Safety protocols have been updated for I-70 through Glenwood Canyon
CDOT said there has been a reduced threat level compared to previous years based on burn scar recovery and debris flow potential. This improvement comes after CDOT – along with the U.S. Forest Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey – worked ahead of the summer season to update safety protocols for motorists and crews.
Officials believe normal conditions will be in store for Glenwood Canyon for this summer.
The safety protocols include flash flood watches. CDOT crews will conduct standard traffic control measures at all closure points and will monitor conditions in the canyon by using cameras and personnel on the ground.
For flash flood warnings, crews will monitor conditions and keep I-70 open – along with rest areas and recreation paths – if it is safe, CDOT said.
CDOT said motorists can keep up to date on road conditions by visiting COtrip.org.

MONTROSE COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – Black Canyon of the Gunnison has seen several structures, overlooks and a campground have been destroyed or heavily damaged from the South Rim Fire, according to the National Parks Service. NPS said the facility management building, the Western National Parks warehouse, the welding shop, several pieces of heavy equipment, the South Rim Campground, and numerous bathrooms and overlooks were affected by the wildfire. However, the park service noted the South Rim Visitor Center, the administration building and the entrance booth survived the blaze. Although the park's total estimated loss is unknown, NPS announced all reservations for the South Rim Campground and Wilderness Permits are cancelled, with no re-opening date. When the fire is fully contained, damage and safety assessments will begin, according to NPS. The park service said high temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds and dry vegetation have caused the fire to spread faster at Black Canyon. Over 4,200 acres have burned so far, with 14% of it contained as of Friday morning. Blue Mesa Reservoir remains closed west of the middle bridge, while Lake Fork Boat Ramp is not open to launching boats. Curecanti National Recreation Area is open to the public. Evacuations ordered due to fire in western Colorado north of Parachute
Colorado officials have ordered evacuations due to a fire burning in Garfield County. The Garfield County Emergency Community Relations Authority issued an alert around 3:22 p.m. Thursday directing all residents within one mile of 1800 County Road 309 to evacuate. The area is just north of the town of Parachute. As of 3:44 p.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation has not closed I-70. Stage 2 fire restrictions went into effect in Garfield County as of 20:01 a.m. Thursday. The fire restrictions prohibit the use of fireworks, put a pause on issuing burn permits and ban recreational fires.

UPDATE: Evacuation ordered for all areas on HWY 141 between mile markers 124-128
MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – An evacuation order was put in place Thursday morning between mile markers 124 to 128 on Highway 141 due to the fires near Gateway. For those who had to leave their homes because of the fire, the evacuation center is at the Clifton Community Center, 3270 D 1/2 Road in Clifton. MCSO wanted to remind the public that this is not a housing shelter. Those who have been displaced will be assessed for needs and connected to resources. Additionally, those who have large animals that need shelter can call 970-778-0161. According to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit, the Turner Gulch Fire was last mapped at 1,020 acres, while the Wright Draw Fire was at 228 acres. Due to the fires, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office issued a pre-evacuation order for areas near mile markers 128 and 131 on Highway 141. Over 200 firefighters are working on the fire, with more resources anticipated to arrive soon.
