CALGARY, AB , May 26, 2025 /CNW/ - Bow Valley College unveiled its new 3,560 square foot (331 square metres) Digital Entertainment Nexus Production Hub at its downtown campus, ushering in exciting new opportunities for creative industry production.
Filmmakers and television producers, commercial ventures, athletes, and more can now access the studio equipped with high-level features to create visually stunning effects and elaborate content.
"This Production Hub is a significant investment in the creative and digital industries that will benefit high calibre film and TV productions as well as independent creators. A recent blockbuster production shot just outside our college brought a new level of excitement to our city, and we want to build upon that energy. Our contributions to this ecosystem affirm that Bow Valley College is a catalyst for innovation and growth," said Dr. Misheck Mwaba, President and CEO of Bow Valley College.
Bow Valley College Centre for Entertainment Arts students will also take advantage of the studio, training locally to be on-set and studio ready for production and post-production careers.
The Production Hub will generate revenue for the college and help boost a rapidly growing sector.
"The opening of Bow Valley College's Production Hub marks a milestone for Calgary's creative economy. This state-of-the-art facility equips local talent with Hollywood-grade tools and strengthens our city's reputation as a centre of innovation in film, television, gaming, and digital storytelling. The Digital Entertainment Nexus, including the Production Hub and Calgary's first Esports Arena and Indie Ignition Business Accelerator, is also supported by the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF). In 2023, Bow Valley College received a $5.5 million grant from OCIF.
"The launch of Bow Valley College's Production Hub marks another major step forward in building out Calgary's Digital Entertainment Nexus and cementing our position as a global player in the creative economy. With support from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund, it's unlocking new opportunities for creators, companies, and innovation to thrive right here in Calgary. This is exactly the kind of bold, future-focused investment that fuels economic diversification and reinforces our city as a destination for digital and creative innovation," said Brad Parry, CEO of the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund and President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development.
Production Hub features
The soundstage includes a large wrap-around screen – or volume wall – that allows characters to interact with virtual environments.
Motion capture (mocap) records movements and applies them to a 3D model. Its availability fulfills a need in the local gaming, animation, film and television industries. Sports teams also use mocap to improve player performance. The addition of this technology is thanks – in part – to an Applied Research Tools and Instruments (ARTI) grant.
A post-production/incubation space provides room to develop content, collaborate, and create special effects.
The dailies room is decked out with sound and color calibration tools to review and adjust a project as it is being filmed. We are the only studio in Calgary with an immersive audio sound room, and one of just a few in Canada.

