Beauty influencer, 36, is found dead in hotel swimming pool in Mexico: Police 'not ruling out foul play'
Luz María Barrera Agatón, 36, from Mexico, had been staying with family and friends at the Coco Resort & Villas Hotel in Motul, west of Cancun, when she died on Sunday morning.
The bodybuilder had spent the evening with loved ones around the cenote-style pool before they all made their way to bed at around midnight, leaving her alone on the premises.
Concerned that a number of hours had passed without Ms Agatón's return, the party went searching and shockingly found her body which was plunged at the pool's depths.
Her corpse was quickly removed and paramedics tried to save her, but she was tragically already dead.
Detectives on the case say they have not ruled out the possibility of foul play.
Local reports say Ms Agatón's death came just two weeks after a threatening banner was hung outside her gym in Merida, Yucatán.
She is said to have removed the sign herself and destroyed it without notifying the authorities.
Ms Agatón had suffered similar threats in 2017 when she and her then-partner Chiri Roberto, a former state prosecutor, were threatened.
Her gym was also the scene of a tragic death in 2023 when a barbell fell on top of a young man, reportedly caused by a trainer's carelessness.
Investigators are looking into whether these incidents could be connected to her death.
Ms Agatón was the vice president of the Yucatecan Association of Bodybuilding and Fitness (YAFFEY), whose president Evangelina Cimé Mézquita said on Facebook: 'Sometimes you don't understand why things happen.
'We're going to miss you. your overflowing joy, your simplicity. May God comfort your entire family.'
The YAFFEY account also shared a post which read: 'Sometimes there aren't enough words to express how one feels.
'See you soon my friend. I know there's a party in heaven today.'
'We're going to miss you. your overflowing joy, your simplicity. God comfort your entire family. May God comfort your entire family.'
Ms Agatón owned her gym in Merida and sponsored the Bodybuilding Tournament in Motul.
She was crowned Fitness Champion at the 2017 Mister Mexico bodybuilding contest, and was named queen of the Motul Carnival just last year.

I'm a 29-year-old who spends £600 a month (including £375 on gym memberships) to look this ripped
As a 29-year-old woman, you'd think my biggest outgoings would be clothes, nights out, beauty treatments and my Octopus Energy bill. But those cost a snip compared to the £375.97 I spend on gym memberships each month. I don't get blow-dries or Botox (yet) and I rarely go clubbing. I'm more concerned about looking ripped while maintaining a healthy mind space, and I'm willing to spend a hefty chunk of my salary each year to get it.

Alleged leader of Mexican kidnapping ring released after nearly 20 years in prison
The alleged leader of an infamous Mexican kidnapping ring walked out of a maximum security prison after nearly 20 years Friday, hours after a judge said there wasn't sufficient evidence to support the charges holding him. Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez on Friday rattled off a list of appeals, injunctions and complaints filed over the years of Israel Vallarta's imprisonment in a case that never arrived at a verdict. Vallarta had been charged with organized crime and kidnapping, but a judge tossed those out Thursday. The Attorney General's Office did not immediately respond as to whether it would appeal. Vallarta was arrested in 2005, along with his girlfriend French citizen Florence Cassez. Cassez was eventually convicted and sentenced to 60 years on charges of aiding a kidnapping ring, in a case that soured relations between Paris and Mexico City. She acknowledged living with Vallarta at a ranch where kidnap victims were being held, but professed her innocence, saying she was unaware of their presence. One victim identified her as a kidnapper, but by voice only rather than by sight. A day after Cassez was arrested, police had forced her to take part in a staged raid on the ranch purportedly to rescue hostages and arrest suspects. It was covered by the media and broadcast on television. In January 2013 the Supreme Court overturned Cassez's conviction due to procedural and rights violations. She was released and became a cause celebre in France.
