Major study proves exercise improves cancer survival

BBC News02-06-2025
An exercise programme for colon cancer patients can cut the risk of dying by a third, a major international trial shows. The researchers said it was "not a large amount" of exercise and any type of workout from swimming to salsa classes counted. The results could change the way colon cancer is treated around the world.Scientists are already investigating whether similar exercise regimes could improve survival for people with other diseases, such as breast cancer.
"It's a bit of a mind-shift, thinking of treatment as something you do, not just something you take," says researcher Prof Vicky Coyle from Queen's University Belfast. In the trial, the three-year exercise programme started soon after chemotherapy. The aim was to get people doing at least double the amount of exercise set out in the guidelines for the general population. That could be three-to-four sessions of brisk walking a week, lasting 45-60 minutes, Prof Coyle says.People got weekly face-to-face coaching sessions for the first six months, which then dropped to once a month. The trial, involving 889 patients, put half on the exercise programme. The other half were given leaflets promoting a healthy lifestyle. The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed after five years:80% of people exercising remained cancer-freecompared with 74% in the other groupmeaning a 28% reduction in the risk of the cancer coming back, or a new one formingMeanwhile, eight years after the initial cancer treatment:10% of people on the exercise programme diedcompared with 17% in the group given only health advicemarking a 37% lower risk of deathExactly why exercise has this beneficial effect is unknown, but ideas include the impact on growth hormones, inflammation levels in the body and how the immune system functions - which patrols the body for cancer.Dr Joe Henson, from the University of Leicester, said the results were "exciting".He added: "I saw first-hand that this reduced fatigue, lifted people's mood and boosted their physical strength."We know that physical activity regulates several key biological processes that could explain these results, and further research will help us uncover why exercise is having such a positive impact."Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with around 31,800 people diagnosed each year.Caroline Geraghty, from Cancer Research UK, said: "This trial has the potential to transform clinical practice, but only if health services have the necessary funding and staff to make it a reality for patients."

Venice locals win bid to convert abandoned island into sanctuary

A small island near Venice once used as a plague pit is set to become a public park for the city's residents. Part of Poveglia, an island south of the Italian city, has been deserted and closed to visitors for decades, its dilapidated hospital buildings frozen in time, its imposing fort now abandoned and its rumored mass graves still hidden. Its grisly past covers both the countless unknown plague victims thought to have died on the island and the lobotomies reputed to have occurred there when the hospital served as a mental asylum in the 1920s. In 2014 the Italian government sold the island for £400,000 as part of an Italian government strategy to sell off unused property to address its budget crisis. But a group of Venetians launched a campaign to protect the island from commercial development, calling themselves 'Poveglia For Everyone' (PFE). Following a protracted battle, PFE won control over the island. The activist group won a six-year lease, beginning next month, beating competitors including Venice's mayor Luigi Brugnaro. The grassroots group asked Venetians to donate money to help preserve the island from development and turn it into an oasis for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the tourist-laden city. Patrizia Veclani, one of the founders of Poveglia for Everyone, told the Times: 'We woke up with a nest egg of €460,000 (£400,887) and a community full of high-level professional skills.' Her group will pay little more than €1,000 (£871) a year for the renewable lease. PFE says it is joining forces with the University of Verona to transform the northern part of the island 'into a lagoon urban park open to citizens and respectful of the ecosystem and the landscape elements that characterise the lagoon.' The group faces an uphill battle to regenerate the island, however, as there is currently no water or electricity, nor is there a proper pier. Earlier this year, furious Neapolitan locals attempted to crowdfund the purchasing 'back' of a tiny island in the shadows of Mount Vesuvius after it was listed for sale at over £8million. The island of Punta Pennata, which spans an area of just 70x500 metres, lays a mere 100 meters offshore the town of Bacoli in the Gulf of Naples. Despite being a favorite fishing retreat of locals for decades, the rocky peninsula was put up for sale by luxury auctioneers Sotheby's. Residents and officials from neighboring towns are not simply accepting the island's sale though, with Bacoli mayor Josi Della Rangione leading the campaign to place Punta Pennata under the stewardship of the local community. Italy as a nation has already dealt with vast levels of overtourism and a plethora of foreign tycoons buying up similarly prime real estate from under local's noses. In a bid to stop Punta Pennata from falling into the hands of another exorbitantly wealthy businessperson or celebrity, Mr Della Regione drummed up support from all over Italy in the hopes that the local community can raise enough funds to 'buy back' the island.

