Pittsburg pole vaulter Khaliq Muhammad among athletes to watch at NCS Meet of Champions

There's only one state leader among the competitors heading into the two-day North Coast Section Meet of Champions at Dublin High School.
Pittsburg senior Khaliq Muhammad leads all Californians in the pole vault with a mark of 17 feet, 2 inches, one inch better than University City-San Diego senior Kai Anderson. Muhammad, who finished second at state last year to Anderson, has cleared 17-2 twice, the last time at the Bay Valley Athletic League championships on May 7.
Last week he broke the NCS Tri-Valley championship meet record at 17-0½, and Friday he'd love to challenge the NCS MOC record of 17-8½ set in 1987 by Acalanes-Lafayette's Brent Burns.
Field event finals Saturday start at 2 p.m., and the first races begin at 4:30 p.m.
The top three finishers and qualifying marks advance to next week's state meet at Buchanan High School in Clovis (Fresno County).
'Khaliq's competitive attitude is off the charts,' said Pittsburg's 17th-year head coach Aaron Alatorre. 'He never shies away from the moment and does whatever it takes to improve himself.'
His sister Jathiyah Muhammad won the state pole vault last season (13-9) and is now competing for the University of Arizona. Their father, Gary, is a first-year coach for the Pirates but has coached the sport for years, most notably at James Logan-Union City.
To improve his marks this season, Khaliq has worked on his speed and run the 100, 200 and 400 meters and 300 hurdles, improving all marks considerably throughout the season. His best times are 11.66 (100), 24.19 (200), 55.36 (400) and 43.31 (300 hurdles). Few, if any pole vaulters, would make such a physically taxing sacrifice to improve at his true craft.
Heading into Friday, he's bettered his 16-4 mark from the 2024 state meet 10 times and gone at least 17-0 five times in competition.
'He's under a little pressure (to win state) because his sister did it last year,' Alatorre said with a laugh. 'He's had a great season to date.'
So has teammate Tim Edwards, a senior sprinter who anchored the Pirates to a stunning state 4x100 relay title last year. Edwards has expanded his range to the 400, where his 47.47 best last week at the NCS Tri-Valley meet places him 15th in the state. He also won the 200 last week (21.51) and hopes to elevate the Pirates relay from their best of 42.00, which is well off their winning state time of 40.77 last season.
Football star Jamar Searcy (Wake Forest signee) is the only other returner to the 4x100 team, but Ahmaud Thompson and Elijah Bow have improved greatly and should help the Pirates compete with favorites El Cerrito (40.87, fifth in state) and De La Salle-Concord (40.91, sixth in state) for the top of the podium.
Pittsburg placed third at MOC last season before its shocking state title.
More NCS track and field athletes to watch: Montgomery-Santa Rosa senior distance runner Hanne Thomsen, who has signed to Stanford, has the state's second-best mark in the 1,600 (4:41.16) and the 3,200 (9:58.17). She won the state 3,200 as a freshman, placed fourth in the 1,600 as a sophomore and last year placed second in the event (9:59.81). Thomsen has dropped the 800 but has the state's No. 6 mark (2:09.04). … Other top-10 state marks this season from NCS athletes: De La Salle junior sprinter Jaden Jefferson has the state's No. 7 100 time in 10.39. He finished fourth at state last season and is the defending MOC champion. … De La Salle senior Trey Caldwell is ninth in the 3,200 (8:58.17). … Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa junior Devon Bertoli is fifth in the shot put (60-9½). … San Marin-Novato senior Trenton Jepma is ninth in the discus (180-4). … Benicia senior Grady Wachob is tied for 10th in the high jump (6-8). … Encinal-Alameda senior Levi Harte is 10th in the long jump (23-9). … In the boys triple jump, Bishop O'Dowd-Oakland senior Cameron Jones is sixth (48-7) and De La Salle senior Ant Dean is seventh (48-5). Branson-Ross sophomore Farah Allen is 10th in the 1,600 (4:48.13). … Bay School junior Soleil Warner is seventh in the 300 hurdles (42.29). … Monte Vista-Danville's 4x800 girls relay team of Sofia Fernandez, Cate Miller, Kaylie O'Connell and Ava Padilla is seventh (9:14.46). … Acalanes senior Dulcinea Vail is tied for seventh in the high jump (5-7¼). … St. Mary's-Berkeley junior Kira Gant Hatcher is ninth in the long jump (19-5½) and third in the triple jump (40-0½). Teammate Corinne Jones, a sophomore, is fifth in the triple jump (39-9¼).

