He is himself accused of having had ties to paramilitary fighters who often had the backing of agrarian elites. Uribe denies the claims, which are at the heart of his criminal conviction Monday for witness tampering.
As president, Uribe adopted a hard line against the Marxist-inspired Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which he accused of killing his father in a botched 1983 kidnapping attempt.

With US backing for his campaign, several FARC leaders were killed on Uribe's orders and soldiers were deployed en masse in operations that gave many Colombians a sense of security, although the violence never diminished.
Uribe, a US- and British-educated lawyer who prides himself on being a workaholic who cannot sing, dance or tell jokes, counts a passion for horses among his few distractions.
He is a staunch Roman Catholic who practices yoga in the morning and prays at night.
Uribe entered politics after his father's death, serving as a senator, mayor of his hometown Medellin, and governor of Antioquia -- Colombia's most populated department.
As president, he successfully pushed a constitutional change that allowed him to be re-elected for a second consecutive term -- a reform later overturned by Colombia's highest court.
Arguing he needed continuity to see out his battle against armed insurgents and the drug trade they controlled, Uribe also tried, unsuccessfully, to secure a third presidential term.
Betrayal
Uribe earned praise from Washington for his tough anti-drug policies and strong economic growth as president.
Detractors call him an authoritarian who failed the poor.
After his presidency ended, Uribe served another term in Congress from 2014-2020 and has continued campaigning for the political right and his Democratic Center party since then.
He was instrumental in the choice of his successor: Juan Manuel Santos, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts towards a peace deal with the FARC in 2016.
For Uribe, this was the ultimate betrayal.
His vehement rejection of the agreement that saw the FARC down arms in 2017 has been gaining ground as recent peace efforts have failed under President Gustavo Petro -- Colombia's first-ever leftist president, in office since 2022.
Divisive figure
A man of short posture and deliberate speech, Uribe is a divisive figure: loved and hated in equal measure.
He is known for losing his temper, once being recorded insulting a journalist and threatening physical violence.
Even fervent detractors recognize his oratory and administrative skills.
But his legacy has been tainted by numerous corruption and espionage claims swirling around members of his entourage.
Uribe is under investigation for more than 6,000 civilian executions and forced disappearances allegedly committed by the military under his command.
He has also testified in a preliminary probe into a 1997 paramilitary massacre of subsistence farmers when he was governor of Antioquia from 1995 to 1997.
During his life, Uribe claims to have survived 15 assassination attempts, including a rocket attack by former guerrillas on the day of his first inauguration.
Uribe is married and has two grown sons who have had to answer claims that they rode on his presidential coattails to become successful entrepreneurs.
His conviction on Monday made him the first former Colombian president to be found guilty of a crime.

An FIR has been lodged against a local Samajwadi Party (SP) leader in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur for allegedly teaching children 'politicised alphabets' during a 'PDA Pathshala'. Akhilesh Yadav slams UP govt over FIR: "Even the British didn't file FIRs for studying... BJP's anti-education face exposed. Now they'll be gone forever. Condemnable."(PTI) Police officials said that a complaint was filed alleging that the children were taught "A for Akhilesh", "B for Babasaheb", "D for Dimple," and 'M for Mulayam Singh Yadav', news agency PTI reported on Sunday. SP City Vyom Bindal said that Main Singh, a resident of Kallarpur Gurjar village, submitted the complaint accusing SP leader Farhad Alam Gada of conducting lessons using 'politicised alphabets' at a so-called 'PDA Pathshala'. The matter surfaced after a video – allegedly filmed at Gada's residence in Ramnagar – emerged on social media and quickly went viral. The children seen in the video were reportedly pupils from a private school and appeared to be dressed in their school uniforms. Akhilesh Yadav reacts Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav criticised the state government over the FIR. Responding to the incident, the former chief minister wrote on 'X', 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public. He also expressed his plan to establish similar schools throughout the district. 2 SP leaders booked over 'PDA Pathshala', protest against school merger In a separate case, an FIR was filed on Friday against Samajwadi Party leader Rachna Singh Gautam for allegedly holding an unauthorised "PDA Pathshala" outside a government primary school in Shahampur Garhi village, Bilhaur block, Kanpur. Police also booked another SP leader and around a dozen others in Bhadohi for allegedly involving schoolchildren in a protest against the Uttar Pradesh government's plan to merge schools with low enrolment, according to officials. The FIR includes charges of misusing government premises, spreading misinformation, and politicising children. Officials said the "PDA Pathshala" in Bilhaur breached multiple rules, including those under the IT Act and the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Gautam had reportedly conducted similar sessions in other villages too. As per the complaint by the Block Education Officer (BEO), Gautam held the "pathshala" without authorisation from local authorities and went ahead despite objections from the school staff. Children were allegedly taught political slogans and references tied to the SP's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) campaign near the school premises. BEO Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that photos and videos were submitted to the district administration. In the visuals, students can be seen reciting SP-related phrases, while some clips also show allegedly incorrect educational content being taught. Singh added that Gautam herself circulated these on social media.

BJP committed to uplift of denotified tribes, says Andhra party president Madhav
Ahead of the Denotified Tribes Liberation Day to be observed on August 31, the BJP State unit organised a roundtable with key leaders of the nomadic and denotified tribes in Vijayawada. Speaking on the occasion, BJP State president P.V.N. Madhav emphasised the Central government's efforts to recognise and uplift these marginalised communities. He said, 'It is the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre that has made budgetary allocation for the denotified tribes. These communities, once unfairly labeled as criminals by the British in 1957, have long suffered social discrimination and neglect.' In 1952, India had officially liberated these tribes from such stigmatisation. Later, under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's leadership, a commission had been constituted to study and recognise their societal contributions. 'The very first line of the commission's report says that if Indian culture is as rich as it is, it is due to the role of these nomadic communities,' Mr. Madhav observed. Since 2014, the Narendra Modi-led government had initiated steps to restore the identity and dignity of the denotified tribes, he said. 'These tribes also reside in Andhra Pradesh, and the BJP has undertaken studies to understand their challenges, including the lack of voting rights,' he added. 'We believe their struggles stem from systemic exclusion, including disenfranchisement. That's why we're formulating an action plan to safeguard their existence and promote their welfare,' Mr. Madhav added. 'Vajrotsavams' As part of the 75th Liberation Anniversary of these tribes, the BJP plans to conduct 'Vajrotsavams' (diamond jubilee celebrations) across all districts. A month-long series of programmes titled, 'Spurthi', will be organised, culminating in a grand celebration on August 30. MLA Dr. Parthasarathi, former IAS officer Dasari Srinivas Rao, BJP State general secretary B. Shivannarayana, and OBC Morcha State president Rongala Gopi Srinivas, among others, attended.
