The ex-wife of Malusi Gigaba, Norma Mngoma, has given insight into the 2018 leaked video of the politician's private sex video
'We were blackmailed, I think [for] almost six months. They were demanding like money, I think it started from a million,' said Mngoma in the latest episode of Untied on Showmax.
Mngoma shared how the figure decreased from the initial one million to approximately R800,000.
'He was negotiating with some comrades about it. But for me, I didn't know what was this video until the person called me because he [Gigaba] didn't tell me that time,' she said.
She alleged that the person blackmailing them had first blackmailed her over the video, prompting her to speak to Gigaba about it.
'He acted like it's our video, but we've never done a video [sex tape] together. And all along, he was acting like [it was] a video of us. He knew very well that it was a video of himself alone. So he lied until the day the video was leaked,' she said.
Mngoma said she felt sorry for Gigaba when she found out that he was trending on a pornographic website.
'I knew one day this obsession of him and the nudes…so he will use those pictures, he will put them there in his iPad, and then he will open the porn while he is sitting there doing his work.'

Norma Mngoma speaks
Mngoma features on the fourth episode of Untied, a talk show series that unpacks the complex world of divorce through the stories of famous women who have lived it.
Untied is hosted by Relebogile Mabotja.
Gigaba attempted to halt the airing of the episode by taking the matter to the Johannesburg High Court; however, the court dismissed the matter last week, allowing Showmax to broadcast it.
In the episode, Mngoma reflects on their relationship, detailing how it began and how it eventually came to an end.
The 50-year-old Mngoma said she first met Gigaba at an event, where the politician sent one of his bodyguards to ask for her number.
'I was like, why? He must come here. He must ask [for] my number himself because for me, if you want something you must go get it yourself. And then he came, I gave him the number,' she said.
The IT specialist said she was attracted to Gigaba's dark skin tone, his attire in a suit, and that he spoke isiZulu. She stated that she wasn't aware that Gigaba was a public figure.
Mngoma said that when they started dating, she received messages from Gigaba's wife at the time, who was separated from the politician as they were going through a divorce.
She also said she received a slew of messages from other girls on social media, telling her about Gigaba's alleged true nature.
'He was like, 'No, they're jealous'. I felt like that as well, I felt like they are jealous,' said Mngoma, chuckling.

Marriage
In 2014, after Gigaba's marriage to his ex-wife was finalised, the ANC member and Mngoma tied the knot.
Mngoma said the wedding, held at the Durban Botanic Gardens, cost about R6 million to R7 million.
She said the wedding and marriage didn't stop Gigaba's alleged mistresses from hassling her. According to Mngoma, it reached a point where Gigaba was allegedly blackmailed by some of the women.
'Others, they wanted him to cancel the wedding. 'Then I'm gonna tell your wife this and that,' it was just a lot. He made me believe that these things were not true and not existing.'
Mngoma alleges that during this time, Gigaba was more focused on keeping a 'clean' public image of the couple.
'In the beginning, he never paid so much attention to fixing things in the house. He was more of, how the public sees him…and then he's posting me,' she shared.

'The therapist is DA'
After years of being contacted by Gigaba's alleged girlfriends, Mngoma said she took the initiative to do her investigation about the politician's alleged infidelity.
'I started checking his phone because when someone sent me a message, I wouldn't go to him like I used to before,' she said.
To put her at ease, Mngoma said the member of parliament would recommend therapy.
'And how this therapy will happen, maybe he will attend it two or three times. So we will go, and when we are there at the therapy, he's acting like it's his weakness, he doesn't know how it happens. The third time he doesn't wanna go; he says 'no', the therapist is personal,' said Mngoma.
Mngoma alleges that Gigaba would make up excuses not to attend therapy sessions he initiated. She recalled that at one point, Gigaba accused a therapist, who happens to be white, of being racist.
'Or sometimes he will say 'no, the therapist is DA [Democratic Alliance]'. He used to have a reason why he's not continuing, and I will find another one,' Mngoma explained.
'He was more focused on fixing the [public] image…us, the Gigabytes. And then he's posting me writing long captions, and people are clapping for him, how much he loves so loud.'
Mngoma said she didn't stay with Gigaba because she wanted his money.
'When he met me, I had my own cars, I had my big house — I had a standalone in Bryanston.'
'I wanted our marriage to work.'