10 best Netflix original movies to watch this summer

For a decade now, Netflix has been making original movies of varying kinds and qualities. Frankly, most of them have been pretty bad. At some point, though, Netflix decided that it wanted to try to win Oscars, which meant that it had to, at least sometimes, make good movies. Not every movie on this list was an Oscar contender, but Netflix has built an impressive library with many original gems. These are 10 of the best Netflix original movies to watch this summer. To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018) Is this the most serious movie on this list? Absolutely not, but Netflix deserves credit for producing a teen rom-com that is something more than just slop. To All the Boys I've Loved Before is, in most ways, an utterly predictable romantic comedy. Recommended Videos It follows a love–obsessed Korean American teen who pretends to date the most popular boy in school, only to find herself falling for him. What's shocking about this movie is how stylish it is, how funny it is, and how utterly winning its two central performances are. It's basically guaranteed to leave you smiling. You can watch To All the Boys I've Loved Before on Netflix. The Irishman (2019) Martin Scorsese's late-period masterpiece, The Irishman, is a gangster movie that reminds us of the horrors of that lifestyle. The story centers on an Irish American who gets involved with the mob and becomes a close associate of Jimmy Hoffa. As he becomes one of the mafia's principal enforcers, he begins taking out every person he once had a relationship with. The lasting images of this movie are of a man utterly alone, recounting the life he lived to people who no longer care who he was or what he did. You can watch The Irishman on Netflix. Da 5 Bloods (2020) One of the best Spike Lee movies of the past decade, Da 5 Bloods tells the story of a group of Black Vietnam veterans who reunite in the present day to get the treasure that they buried in the jungle decades ago. As they move toward the treasure, their disagreements about politics and the world come to the surface, as does all the trauma they experienced during the war. Da 5 Bloods is one part action movie and one part meditation on how Black men have been abused by this country. Plus, it features a career-defining lead performance from Delroy Lindo. You can watch Da 5 Bloods on Netflix. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) This sequel, Knives Out, had a lot to live up to after Netflix gave Rian Johnson hundreds of millions of dollars to make it. Thankfully, Glass Onion didn't disappoint, even as it followed a very different murder mystery that is just as intriguing. The film follows brilliant sleuth Benoit Blanc as he is invited to attend a reunion of old friends after one of them has become fabulously wealthy and used that wealth to elevate the others. When the bodies start to pile up, Blanc must figure out exactly what's going on and who might be responsible. It's just as funny and inventive as the first film and looks even more expensive. You can watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix. The Lost Daughter (2021) Olivia Colman is one of the great actresses of the past decade, and The Lost Daughter features one of her best performances. The film tells the story of a college professor who becomes obsessed with a young woman and her daughter while vacationing in Greece. As we learn more about her difficulties raising her own children, we come to appreciate exactly why this character is motivated in the way that she is. The Lost Daughter is, above all else, a movie about the joys and perils of parenthood, and one that provocatively asks us to examine whether having kids is really worth it after all. You can watch The Lost Daughter on Netflix. Marriage Story (2019) A heartbreaking movie about the loss of love, Marriage Story tells the story of a divorce between two people who love each other but no longer want to be married. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver heartrending performances, but what makes Marriage Story so special is how real it all feels. In a movie where the two people at the center agree to the divorce, things get contentious nonetheless as lawyers get involved, and their son becomes a casualty of their desire to defeat one another. You can watch Marriage Story on Netflix. Mudbound (2017) A harrowing story of life in the South in the early 20th century, Mudbound is told from two dueling perspectives. The film follows two veterans of World War II, one Black and one white, as they return to Mississippi after the war and deal with the poverty and racism that awaits them there. Because of its multiple perspectives, Mudbound highlights the widespread suffering experienced by many, particularly emphasizing how Black individuals often faced the harshest consequences. It's not an easy movie to watch, but if you can sit through it, it's deeply rewarding. You can watch Mudbound on Netflix. The Power of the Dog (2021) One of the best thrillers Netflix has ever produced, The Power of the Dog tells the story of a rancher living in the 1920s who lives with his brother. When his brother chooses to marry a widow and brings her and her son into their home, he disrupts the carefully structured lives they have maintained. As the young boy gets closer to the reclusive, curmudgeonly rancher who has been antagonizing his mother, he comes to realize that there are things about himself that he's hiding from the world. Surprising, unsettling, and moving, The Power of the Dog is not what you might expect. It's even better. You can watch The Power of the Dog on Netflix. Okja (2017) Anyone who has seen Parasite is likely aware that Bong Joon-ho is not a subtle filmmaker, and Okja is definitely not a subtle film. The movie follows a young girl and her genetically engineered superpig, Okja, after they are separated by a corporation that wants to capture creatures like the pig and create exceptionally tasty meat. As this young girl tries to rescue her closest friend, she meets animal rights activists, butty doctors, and other superpigs that need her help. It's a movie about the evils of the meat industry, and it's certainly not subtle. But man, does Okja rule. You can watch Okja on Netflix. Private Life (2018) A heartbreaking movie about two people who are trying to navigate the world of infertility and adoption, Private Life is small, quiet, and heartbreaking. Anchored by two incredible performances from Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn, this movie is really about two people who are trying to make their marriage work, even as they deal with what often seem like impossible circumstances of trying to have a child. In particular, Hahn is incredible as a woman who worries that she's missed her chance and wants to change the circumstances of her life. You can watch Private Life on Netflix.

Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid's Relationship Status Might Change 'In the Next Couple of Months'

