Al-Hilal overturn deficit to reach Asian Champions League quarter-finals
Riyad Mahrez scored twice late in the game to complete Al-Ahli's victory over Qatar's Al-Rayyan, the former Manchester City winger netting in the 77th and 83rd minutes to earn a 2-0 win in Jeddah and a 5-1 victory overall.
Al-Hilal bounced back from a 1-0 loss in the first leg in Tashkent last week to secure a 4-1 aggregate success over Pedro Moreira's Pakhtakor side with a commanding performance at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
The hosts pulled level on aggregate in the 31st minute through Hamad Al Yami's diving header after Salem Al-Dawsari's backheel released Mohamed Kanno behind the defence and his cross to the far post was directed home.
Eleven minutes later the Saudis doubled their tally as Kanno charged through Pakhtakor's midfield from deep inside his own half to deliver a defence-splitting pass from which Malcom slid his shot beyond goalkeeper Jhonatan.
Yassine Bounou denied Pakhtakor striker Flamarion with a reflex save early in the second half and that was to prove decisive as Al-Dawsari struck from the penalty spot in the 51st minute, scoring after being upended by Khodjiakbar Alijonov.
Nasser Al-Dawsari rolled the ball in from close range in the 92nd minute to complete the rout.
Victory takes Al-Hilal into Monday's draw for the final stages of the competition, which will be played in a centralised format in Jeddah from April 25 until May 3.
"We just wanted to win so bad, for the supporters, for everybody, for us," said Al-Hilal defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
"We knew that the first game was difficult in difficult conditions but today we showed our talent, our team on the pitch. We wanted to win so bad and we showed it."
Al-Ahli went into their second leg against Al-Rayyan with a two-goal cushion and, despite dominating throughout the first half, it was not until 13 minutes from time that Matthias Jaissle's side added to their lead.
Mahrez showed his balance and poise to control Galeno's lofted ball over the Al-Rayyan defence before turning and lifting his shot past goalkeeper Paulo Victor.
The Algerian doubled his side's lead six minutes later with an emphatic finish, stroking home following a lay-off in the penalty area by Gabri Veiga.
The results mean all three Saudi Arabian clubs involved in the competition have qualified for the quarter-finals after Al-Nassr booked their place on Monday alongside Qatar's Al-Sadd.
Japan's Yokohama F Marinos and Buriram United from Thailand have also qualified following respective wins over Shanghai Port and Johor Darul Ta'zim on Tuesday.
Kawasaki Frontale take on Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday when Vissel Kobe play Gwangju FC to determine the remaining qualifiers for the next round.

LA28 unveils Olympic competition schedule, marks PlayLA milestone
LOS ANGELES, July 14 (Reuters) - Organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics on Monday released the first look at the Olympic competition schedule, highlighting a historic reshuffling of key events and the most ambitious sports lineup in Games history. The announcement comes as the city marks three years to go until the Opening Ceremony and celebrates a major legacy milestone: more than one million enrolments in the PlayLA youth sports programme. For the first time in nearly three decades, the Summer Olympics will return to the United States, with Los Angeles hosting for the third time after 1932 and 1984. The 2028 Games are set to feature 844 ticketed events designed to maximize both domestic and international viewership. Organizers revealed that the Opening Ceremony will take place on July 14, 2028, at 8:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. PT), split between the LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Closing Ceremony is scheduled for July 30 at the Coliseum. In a notable departure from tradition, the LA28 schedule swaps the usual order of athletics and swimming competitions. Track and field events will open the Games in the first week, with swimming moving to the second week, culminating in its finale on the penultimate day at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The first Olympic champion of LA28 will be crowned at Venice Beach in the triathlon event, while the marathon will close out athletics on the final weekend. Day 15 is expected to be the busiest for medal events, with 16 team sport finals and 19 individual sport finals taking place. "The Olympic competition schedule has been meticulously developed to ensure the world's best athletes can compete in LA," LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said in a statement. "We are energized by today's milestones and remain focused on the work ahead as the Road to 2028 continues." Organizers said the schedule will continue to be refined, with a more detailed breakdown to be released later this year. "When the world comes here for these Games, we will highlight every neighbourhood as we host a Games for all and work to ensure it leaves a monumental legacy," LA Mayor Karen Bass said. Meanwhile, Hoover joined city officials on Monday at an event at the Coliseum to celebrate PlayLA surpassing one million programme enrolments. The initiative, backed by up to $160 million in investment from LA28, the city's Recreation and Parks Department, and the IOC, provides affordable and inclusive sports programming for children aged 3-17 across more than 40 Olympic and adaptive sports.

