 days ago
The son of a British woman who has been held in Iran since January on espionage charges along with her husband has called on the UK government to raise their case during talks with Iran reportedly taking place in Istanbul later this week.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both 52, were arrested on 3 January in Kervan, southern Iran, while travelling through the country from Armenia to Pakistan on a motorcycle journey to Australia.
The family, who have not had direct contact with the couple since their incarceration, have said promises from the Foreign Office in the past fortnight to arrange conversations with the couple had not materialised.
Six weeks ago, the Foreign Office said it did not know the couple's whereabouts, despite initially having said they were being transferred to Evin prison in Tehran.
Lindsay's eldest son, Joe Bennett, said the family were past breaking point. 'The silence is intolerable, inhumane and a stain on the duty of care that the British government owes its citizens.'
'While other countries are ensuring their citizens' cases are raised at the highest levels in negotiations with Iran, we are left shouting into the void, writing letters, running social media campaigns, tagging David Lammy and Keir Starmer and hearing nothing. We are losing faith,' said Bennett, 31.
After Israel's bombing of Tehran's Evin prison on 23 June that left more than 70 dead, the family said they 'endured unimaginable fear', uncertain of the couple's wellbeing. Yesterday, the family said they learned the couple was moved from Kervan to a location in Tehran, but said the British government had not confirmed their safety or wellbeing.
The Foreign Office has been approached for comment.
Renewed calls for their release come after nearly two weeks of war between Israel and Iran in June, during which the US bombed a number of Iran's nuclear sites and brought nuclear talks to an abrupt end.
As Iran maintains a fragile ceasefire with the US and Israel, the family has called on the UK government to table the couple's case after learning negotiations between the UK and Iran were set to take place in Istanbul later this week.
The UK, France and Germany – the E3, which signed the original nuclear deal with Iran in 2015 – reportedly met Iranian officials for nuclear talks in Istanbul last week, after threatening to reimpose 'snapback' UN sanctions without the risk of a security council veto, so long as they act by its expiry in October.
The 2015 deal does not allow other signatories, China or Russia, to veto the sanctions snapback, and since leaving the deal in 2018, the US cannot veto the UK or EU move.
The family has also called for immediate public commitment from the foreign secretary, David Lammy, and Keir Starmer, as well as to prioritise urgent and regular phone calls, consular visits and medical and legal support. It is understood the British couple have been visited by consular officials three times, the most recent in May, and have had no medical or consular visits for more than 75 days.
'We cannot and will not remain silent while our loved ones are left to disappear into the shadows of bureaucracy and apathy,' said Bennett. 'This is no longer just a diplomatic issue. It is a humanitarian emergency. The government must act now, before it's too late.'
On 23 July, the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) for arbitrary detention and hostage affairs wrote to the UK foreign secretary, urging the government to prioritise their case and take further steps to secure their release.
'They are innocent British nationals falsely accused of espionage and held hostage by Iran for political leverage,' said the letter to David Lammy, signed by the parliamentary chair and MP Alicia Kearns, and others.
'Mistakes made in past cases, including the cases of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori, must be learnt from,' it added. 'Past cases demonstrate the significant strain placed upon families in working to secure the release of their loved ones.'

British man linked to ‘one of London's most dangerous crime gangs' arrested

A British man accused of being an assassin has been arrested in the Costa del Sol. The suspect, who was reported by officers to be on the run and having links with 'one of London's most dangerous crime gangs', was found to have pistols, ammunition and a silencer in his crashed Nissan Qashqai following his arrest. He is alleged to have harassed two Dutch women after getting them to buy him cocaine in an incident at a petrol station and crashed his car, according to the local paper Diario Sur. The man, who is wanted for 'several murders', attempted to flee as officers arrived at the scene, in an area known as Riviera, between La Cala de Mijas and Marbella, it was reported by The Sun. A spokesperson for Mijas police said: 'A British man has been arrested in Riviera who had a warrant out for him ordering his remand in prison for murder.' He added: 'While conducting surveillance work in La Cala de Mijas, officers were called yesterday to deal with an altercation at a petrol station in the area. 'Upon arrival, they interviewed a customer at the station who stated that a foreign man who had been harassing her had already driven away from the scene. 'Shortly afterwards, a call was received alerting us to an accident on Orfebres Street in Riviera. 'Upon arrival the officers found a damaged vehicle that matched the one involved in the incident at the petrol station.' The images of the wreckage showed two pistols, ammunition, a silencer, a notebook with names and addresses, along with a book titled 'Practical Buddhism and the Search for Self' within the vehicle. Diario Sur reported on Saturday: 'An investigation remains open to clarify his links with organised crime.' It comes as two alleged members of a 'professional' robbery gang were arrested in Marbella following raids on around nine tourist flats.