Wedding bells might be ringing sooner for Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid. The "American Sniper" actor is reportedly gearing up to pop the big question soon, as he and the model become even more serious about starting their own blended family. The move comes months after Hadid was seen enjoying a stroll with Cooper's daughter, giving fans a glimpse into her future as a stepmother. Bradley Cooper And Gigi Hadid Want A Family Of Their Own Insiders claim Cooper and Hadid are on the same page about having a child together despite each having daughters from separate relationships. The "Maestro" actor shares a 7-year-old daughter, Lea De Seine, with his former partner, model Irina Shayk, while Hadid co-parents her 5-year-old daughter, Khai, with her ex-boyfriend, Zayn Malik. Cooper is "considering marriage and kids with Gigi," the source alleged. With their children around the same age and both families already blending, walking down the aisle seems like a natural next step. "He might pop the question in the next couple of months," the informant told Page Six. Gigi Hadid And Bradley Cooper Are In A 'Bubble' Despite a 20-year age gap, Hadid and Cooper have continued to grow stronger as a couple since they debuted their romance in October 2023. Their close bond even reflects in their children's relationship, as sources claim the kids spend time together and have playdates. As a result, Hadid and Cooper are keen on bringing an additional child or children into the mix. "They could picture a blended family with their daughters and their own kids," the informant noted. Luckily, the lovebirds' relationship is strong enough to withstand the adjustments that come with having more children, if that happens. Cooper and Hadid are "incredibly happy and are in their own bubble," added the source. Gigi Hadid Earns Praises For Future Stepmother Role Reports of impending wedding bells come almost a month after Hadid was spotted in New York City enjoying an affectionate stroll with Cooper's daughter, Lea. As The Blast reported, the model and Lea were photographed strolling leisurely in the Big Apple while sharing a keen conversation. The 30-year-old dressed casual for the outing in a white top, cardigan, and high-waisted jeans paired with Vans sneakers. Hadid accessorized with a tote bag, simple jewelry, and sunglasses. Cooper's daughter proudly represented her father, wearing a Metallica top that honors her dad's favorite band. The seven-year-old finished off her look with a floral-patterned skirt and grey sneakers. Although the "Silver Linings Playbook" actor was absent during the stroll, Lea looked super comfortable hanging with the model. The 'Ocean's 8' Star Is A Mother Figure To Bradley Cooper's Daughter The NYC outing got tongues wagging, with fans praising how easily the model integrated herself into Cooper's world. A source shared insight on Lea and Hadid's bond, saying the IMG model treats Lea "as if she were her own" and in return the preschooler "sees Gigi as a mother figure in return." Although Shayk remains in the picture, the Russian model reportedly approves of the relationship. Luckily, Cooper shared a similar bond with his girlfriend's daughter, Khai, and has the stamp of approval from Malik. "Lea has also become like a big sister to Khai, and the two girls share a strong relationship," the informant noted. "Khai has grown up with Bradley and Lea as a regular part of her life, and she sees Bradley as a father figure - something Zayn supports as well." Gigi Hadid's Family Gives Bradley Cooper Romance The Green Light Fans aren't the only ones excited about Cooper and Hadid's pairing, as the model's family is also very much on board. The Blast previously reported that a source told People Magazine that the Hadid family is extremely supportive due to how happy their daughter appears with the award-winning Hollywood star. "Gigi's family is so happy for her, and they absolutely adore Bradley. He is such a gentleman, and he blends so seamlessly into their family," the insider explained. "Gigi and Bradley have a lot in common, and his daughter, Lea, is so sweet and gentle with Khai." The source continued, "Bradley is different from any of Gigi's past relationships, and they've never seen her this happy with a partner before." Solve the daily Crossword

Hollywood's Hottest Starlet Is Using Her Beauty To Manipulate Stock Prices

Sydney Sweeney is well on her way to becoming a bona fide A-list star in Hollywood, but now she's become a Wall Street star too. She's changing stock prices by putting on a pair of jeans. This week, the clothing brand American Eagle unveiled a series of ads featuring Sweeney in alluring poses. The ads are simple, and they do nothing except fully embrace Sweeney's natural visual appeal to sell their products. This would have been nothing ten years ago, but now it's revolutionary. In response, American Eagle's stock prices have risen dramatically as investors predict a spike in sales. It'll probably happen because these kinds of advertising tactics work—they always have. To understand why this is a big deal, you'd need to have noticed the big changes happening in the advertising world. Modern ads have become more about conveying the right messaging than making the product you're selling look appealing. That's resulted in the disappearance of more traditional approaches to product selling, like the once coveted position of 'Guess Jeans Girl.' Instead, big companies have focused on ads that espouse social agendas and embrace what they perceive to be current political trends. Usually, this is done to their detriment. There's no evidence that social messaging ads have ever worked. However, politically motivated financial forces have made conforming to new models of ineffective and unappealing advertising the standard. Thanks to threats from activists and banks pushing ESG, companies have been too afraid to step outside it, even if doing so might help sell more products. If you're looking for recent examples, look at the car company Jaguar, which is imploding. They recently abandoned their timeless image, designed to convey power and sophistication, in favor of pink cars for, well, I'm not sure who they're for. Robot aliens? That's my best guess. Jaguar's marketing moves have been a clear disaster. It was obvious from the outset that this marketing campaign would destroy their company, but they did it anyway. As a result, they're no longer selling cars at all. Their sales are nothing, and they're basically done as a car brand. Enter Sydney Sweeney, who made her fame largely on a willingness to be traditionally feminine and attractive. This attitude is now so unusual that her public profile has exploded, and she's become the ideal pitch woman for any brand willing to risk the wrath of ESG overlords and choose profit over ideology. Given how the market has reacted, it seems Wall Street is ready to go back to profit over pandering, too. American Eagle isn't the first to jump on the Sydney Sweeney happy to be gorgeous bandwagon, but they are the biggest. Given the success they're seeing for doing it, American Eagle won't be the last.