'About damn time': Dave Parker's emotional poem read by son at Hall of Fame induction

Dave Parker did not make it to have his day in Cooperstown, dying from Parkinson's disease on June 28, exactly one month before the Baseball Hall of Fame was set to induct the Cobra along with four other players. Yet Parker, who was 74, seemed to sense this day was coming, and penned a poem that his son, David Parker II, read to the assembled throng at Cooperstown July 28. It was equal parts defiant and reflective, braggadocious and appreciative and, for Pittsburgh, a balm. Parker played 19 major league seasons, the first 11 with the Pirates, helping them win the 1979 World Series. He went on to the Cincinnati Reds, won another title in Oakland and finished with one season in Milwaukee. Yet Parker proclaimed "I'm a Pirate for Bucs on my heart." Dave Parker poem Here's the full text of his son's reading: Here I am, 39. About damn time. I know I had to wait a little, but that's what you do with fine aged wine. I'm a Pirate for life. Wouldn't have it no other way. That was my family, even though I didn't go on Parade Day. I love y'all, the Bucs on my heart because those two championships I got, y'all played in the first part. I'm in the Hall now, you can't take that away. That statue better look good -- you know I got a pretty face. Top-tier athlete, fashion icon, sex symbol. No reason to list the rest of my credentials. I'm him, period. The Cobra. Known for my rocket arm, and I will run any catcher over. To my friends, families: I love y'all. Thanks for staying by my side. I told y'all Cooperstown would be my last ride.'' Dave Parker induction Parker hit 339 home runs and was a seven-time All-Star. He failed to garner the required 75% support on ballots submitted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, peaking at 24.5% in 1998. He also failed to earn any votes in his first two appearances on a veteran's committee ballot in 2014 and 2018, but earned 43.8% in 2020 and was named on 14 of 16 ballots in December 2024, enough for enshrinement.

Giants Calling Up Top Pitching Prospect For MLB Debut Vs. Pirates

Situated in third place in the NL West while sitting three games out of a wild card spot, the San Francisco Giants are giving the ball to their top pitching prospect on Monday night. Carson Whisenhunt, a 24-year-old left-hander, will be called up to make his MLB debut on Monday night at Oracle Park against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. The move comes after starter Landen Roupp was placed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. Whisenhunt was a second-round pick out of East Carolina in 2022, after he was suspended for his junior season due to a positive test for a performance-enhancing drug. He's the No. 3 overall prospect and the top pitching prospect in the Giants' system, per MLB Pipeline. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 12: Carson Whisenhunt #18 of the San Francisco Giants leaves the field in the seventh inning during the 2025 All-Star Futures Game at Truist Park on July 12, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. MoreDespite that high ranking, Whisenhunt has put up some rough numbers at the Triple-A level. In 43 starts for the Sacramento River Cats, he's posted an 11-10 record with a 4.94 ERA and 1.478 WHIP. He has racked up strikeouts, though, recording 221 strikeouts in 202 1/3 innings pitched. Overall in his minor league career, he's gone 12-11 with a 4.18 ERA in 65 appearances (64 starts). The call-up comes after the Giants were swept at home by the Mets over the weekend. San Francisco has gone 13-21 since acquiring Rafael Devers in the blockbuster trade in mid-June. Facing the Pirates could be as soft a landing as possible for Whisenhunt, as Pittsburgh ranks dead lat in MLB with 358 runs scored this season -- 18 fewer than second-worst Colorado. The Pirates also have the worst team OPS at .640, well behind the 29th-ranked White Sox at .659. The Pirates have, however, won five of their last six games, including a three-game sweep of the Tigers. More MLB: Mets Predicted to Acquire $50 Million All-Star From Lowly White Sox

Pirates Expected to Cut Ties With Possible Phillies Target David Bednar, Per Report

Multiple reports have stated the organization knows a strong bullpen is a priority, and Dave Dombrowski is looking at all options ahead of Thursday's deadline. One of their potential targets, Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar, could be on the move as MLB insider Bob Nightengale is reporting. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 26: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches in the ninth inning during the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park on July 26, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 26: David Bednar #51 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches in the ninth inning during the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at PNC Park on July 26, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania."Teams believe that the best three relievers traded at the deadline will be Jhoan Duran of the Minnesota Twins, David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Ryan Helsley of the St. Louis Cardinals," wrote Nightengale. "The Pirates continue to listen to offers for everyone on the team but Paul Skenes and Oneil Cruz and are still expected to move starter Mitch Keller." Bednar has been phenomenal for the Pirates since returning from Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He's conceded just one unearned run in his last 23 appearances for Pittsburgh. In that stretch, he's walked just five batters and struck out 29. The Phillies would be a reasonable spot for Bednar to land for a few reasons. He's an affordable option for them for the remainder of this season and all of next year. Philadelphia would owe him the remainder of his $5.9 million salary this season plus his arbitration number next year. Also, the Phillies are somewhat close to home for the Pittsburgh native. His family and friends could make the drive across US-76 to see him play, assuming that Bednar prioritizes staying close to home. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington has talked about needing to take some risks before the deadline on Thursday, and one of them could be trading his All-Star closer in hopes of bettering the team as a whole.
