'Got Humbled': Vibe Coder Caught Using AI By Boss Gets Schooled

NDTVa day ago
For a long time, writing code meant that software engineers sat long hours in front of a computer, typing out lines of instructions in a programming language. But in recent times, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has allowed anyone to 'vibe code', meaning the technology churns out the code after a user feeds it what they want. Now, an intern working at two places who used a similar modus operandi has revealed how the vibe conding tactic backfired for them.
As per the now-viral post, the user said they were using Cursor/GPT to ship the product quickly whilst working at two companies.
"I'm currently interning at 2 companies SRE at one, and SDE at a very early-stage startup (like 20 employees). At the startup, it's just me and the CTO in tech. They're funded ($5M), but super early," wrote the user in the r/developersIndia subreddit.
While all was going well, the CTO of one of the companies started asking them in-depth questions about their code and this is where things turned pear-shaped.
"The CTO started asking deep dive questions about the code. Stuff like, "Why did you structure it this way?" or "Explain what this function does internally." The code was mostly AI-generated, and I honestly couldn't explain parts of it properly."
"He straight up told me: "I don't mind if you use AI, but you have to know what your code is doing." Then he started explaining my code to me. Bruh. I was cooked."
The OP said the entire experience was 'super humbling' as he had been vibe coding without really understanding the "deeper stuff like architecture, modularisation, and writing clean, production-level code".
'How did you even...'
As the post went viral, garnering hundreds of upvotes, social media users agreed with the CTO's remarks, while others questioned how the OP had landed the internship without knowing what the code meant.
"I am working as QA, and you can't replace experience. You will have to learn over time. But asking questions is also a good approach. Why and how," said one user while another added: "Get to know your application's core system design. Decide your architecture which can scale in production later. Now use this as a knowledge base in Cursor/ChatGPT."
A third commented: "If you can't say what that code is doing by looking at it, then how did you even get 2 internships?"
A fourth said: "Best way to learn how to write clean code is reading open source project code. Hands down its the best way to learn plus have a curious mind."
Notably, the term vibe coding has been popularised by Andrej Karpathy, who has worked with companies like Tesla and OpenAI.

After Mumbai, Tesla to open 2nd India store in Delhi on August 11: Reports

Elon Musk's EV maker Tesla is all set to open its second store in India in the Delhi. The store will be opened at Worldmark 3 in Delhi's Aerocity on August 11, according to reports. With its Mumbai launch, Tesla initially offered two versions of the Model Y in India.(Representational Photo/Reuters) This comes after Tesla entered the Indian market with its first store in Mumbai last month. The construction for the new Tesla showroom, which is targeted to tap Delhi and the National Capital Region, is almost complete. Earlier on Monday, Tesla launched its first charging facility at Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex, weeks after its store opened there, reported ANI news agency. Tesla's entry in India On July 15 this year, Tesla officially entered the Indian market after months of speculation with its first store in Maharashtra's Mumbai. It also launched its Model Y electric vehicle in India, with its price starting from ₹60 lakh (approximately $70,000) for its debut in the world's third-largest automobile market. Tesla's Model Y With its Mumbai launch, Tesla initially offered two versions of the Model Y in India. One is the rear-wheel drive model priced at ₹60.1 lakh ($70,000) and the long-range variant at ₹67.8 lakh ($79,000). These prices are significantly higher than other global markets. The same Model Y is priced at ₹38.6 lakh ($44,990) in the US, ₹30.5 lakh ($36,700) in China (263,500 yuan), and ₹46 lakh ($53,700) in Germany (€45,970). This huge disparity in costs is mostly because of India's steep import duties. The Rear-Wheel Drive version of Model Y offers a 500 km range and will be able to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 59 seconds. The Long Range Rear-Wheel one offers a range of 622 km and will go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Apart from their speeds, other features of both the versions of Model Y include 9 speakers, a 15.4-inch front-row touch screen and second-generation suspension noise reduction hardware.

Tesla To Open 2nd India Showroom In Delhi's Aerocity On August 11

New Delhi: Tesla is set to expand its presence in India's electric vehicle market with the launch of its second retail outlet in the country. The new Tesla Experience Centre will open on August 11 at Aerocity's upscale Worldmark 3 complex in the national capital, catering to customers in the national capital region -- a key hub for India's electric mobility push. This opening comes less than a month after Tesla inaugurated its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15 at the Maker Maxity mall in Bandra Kurla Complex. The high-profile Mumbai launch was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who praised Tesla's entry into the state and invited the company to set up R&D and manufacturing facilities there. The Aerocity facility, currently in the final stages of construction, is expected to command a monthly rent of around Rs 25 lakh. Images of the nearly completed outlet have already surfaced on social media -- highlighting the brand's premium positioning in India. Tesla is presently offering one model in the Indian market -- the Model Y -- priced from Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available in two versions: a standard rear-wheel drive with a 60 kWh battery offering a WLTP-certified range of 500 km, and a long-range rear-wheel drive variant with a 75 kWh battery delivering up to 622 km on a single charge. Deliveries will be prioritised for buyers in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Gurugram, with vehicles transported on flat-bed trucks directly to customers' homes. The company has also updated its website to allow vehicle registration across all states and union territories, expanding access beyond its initial launch cities. While Tesla lists its full self-driving (FSD) feature as an optional extra for Rs 6 lakh, the advanced capability will be introduced in India at a later stage. The debut of Tesla's Indian website coincided with the Model Y launch -- signalling the company's readiness to scale operations despite challenges in EV infrastructure and policy.
