Eight-word taunt that Harley Reid said to Jason Horne-Francis comes to light

Yahoo14-07-2025
The eight-word taunt that Harley Reid uttered to Jason Horne-Francis has been revealed, after a fiery clash between the former No.1 draft picks on Sunday night. Reid and Horne-Francis came chest-to-chest during Port's 12.15 (87) to 9.6 (61) victory at Adelaide Oval, and could be seen exchanging words.
Speaking on Channel 9 program 'Footy Furnace' on Sunday night, leading reporter Tom Morris revealed what was said. "They are two of the most fiery people in the game, and they were going at each other," Morris said.
The journo revealed Reid told Horne-Francis: "Go back to mummy. Leave after one year." Morris added: "Horne-Francis left North Melbourne after one year. You love that sort of stuff don't you?"
As Morris mentioned, Horne-Francis was drafted by the Kangaroos in 2021 before requesting a trade back to South Australia after just one season. Reid is in a similar boat in that many believe he might look to head home to Victoria once his contract with the Eagles expires.
Speaking on 'Footy Furnace', Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel said Reid's sledge backfired in that it only fired up Horne-Francis and the Power players. "They're incredibly competitive customers like most people," Bartel said. "But once the byplay was happening he (Horne-Francis) kicked two goals from stoppages, and it actually helped Port Adelaide get up and over West Coast."
Commentator Anthony Hudson said during the game: 'It's sort of like they're looking in the mirror a little bit." While Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton added: 'You've got the feeling they're going to be at each other for the next decade.'
Horne-Francis responded after the game, but was quick to play down the incident. 'I think there was a bit of heat in it at the end there, which was, I guess, I like a little bit, and I know a few of their players like (it) as well,' he said. 'I think it's all part of the game, it's all in good spirit, but it was good to get over the line in the end.'

In the end it was Zak Butters who inspired fast-finishing Port Adelaide to a comeback 26-point win over a plucky West Coast. The Power trailed by 33 points in the opening quarter before rallying to an important victory.
Butters was brilliant, racking up 38 disposals and 14 in the first term, as Port booted the last five goals of the game. West Coast produced their highest-scoring quarter under first-year coach Andrew McQualter, booting 6.3 to 2.2 in the opening term.
"I was really proud of the effort for a large part of the game (in a) challenging 24 hours for our footy club," McQualter said. "We competed really well. In the end, the Power's class was just able to shine through."

West Coast's 25-point lead at quarter-time saw Power coach Ken Hinkley hit his players with some stern words. "They (the Eagles) got away to a good jump and we just left ourselves in vulnerable positions," Hinkley said. "And our skills didn't match those vulnerable positions, and when you play footy like that, you're going to get hurt on the scoreboard."

Phillies sign first-round pick Gage Wood, Arkansas pitcher who threw CWS no-hitter

The Phillies signed first-round draft pick Gage Wood, the club announced Tuesday. Selected 26th overall in the 2025 MLB Draft, the Arkansas pitcher is best-known for throwing a no-hitter against Murray State in the 2025 College World Series — the event's third-ever no-hitter and first in more than 60 years. He had a perfect game until the eighth, when he hit a batter in the foot. 'I think about it almost every day,' Wood said of the HBP at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday. The right-handed pitcher throws a fastball that reaches 98 mph, sitting at 95-96 mph. The pitch drew the highest whiff rate of any fastball in Division I baseball this season. His curveball sits around 83-85 mph. He also throws a cutter and splitter, which the Phillies envision him using in a starter's four-pitch mix. In 10 starts in 2025, Wood went 4-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 37 2/3 innings. He struck out 69 and walked seven. Advertisement Wood was injured for nearly two months of the NCAA season with a shoulder impingement before returning in mid-April. The Phillies were not concerned by the injury as they scouted him. Wood arrived at Citizens Bank Park a few days before Philadelphia announced the signing, catching some Phillies games — including Kyle Schwarber's grand slam on Saturday. 'I've been showing (the video) to all my friends, that this place was going bonkers,' Wood said. Next for Wood: reporting to Florida, where he will 'work as hard as I can to perform the best that I can.'

