Hunter Strickland agrees to minor league deal with Texas Rangers
The Rangers announced Strickland's deal on Wednesday, adding a veteran right-hander to the mix for a bullpen spot.
The 36-year-old has pitched for eight teams during his 10-year big league career, most recently with the Los Angeles Angels last year. He went 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA in a team-leading 72 appearances.
Strickland won a World Series with San Francisco in 2014 and was part of Washington's 2019 World Series run. He has a career record of 25-23 record with a 3.40 ERA and 29 saves in 480 games.

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Más said on Friday that the club disagrees with the decision by MLS to suspend Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba for one game after they both missed the 2025 MLS All-Star Game. 'It's a bad rule, but it's a rule nonetheless," Más told reporters, via Franco Panizo. Both Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, were voted into the All-Star Game but did not take part in any events earlier this week in Austin, Texas. According to ESPN's Lizzy Becherano, league officials and Inter Miami representatives held talks about whether both players would be available for Saturday's game. The league announced on Friday that the two Inter Miami stars would be "unavailable" for the game against FC Cincinnati. The league has enforced this policy before after former LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimović was suspended one game when he missed the 2018 All-Star Game against Serie A side Juventus. 'I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player — or anyone — who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. "I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. 'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision. That said, we're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.' Más said that it was the club's decision to keep Messi and Alba home and he hopes MLS examines the rule in the future. 'I think the punishment for the rule is, frankly, draconian," Más said. "I think the rule needs to be looked at." Messi, Alba upset with suspension When told that they would be unavailable for a key Eastern Conference clash against Cincinnati, Messi and Alba were not happy, according to Más. 'Their reaction was as expected. It was not a positive reaction," Más said. "They want to play and compete and win games. They don't understand the decision. They don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension.' Inter Miami has had a busy schedule, with nine matches between MLS play and the FIFA Club World Cup since June 14. Their previous three league games — two wins and a defeat — took place within seven days. Messi has played 90 minutes in each of Inter Miami's last nine matches. Alba exited Saturday's win over New York Red Bulls in the 84th minute with an injury, but had completed 90 minutes in the Herons' previous five games. Head coach Javier Mascherano said Friday that he hopes the league takes into account needed rest for players in the future. "What I think is that if they want to do this type of event, it's great to do it, and the truth is that it's great for the league," Mascherano said. "There shouldn't be a date in the schedule. It's crazy. We've been playing four of the last five games away. We've been playing four away. We've been playing practically every three days. "Stop for the weekend, the All-Star Game is played on the weekend, and we come back because after Wednesday, today, 48 hours after having played, there are teams that are going to play today, and it's not enough rest for the players either. So, the first thing we have to think about is that football belongs to the players. And if football belongs to the players, without players, it doesn't exist." Más echoed Mascherano's call for the need for player rest, noting that there are six MLS matches on Friday's schedule, two days after the All-Star Game. "That's not right. That's not right to the players," Más said. Inter Miami are 12-4-5 and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 21 games.

Steve Sarkisian makes fun of Colin Cowherd's Nick Saban theories
Now that Nick Saban has announced his intentions about his coaching career, Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd now has to eat his words. Cowherd has been spreading the rumor that he thought the Cleveland Browns were going to pursue Saban for their head coaching position next year and would draft Arch Manning from Texas as their QB. When Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian appeared on 'The Herd,' he couldn't help but take a few jabs at Cowherd's wild theories about Saban. 'You already have him in Cleveland!' Sarkisian said. 'I heard you yesterday, you already have him in Cleveland, he's coaching Arch. I only have Arch for one year? Shoot, I thought I was going to have him for two.' When asked if he thought Saban would eventually return, Sark said he didn't think so. 'I don't know. Hey, he is a great coach and I loved my time working for Nick,' Sarkisian said of Saban returning to coaching. 'I mean, he really is a fantastic coach. I think he feels really comfortable to me. He's really good on TV, I think he enjoys what he gets to do. He's playing a ton of golf, which he loves doing. I'm sure Miss Terry loves having him at home. So I don't know. That's obviously a personal thing as he grows.' Cowherd's theory was based on nothing but his own thoughts about the situation. There was no proof or officials from the Browns telling Cowherd that they even had interest in Saban or Manning. It just looks like Cowherd was throwing theories out there and seeing what would stick, and with all the rumors out there about Saban, this one had to be the wildest and the furthest from the truth. The only thing going in Cowherd's favor is that Saban hasn't completely ruled out returning, but the odds at this point may be slim.

Barry Odom aiming to resurrect Purdue football the same way he made UNLV a winning program
Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) — Purdue coach Barry Odom isn't concerned that the Boilermakers won just one game last season, or that they were in the 2022 Big Ten championship. He certainly isn't bothered that they've been picked to finish last in the 18-team league this season. 'We'll be defined by what we do,' Odom said Thursday, the last of three Big Ten media days. 'If we take the approach from the day that we got the job, every single day our approach is you get up and make Purdue football better and you find a way to consistently instill those habits in everyone around in the organization. Then by the time that the season rolls around, we'll be ready to be the best versions of ourselves.' After turning around one of the worst programs in college football history, Odom spoke with vigor and confidence about resurrecting a Purdue program that went 5-19 the last two seasons. Odom pulled off the unthinkable at UNLV two seasons ago, turning around a program that annually ranked near the bottom of college football in every aspect, and prior to his arrival, was a combined 29-74 the previous nine seasons. In two seasons under Odom, the Rebels made it to the Mountain West championship twice and and were one win away from advancing to the College Football Playoff last season, when they won 11 games for the first time since 1984 and cracked the AP top 25 rankings for the first time in their 46-year history. Now, he has his sights set on the Boilermakers, who ranked near the bottom of nearly every statistical category, including an offense that gained just 299.3 yards per game (127th nationally) and a defense that allowed 452.7 yards per contest (123rd). After a 49-0 season-opening win against Indiana State, the Boilermakers lost their next 11 games — eight by double digits — including the season finale against in-state rival Indiana, 66-0. With an uncertain depth chart entering camp, and a scarce number of returning starters across all three units, Odom's message has at least one of the program's leaders buying in. 'I mean, I feel like it's sort of intrinsic ... especially as big of a turnover that we had, you have a whole new room of guys and basically a new program,' fourth-year running back Devin Mockobee said. "Having that aspect of coming in and having a fresh start, it's easy for everyone to get on board very fast and be able to build a culture very fast.' If there's anyone who can attest to Odom's approach and wherewithal to improve a program, it's defensive back Tony Grimes, who followed his coach from UNLV to West Lafayette, Indiana. 'Hard, smart and tough,' Grimes described Odom during spring practice. 'How he practices, how he makes us work, his schedule, his routine got us built on ... building calluses, meaning every day we're gonna go hard until we can't go no more. 'He took me in out of the portal when honestly no one really wanted me. He gave me that confidence that I needed back and now I am here what I am today.' It's the same confidence and will to get the best out of players that Odom is ready to instill while bringing life back to the Boilermakers. 'From the day that we got the job, every single day, our approach is you get up and you make Purdue football better,' Odom said. 'You find a way to consistently instill those habits in everyone around the organization.
