Jacksonville Police Department, Onslow County Sheriff's Office participate in annual torch run
The run includes Jacksonville Police Department officers, Chief Jarad Phelps and Onslow County Sheriff's Office deputies. This benefits Special Olympics North Carolina, a non-profit that helps intellectually disabled athletes compete in twenty different sports programs year-round.
The run will begin with police officers at the Department of Public Safety and onto the Onslow County Sheriff's Department where the torch will be passed to deputies for leg 4 at Piney Green Road.
The Flame of Hope is carried across the state in The Torch Run Final Leg to light a cauldron that officially opens the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games. The Jacksonville Police Department has participated in the annual run for over 20 years.

Woodstock to host Special Olympics 2025 summer games
Event will determine Team NB for the national stage On July 17, over 200 athletes and their coaches will arrive in Woodstock for the 2025 Special Olympics Summer Games. The opening ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the AYR Motor Centre, with teams escorted by local pipers and police. The Flame of Hope will ignite the cauldron to mark the official start. From Friday, July 18 to Saturday, July 19, competitors from seven New Brunswick regions, along with softball teams from Nova Scotia and PEI, will compete in five events: athletics, bocce, golf, softball, and swimming. Results will help select Team NB for the 2026 National Canada Summer Games and potentially the 2027 World Games. Debbi Graham, the Regional Coordinator in the Western Valley Region, is hoping for a strong local turnout, particularly to support Western Valley athletes competing against top regional talent. 'We really hope to fill the bleachers at our opening ceremony. Throughout the competitions on Friday and Saturday, it will be the best chance for local folks to witness world-class athletes compete to represent Team NB at the 2026 national games and possibly on to the 2027 World games in Santiago, Chile,' said Graham. Law enforcement runs from Fischer to Champaign for Special Olympics
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — It was all smiles across Champaign County on Friday as law enforcement participated in an annual tradition — the Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics. The Torch Run is the largest public awareness and fundraising event for Special Olympics Illinois. In Champaign County, officers started running at 5:30 in the morning in Fischer. Urbana police officer recalls near-death experience while on the job The route took them through Rantoul, Thomasboro, Urbana and Champaign and ended at the Olympic Monument at Parkland College in the early afternoon. That's a distance of 17 miles. Gymnast Summer Nagele said the Special Olympics program creates fun opportunities for athletes all over the world and she was among the many who were helped by it. 'I really like Special Olympics, and it has helped me learn a whole lot of different sports and see which ones I like and which ones I don't like,' Nagele said. Torch runs similar to Friday's happened all over Illinois and will continue into next week, when the Illinois Special Olympics Summer Games start in Bloomington. TGSO hosts run for Special Olympics Texas
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office is hosting a run to raise funds for Special Olympics Texas. TGSO is joining the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics with a 1K and 5K run in San Angelo on July 19 at the Red Arroyo Trail (Milbrook Loop) at 8:30 a.m. 'This is our first run that we're putting together with Special Olympics,' said Lt. Quentin Williams. This is a family-friendly event to help raise funds to help with the cost of uniforms and the cost of travel for athletes. Registration for the run is online at $25 per person and includes a t-shirt. Donations are also available online for those who want to help but do not want to participate in the event. 'Anybody in the community can sign up for this actual run. It's a for-fun run,' Williams said. Volunteers for the event can contact or at 325-450-0188 for more information.
