Problem of plenty gives Muzumdar a good headache
India head into the ODI series against England with confidence, having recently secured a 3-2 series win over them. This ODI series carries added significance as it serves as key preparation for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, which India will host later this year. With several players delivering standout performances, competition for spots in the World Cup squad is heating up. "So I think there's a lot of depth in this Indian line-up, a good headache to have as a coaching staff.' said Muzumdar. One of the biggest selection calls before Muzumdar is picking Smriti Mandhana's opening partner. Pratika Rawal currently leads the race in the ODI format, having impressed since her debut against West Indies last December. In 11 ODIs, she boasts an outstanding average of 63.80 with five centuries to her name. Meanwhile, Shafali Verma made a strong return to the T20I side during the England tour after being dropped following India's early exit from the T20 World Cup last October. She scored 176 runs at an average of 35.20 and an explosive strike rate of 158.55. Despite not being included in the ODI squad for the England series, Muzumdar stated that Shafali remained in the scheme of things for the ODI format as well. The Women's Cricket World Cup is back in India | WWC25 The Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 will be played in India later this year. "Pratika Rawal, she was drafted in the month of December, so it's almost six months, but she has left a big mark in her initial stage in her international career. 'And Shafali has been a terrific player. There's no doubt about it that she will be in the mix. She will be amongst the core group of India. There's no doubt in my mind about it. But at the moment, Pratika has joined the squad probably four or five days prior to the ODI. The depth is stronger, it's getting stronger." Another youngster to shine in the series was Shree Charani, who was named Player of the Series for the T20I leg after claiming 10 wickets. Muzumdar credited the WPL for unearthing such promising talent. WT20WC: The extraordinary Shafali Verma "She's been a find of the WPL. From the WPL, we identified her and then I think her progress has been fantastic, she's been phenomenal in this series. We were searching for a left-arm spinner and she fitted the bill perfectly." While ODI World Cup might be the immediate concern, India also have their sights set on the next ICC Women's T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in England next year. "We had that in our mind when we came back from Sri Lanka and we started our preparation for this tour. We were on the same page, all of us, including the selectors, thinking that there's a World Cup in 2026, same place, in England, so we've picked the squad accordingly.' said Muzumdar. Muzumdar believed India's England outing this year will hold them in good stead for the T20 World Cup. 'We've started on a good note, I guess, winning the T20 series here against England 3-2, that too the first time ever. So it's a pleasing result. The preparation has already started.'

Italy join Spain in Women's Euro quarter-finals, Belgium edge past Portugal
Italy reached the quarter-finals of Women's Euro 2025 on Friday despite losing 3-1 to Group B winners Spain, the Azzurre finishing ahead of rivals Portugal whose tournament ended with a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Belgium. Athenea, Patri Guijarro and Esther Gonzalez scored the goals in Bern for Spain who finished the group stage on a perfect nine points, five ahead of second-placed Italy who will face Norway in the last eight on Wednesday. 'We had one key objective and that was to get through,' said Andrea Soncin who has taken Italy to the last eight of the women's Euros for the first time since 2013. 'We can still develop and there is a gap between us and Spain, but you saw that with good organisation we can compete. Spain players celebrate. AP 'Obviously they have really great players who regardless of how organised you are can mess everything up for you, but we're very happy to have qualified.' Spain meanwhile will take on hosts Switzerland in a week's time as they aim to follow up their World Cup win with a first-ever Euros triumph. Montse Tome's team scored 14 times in three group matches, just four fewer goals they scored in Australia and New Zealand two years ago. 'We will make the most of the time, adapt so that the players have time to rest physically and mentally, and also have some fun,' said Tome. 'I hope we manage to keep doing what we are doing because we won three games from three, and it's the first time Spain have done this.' Italy, who took the lead through Elisabetta Oliviero in the 10th minute, ended the group stage one point ahead of third-placed Belgium who snatched a last-gasp win in Sion through Janice Cayman. Italy's defender #02 Elisabetta Oliviero celebrates after scoring the opening goal during the match between Italy and Spain at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, on Friday. AFP Belgium were already eliminated before kick-off and only Portugal had a chance of overtaking Italy heading into the final round of Group B fixtures. But Soncin's Italy started the game knowing that a defeat would have likely been enough for a spot in the quarters even if Portugal beat Belgium due to the significant goal difference gap between the two teams. Three points separated Italy and Portugal at kick-off and Italian fans were able to relax when Tessa Wullaert stuck out her left leg to guide home Jill Janssens' low cross and put Belgium ahead in the third minute. Shortly afterwards Elena Linari thumped a header against the crossbar from Manuela Giugliano's