Billionaire fraudster Elizabeth Holmes seen enjoying facilities at Ghislaine Maxwell's cushy new prison

Blood tech fraudster Elizabeth Holmes was spotted enjoying some leisure time at the same cushy Texas prison Ghislaine Maxwell has just been moved to. The disgraced Theranos founder became jail mates with Maxwell at Federal Prison Camp Bryan after the notorious madam was moved to the facility Thursday. Barring a longshot pardon from President Donald Trump, Maxwell will spend about seven years incarcerated at the same time as Holmes, who is scheduled to be released on April 3, 2032. Maxwell, who was convicted in June 2022 recruiting underage girls into Jeffrey Epstein 's sex trafficking ring, had been serving her sentence at a more restrictive prison in Florida. But she was moved after complaining to authorities that she was fed up of listening to transgender prisoners having loud sex. On Saturday, Holmes was seen taking a leisurely jog in a grassy area of the minimum security Texas prison. She was wearing a gray T-shirt and matching gray shorts with black sneakers. She also appeared to be wearing a watch. She was notably without fellow high profile inmate Jen Shah, the former Real Housewife of Salt Lake City who is also incarcerated at the facility. Shah pleaded guilty to fraud charges related to a telemarketing scheme she ran targeting the elderly. Photos have also shown Holmes and Shah running at the same time while engaging in cozy chats. Maxwell, who herself has been pictured running at her Florida prison, will likely soon run into both women. Camp Bryan is an all-female prison, unlike the Tallahassee prison, which housed men and women. The camp is also a much more comfortable prison that holds primarily white-collar criminals and not people convicted of violent crimes. Maxwell's sudden removal to Texas from a low-security prison in Tallahassee outraged Epstein's victims and their families. 'This is the justice system failing victims right before our eyes,' said sisters Annie and Maria Farmer and members of Virginia Giuffre's family in a statement obtained by Daily Mail. 'Ghislaine Maxwell is a sexual predator who physically assaulted minor children on multiple occasions, and she should never be shown any leniency. 'Yet, without any notification to the Maxwell victims, the government overnight has moved Maxwell to a minimum security luxury prison in Texas.' Prison consultant Justin Paperny told Daily Mail he had never seen anyone convicted of a sex offense serve time in a minimum security prison such as Camp Bryan. 'She was in a low security prison, that looks like prisons on TV or in the movies. You're fenced in, razor wire, women serving typically 10 years or longer, more violent crime, sexual offenses,' Paperny said. Paperny runs White Collar Advice, which advises future inmates on what to expect inside. 'She will feel incredibly free. There is a very low staff to prisoner ratio and camps like Bryan, no fences or barbed wire,' he said. 'You can literally walk off and nobody will stop you. It's a cushy country club and looks like a corporate office park or a junior college.' Maxwell will also be able to purchase beauty and leisure items from the commissary, including make-up and crochet and sewing kits. There is even a softball field and pickleball courts at the facility. It is undoubtedly a huge upgrade for Maxwell, who was previously dealing with transgender prisoners having loud sex out in the open, a source told Daily Mail. The source also said Maxwell was bitter and frequently complained about the conditions at the Tallahassee prison. 'There was inadequate food. Ghislaine is a vegetarian and each prisoner is supposed to get 8oz of protein a day, but she was getting 2oz or less. The food was moldy. Everyone, not just Ghislaine, complained about the food,' the source said. Maxwell's lawyer David Oscar Markus confirmed to Daily Mail that she was moved from the Tallahassee prison on Thursday. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed the transfer on Friday. Neither Markus or the BOP have offered any reason for why Maxwell was moved. This comes the Trump administration struggles to contain the fallout of its decision not to release the unredacted Epstein files. Maxwell has promised to testify about what she knows about the Epstein case in exchange for immunity or a presidential pardon. House leaders have roundly rejected giving her immunity, while people close to Trump have insisted a pardon is not in the works.