Nets' Ben Saraf, Danny Wolf bring new wave of Jewish talent to NBA

The Nets made history this summer, becoming the first NBA team to select five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, including two Jewish players in Ben Saraf and Danny Wolf, the first such duo selected in the same draft since 2006. Brooklyn drafted Saraf and Wolf with consecutive picks at Nos. 26 and 27, instantly doubling the league's Jewish player count from two to four, joining Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija and Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis. Amari Bailey, who played for the G League Long Island Nets last season, also identifies as Jewish. 'To be honest, it's fantastic, the way it just worked out,' Nets general manager Sean Marks said. 'If you think about it, the game of basketball is such a worldly game, played all over the globe… What I will say is, there's talent everywhere, and that's our job, to bring in the best talent regardless of race, ethnicity and so forth.' In 2023, the UJA-Federation of New York reported approximately 1.4 million Jews in the New York area. Brooklyn, the most crowded Jewish borough with about one-third of this population, now features two prominent ambassadors in Saraf and Wolf. Jacob Gurvis of Jewish Community Voice reports that Saraf, the son of two former Israeli professional basketball players, wears No. 77, symbolizing the Hebrew word 'mazal', which means luck. Wolf gained Israeli citizenship to compete for Israel at the FIBA U20 European Championship in Greece. 'It's definitely going to be unique having them both here and we're excited about that,' Marks said. 'I know the borough is excited about that. I know the Jewish community here is very excited about that, too.' Saraf, the third point guard selected by the Nets on draft night, averaged 11.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals in 42 games for Ratiopharm Ulm last season. In 2023-24, he played for Elitzur Kiryat Ata in the Israeli Basketball Premier League, earning the league's top young prospect award. He was also named MVP of the FIBA U18 EuroBasket 2024, leading the tournament with 28.1 points per game. The 19-year-old believes his overseas professional experience will set him apart in Brooklyn. 'I've been playing pro for three years now, so I've played a lot of games so far,' Saraf said. 'I think it's going to be helpful knowing how to manage your body, to really stick to your routines and be willing to compete every night so things can translate the right away for the NBA.' Wolf, the Nets' only non-guard pick in 2025, averaged 13.2 points, 3.6 assists and 1.4 blocks per game at Michigan last season, leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten Tournament title and a Sweet 16 appearance. Previously, he earned All-Ivy League honors at Yale over two seasons. The 21-year-old also helped Israel secure a silver medal at the 2023 FIBA U20 European Championship in Greece, where he practiced with Saraf. 'I think just the jump I made from Yale to Michigan and now — obviously the NBA is a different animal and going to have to keep working on a lot of different things, but I think there's just a lot of different things I can do on a basketball court,' Wolf said. 'Whatever coach Jordi and the staff want me to do, I'm going to do to the best of my ability, while still working and developing to become that kind of player.' Beyond their Jewish heritage and tireless work ethic, positional versatility connects Saraf, Wolf and Brooklyn's 2025 draft class. Marks credits David Blatt, a former NBA head coach and Israeli American basketball executive, for aiding in identifying Saraf and Wolf during the draft process. 'I think words of wisdom are always important,' Marks said. 'I have a lot of respect for Coach Blatt, as a person, as a coach. And when we do our due diligence, you want to watch the players themselves, but also you need to know all the things that you didn't know. And everything was very positive coming from coach Blatt. He really liked these two guys, and he knew them pretty well. So, he really helped us and finally we were lucky enough to get them both here.' Now teammates in Brooklyn, Saraf and Wolf have the opportunity to represent Israel on basketball's biggest stage. Though both are considered developmental projects — Saraf must improve his outside shooting, and Wolf needs to clean up turnover issues — their future looks promising. On a rebuilding Nets team, they could make an immediate impact. 'I think I really enjoyed watching Ben overseas,' Marks said. 'We went over to watch him live a couple of times, so it was great to watch how hard he competes. I think that was something that really stood out, passing ability, pride on defense. I think he's playing at a high level over there. 'Danny, I think we already sort of talked a little about the high IQ and a skill set that's very unique for a person his size. So, to see him out there, other teams continue trying to figure out, well, how do we stop him? Who do we guard him with? What system do we put around him? And that's a unique problem to have, right? How do we use both of those young men to the best of their abilities and watch them grow and so forth.'

Three Predictions: Clemson, Illinois, Michigan

Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith has three predictions on Clemson landing a four-star offensive lineman, Illinois missing out on a top in-state target and Michigan's success in this year's NFL Draft. MORE: Ten programs that could sign the top 2026 class Advertisement CLASS OF 2025 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker 1. FOUR-STAR OT ADAM GUTHRIE COMMITS TO CLEMSON It's a great year for offensive tackles in the state of Ohio. Adam Guthrie, Maxwell Riley, Sam Greer and Ben Congdon are all sure-fire Power Four prospects. But not everyone can end up at Ohio State. Guthrie does have official visits set to Ohio State, Clemson and Penn State this summer but I've got the Tigers with a commanding lead right now. Advertisement The Tigers have always pursued Guthrie hard which matters quite a bit in this recruitment. The relationship between the Ohio four-star and offensive line coach Matt Luke is strong. Plus, the shakeup on the offensive staff in Columbus does set them back a bit here. Even if Justin Frye hadn't bolted for the NFL, I would still have Clemson as the leader here though. Things can change quickly in recruiting but I'm firing in a FutureCast for Guthrie to end up a Tiger. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH CLEMSON FANS AT 2. MACK SUTTER LEAVES ILLINOIS FOR COLLEGE. Four-star tight end Mack Sutter released a top five over the weekend of Illinois, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Alabama and Penn State. There is a lot to like about each of those programs for Sutter. Ole Miss has a fun offense with coach Lane Kiffin. Ohio State just won the national championship and will compete for it every year. Alabama runs a great offense and wins at a high level. Penn State just had the best tight end in the country with Tyler Warren. Advertisement But in-state Illinois has always played a prominent role in his recruitment. The Illini have been hot on the recruiting trail, too. However, I'm predicting that Sutter does not pick the Illini and instead joins one of the other powerhouse programs that he has to choose from. 3. THREE MICHIGAN DEFENDERS LAND IN THE FIRST ROUND © Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images There was so much talk late in the cycle about the Wolverines' surge up the recruiting rankings. That was of course in part to flipping in-state five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. But quietly the Wolverines put together another good defensive class from top to bottom. The level the team is recruiting at on defense could get a boost soon. Advertisement Defensive tackle Mason Graham, cornerback Will Johnson and defensive tackle Kenneth Grant all look like locks for the first round right now. Graham could even be a top-10 pick. If it unfolds this way for Michigan, expect another big bump in recruiting. This time on the defensive side of the ball, where they are already recruiting well. Michigan's momentum as a program isn't slowing down anytime soon. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MICHIGAN FANS AT