Brooks Nader suffers very racy wardrobe malfunction in skimpy dress as she parties in Saint-Tropez

Brooks Nader commanded attention when she was spotted stepping out in Saint-Tropez for a night on the town this weekend. The 28-year-old supermodel has been basking in the delights of Europe this summer, including taking a viral trip to Wimbledon. Now she has made her way down to the South of France, where she was glimpsed heading towards the upscale club VIP Room by the waterfront. She was decked out in a peekaboo black gown that was perfectly fitted to highlight her enviably svelte frame as she pounded the pavement en route to the venue. Sharpening her unmistakable features with makeup, she let her caramel-colored locks cascade freely over her shoulders in luscious waves. Her outfit was so revealingly cut that she briefly suffered a wardrobe malfunction on the street, as one of the slender straps covering her bust drifted off to one side. Brooks' latest blunder comes after she demonstrated her healthy sense of humor about herself while addressing an outfit mishap at Wimbledon. The sizzling sensation stuck to the themes of summertime and tennis, slipping into a white skirt for the world-famous tournament. But while she was in public, her period started and she bled through the fabric, with stains visible along the back of the skirt. She laughed off the snafu on TikTok, posting a video of herself getting confidently up from a table only for her sisters to start cringing at her. At that point Brooks turned around and the shot ran down the length of her outfit, so that the stains were in clear view on camera. The Baton Rouge-born clotheshorse poked fun at herself the in text over the video as well, writing: 'tries to be chic,' and then: 'Starts [blood emoji] at Wimbledon.' Fans leapt into the comments to praise her for being 'real' and 'NORMALIZING it,' with one writing: 'A canon event for all us girlies.' 'The one time you wear something non sheer and maxi,' joked one commenter with crying, praying and heart emoji - earning a like from Brooks. Brooks waved off the mishap and sat cheerfully in the audience at Wimbledon that day, with her sister Sarah Jane right beside her. She had another wardrobe malfunction in April at the Fashion Los Angeles Awards, where her structured dress drifted forward at one point and exposed her left nipple. Her latest outing comes three months after confirmed she has once again split from Dancing With The Stars pro Gleb Savchenko, 41. Brooks and Gleb started dating while competing as a team on Dancing With The Stars last autumn, triggering allegations they were engaged in a 'showmance.' They briefly broke up late last year but rekindled their romance, until it emerged in early April that Brooks had decided to leave him. Brooks' sister Grace has accused Gleb of being unfaithful, which he staunchly denied, insisting he is 'not a cheater' or a 'f***boy,' via E! News. Gleb was previously married to Russian artist Elena Samodanova for 14 years until she filed for divorce near the end of 2020. Their acrimonious split played out in the headlines, with Elena accusing Gleb of repeated infidelity and Gleb denying her allegations. Meanwhile, Brooks was seen chatting with Tom Brady at Michael Rubin's star-studded Fourth Of July party in 2024, setting off an avalanche of dating rumors. The sighting came days after she shared a kiss with Prince Constantine Alexios of Greece and Denmark in the functions leading up to Olivia Culpo's wedding. Brooks separated from her husband Billy Haire in May 2024 after four years of marriage, with a source informing the split was amicable. Billy, who tied the knot with Brooks in December 2019, works as a vice president at The Arena Group, which published Sports Illustrated until earlier this year. Brooks first rose to fame by winning the Sports Illustrated Swim Search in 2019, and last year she was featured on the cover of the Swimsuit Issue. She and her sisters Mary, Grace and Sara are now all starring together on a reality show called Love Thy Nader, slated to bow on Hulu and Freeform this summer.