It's not known if the thieves managed to steal anything from the car. But Toney expressed his displeasure with a caption that read: 'This is why I hate London.' The ex-Peterborough ace could find himself back in London in September if he retains his place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad. Toney was recalled for June's matches against Andorra and Senegal. 'That's what he can give' - Stroppy Tuchel suggests Ivan Toney will NOT get more playing time due to 'specialist' role While Toney managed just several minutes in the shock 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Ronaldo's ex-team-mate pulls no punches with what he's really like - 'Crazy'
Cristiano Ronaldo is considered by many to be the best footballer of all time, and one former team-mate has accredited his success to one particular habit he couldn't ignore Former Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi has laid bare the tireless work ethic that's made Cristiano Ronaldo arguably the best of all time. Matuidi, 38, spent two seasons playing alongside Ronaldo in Turin, where he got a first-hand look at the processes that have shaped the five-time Ballon d'Or -winner. Ronaldo has won just about every major trophy available to him over the course of his 23 years in professional football to date. And the 40-year-old, currently plying his trade for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, continues to operate at elite levels even far beyond the average retirement age. It was Ronaldo wearing the captain's armband as Portugal beat Spain to lift the UEFA Nations League title for the second time in June. Many thought the veteran was heading to Saudi Arabia for an easy retirement in 2023, but he has also clinched the division's Golden Boot in the last two campaigns. These things don't happen by chance, however, and Matuidi has seen the work behind the scenes that maketh the man. Even if that means getting a quick workout in in the wee hours when most of his peers are sleeping. "Cristiano was an incredible professional, obsessed with work," said the World Cup -winner in an interview with Italian daily Tuttosport. "One night we returned to Continassa at 2am after a league match to retrieve our cars. "We were exhausted, but he still persuaded [former Juventus defender Mehdi] Benatia to accompany him to the gym for some recovery work. I thought he was crazy [laughs]. Ronaldo was like that, he never stopped. That's the secret of his success and why he still manages to make a difference today." It perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise that one as successful as Ronaldo is of the opinion sleep is for the weak. After all, one doesn't get a physique like his at 40 years of age without putting in the work at times when others would rather rest. Ronaldo and Matuidi won two Serie A titles during their time together with the Bianconeri. Ronaldo was named Serie A Footballer of the Year in both 2019 and 2020, averaging around 34 goals per season across his three campaigns in Italy. The consummate professional isn't accustomed to letting his own standards slip, nor those around him. Ronaldo's tale is far from finished, too, after penning a fresh two-year deal with Al-Nassr in June. And former France anchor Matuidi isn't the first team-mate to be blown away by the high standards Ronaldo insists on driving off the field. Former Manchester United colleague Patrice Evra was also taken aback to see the lengths 'CR7' will go to in order to ensure he remains ahead of the competition. "I would give advice to anybody, when Cristiano invites you for lunch at his house, just say no," he said on the ITV World Cup podcast. "He once said, 'Patrice, come over after training.' I went, you know I was really tired, [and] at the table there was only salad and plain white chicken so I was like, okay, and water, not any juice. "We started eating and I was thinking some big meat would be coming after that but there was nothing. He just finished and he stood up and he started playing with a ball, doing some skills and he said, 'Let's do some two-touch.' I was like, can I just finish eating? "He said 'No, no let's play two-touch.' We start playing two touch. After that he said let's go to the pool to swim, I was like okay… after going in the jacuzzi, the sauna, I'm done. I say, 'Cristiano, why have we come here? Have we come here because we have a game tomorrow, or just for lunch?'" It gives some insight as to what one can expect to undertake if they want to reach the top of the game. Unsurprisingly, not everyone is cut out to go to those lengths.