corner, and then Oliviero gave Italy a shock lead by pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area after some poor defending from Spain. Portugal's forward #23 Telma Encarnacao celebrates after scoring a goal during the match between Portugal and Belgium at the Stade de Tourbillon in Sion on Friday. AFP But Spain soon began to assert their dominance and four minutes later Athenea brought them level with a wonderful goal, dribbling towards the edge of the area before exchanging passes with Alexia Putellas and curling home a superb finish. The Spanish continued to have the lion's share of possession but Italy were dangerous on the break, with Martina Piemonte, up front in place of Cristiana Girelli, shanked wide when clean through on goal. And Barbara Bonansea headed over Sofia Cantore's cross two minutes before the break as Italy pushed ot retake the lead. But Spain were deservedly in front three minutes after the break through Patri whose sliced first-time finish crept past Italy goalkeeper Laura Giulinani. Spain poured forward and added a third in stoppage time through Esther Gonzalez. But it mattered little by that point as even though Telma Encarnacao levelled late for Portugal, Cayman lashed home a loose ball in the 96th minute to give Belgium a thrilling win after they had two goals chalked off by VAR. Italy's players jumped and hugged once Belgium's success was confirmed, before basking in the applause of their travelling support. Agence France-Presse

PSG coach Enrique warns on complacency in Club WC final
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique on Friday urged his team to round off the best season in the club's history by winning the Club World Cup, but warned not to expect Sunday's final against Chelsea to be a 'simple formality'. 'This is absolutely not going to be a simple formality,' the Spanish coach insisted, refusing to accept that PSG are necessarily overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy at MetLife Stadium despite their fearsome form. 'I have analysed Chelsea. They have a great squad. Enzo Maresca is doing a great job and I really like what he is doing,' Luis Enrique said. 'They are a very complete team.' PSG can complete a remarkable clean sweep of trophies with victory, having won a French league and cup double before claiming the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history at the end of May. 'We want to finish this historic season in the best possible way,' said the former Barcelona coach. 'Now we must open the next chapter, win more major trophies. We want to make more history by winning on Sunday.' PSG were spellbinding at times in their 4-0 victory against Real Madrid in the semi-finals and also put four goals past Atletico Madrid and Lionel Messi's Inter Miami during the competition. 'But we have to win this game to round things off. However, in a final there is always a winner and a loser, and that doesn't mean the loser has necessarily done anything wrong,' Luis Enrique added. 'We will lose again at some point, because that is what happens in top-level football, but I think the path is clear for everyone.' This is the first edition of the 32-team Club World Cup, and whoever wins on Sunday will be world champions for four years, with the next tournament scheduled to take place in 2029. 'We are aware of the importance of this match, that it is a golden opportunity to be in a World Cup final,' said captain Marquinhos. 'This only happens every four years, and we don't know where we will be in four years.' Chelsea coach Maresca admitted that Club World Cup final opponents PSG are the best team in the world right now but is hopeful that his side can finish off a successful season by winning the first edition of FIFA's expanded competition. 'For sure they are a top team in Europe and probably in this moment the best team in the world,' Maresca told reporters at the MetLife Stadium, where Sunday's final will take place. 'But I think every game can be different. We have maximum respect for them. I really enjoy watching them but at the same time we are here to do our best and try to win the final.' Chelsea have eliminated Benfica as well as Brazilian duo Palmeiras and Fluminense in the knockout rounds to reach the final at the end of a marathon campaign. Maresca, who arrived from Leicester City last year, has already led the Stamford Bridge side to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League which brings with it qualification for next season's Champions League. In addition to that they won the UEFA Conference League, and now they have a chance to win more silverware -- even if they are not the favourites against European champions PSG. 'It has been a great season, and for me the biggest achievement of this season is that exactly one year ago nobody was talking about Chelsea to do with football -- it was all about having a big squad and big money, that kind of thing,' Maresca said. 'Now nobody is talking about this -- everyone is talking about Chelsea, the way we play, the way we win games, and this personally is the biggest achievement.' The Italian added that he was optimistic pivotal midfielder Moises Caicedo would be fit for the final after coming off with an ankle injury just before the end of the semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday. However, Noni Madueke will not feature in the final as he stood on the verge of completing a move to Arsenal on Friday evening. 'Noni is in contact with a new club. I guess that he is going to leave in the next hours,' said Maresca. 'If players want to leave, in the end it is difficult for the club and for the manager. 'No-one said to Noni he had to leave. Noni decided to leave and if he is happy, we are happy.' Agence France-Presse