Portfolio committee to investigate bribery and audit discrepancies in Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality
The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is set to demand answers from the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality after allegations of bribery of councillors to skip meetings emerged. Image: Karen Sandison / Independent Media A parliamentary oversight committee will visit the troubled Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality to demand answers on a number of concerns, including alleged R5,000 bribery of councillors not to attend meetings and eight consecutive disclaimer audit opinions. The National Assembly's Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, chaired by Dr Zweli Mkhize, is expected to descend on the province for two days next week, and the struggling municipality based in Harrismith in the Free State has indicated that it will answer questions raised by MPs. On June 30, Mkhize wrote to Maluti-a-Phofung's controversial Mayor, Malekula Melato, and Free State Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Saki Mokoena, informing them about its plans to conduct an oversight visit in the municipality to gather information and ensure accountability. Among the matters identified by the portfolio committee requiring forensic investigations are the 'bribing of councillors to the value of R5,000 each to prevent council sittings from forming a quorum' and R5 million spent on the procurement of uniforms while the council was on recess. According to Mkhize's letter, Maluti-a-Phofung allegedly paid double the R6m bill to a security company in February and March this year, and Melato has been asked to apprise the portfolio committee on the allegation. The committee is also seeking answers on the eight consecutive disclaimer audit opinions by the Auditor-General South Africa (AGSA) and the AGSA's inability to determine the municipality's reported achievements. 'For example, there was one indicator that related to the much-needed upgrading of six water pump stations. 'The municipality reported that the six water pump stations had been upgraded but could not provide evidence of the achievement,' Mkhize explained. The committee said, based on site visits, the AGSA team confirmed that the municipality did not adequately maintain four of these pump stations, which had totally collapsed and had not been operational for several years. During the oversight visit, Maluti-a-Phofung is expected to provide reasons for the irregularities or transgressions and state the consequence management it exercised against the transgressors in line with relevant legislation and supply specific names and actions taken. The portfolio committee also wants details of the corrective steps taken to rectify the transgressions identified by the AGSA in the 2023/24 financial year. Additionally, the municipality must provide future action it intends to take to prevent recurrence, with target dates and the accounting platforms where the corrections will be monitored, as well as the anticipated actions to be considered should the preventative actions or targets be missed. The municipality's spokesperson, Thabo Khessah, said they were ready to provide the portfolio committee with the answers it requires.

Pretty Mahlangu died after she was run over during a sweet 16 traditional ceremony in June. The 68-year-old suspect was released from the Germiston police station on R5,000 station bail following her arrest earlier in July. Thirteen-year-old Pretty Mahlangu was part of a group of young maidens celebrating the traditional sweet 16 ceremony, known as umhlonyane in the Zulu culture. The host family said the driver of the car that ploughed into the group was a neighbour. Social media law expert sounds alarm on child porn distribution on WhatsApp, Instagram in SA
CAPE TOWN - Following an urgent application by the Digital Law Company, the Johannesburg High Court has ordered Meta Platforms to shut down a number of anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels distributing child pornography. The company's Emma Sadleir said that she started receiving direct messages last week from children who had been affected by the creation of various anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels, which had huge followings. "To be honest, I wasn't that familiar with the concept of a WhatsApp channel, but it is a platform for one-way communications, completely anonymous and anybody following the channel receives those communications and these channels, they are quite distinct from a group. A group has a maximum participant number of 1,024, whereas there are WhatsApp channels with literally 600,000 people following those channels." Sadleir said that the children were being asked to submit dirt, gossip and rumours about other children at their schools, and to also share child sexual material like photos and videos, sometimes obtained in a leak or filmed illegally. "There was an awful lot of content and we obtained a court order late on Monday night against Meta to immediately disable those platforms, to remove them, to ban whoever it is creating them, which they have done to a large extent." Sadleir said the high court also ordered that all identifying information of the owners of the accounts be disclosed, but this order had not been complied with. "They were supposed to comply by midday yesterday. So far, we haven't heard really anything from them except a letter from a South African law firm saying if we want information from Meta, we need to go and sue them in America, so the discussion now is whether we rush off to court again in contempt proceedings, to force Meta to comply and it seems that they're giving us no option at this stage." She said that there had been some progress since they approached the courts. "It hasn't been an entirely hollow victory so far, we know of seven different WhatsApp channels, accumulatively over 100,000 participants on those channels that have been removed. The Instagram accounts are largely deleted, and, more importantly, the person behind this has been posting references to the order and therefore saying that they're now going to only publish verified information. The channels have all gone very quiet in the last few hours now that the information about the court order is filtering into those channels and onto those group chats and platforms. So there has certainly been progress, unfortunately, too late for some children because we have been told of a number of children who have attempted or completed suicide in the last few days because they were identified or affected." While there is always online harm against children, Sadleir said that she had never seen anything on this scale before, as over 1,000 photos and videos had been shared on these platforms. "What is unique about this is that they tag the handles of the girls depicted. Ninety-nine percent of the victims of these accounts are girls, and they give her full name, in this class, in this grade, at this school and this is her social media account... It's targeted and there's a lot of victim blaming, and it is very alarming to see that kind of victim blaming, shaming, no remorse from these children... It's absolutely terrifying." The Digital Law Company is aware of children across the country who have been affected. "So, it's mostly been Johannesburg. All of the platforms use the same keyword, which I am not going to share because I don't want listeners to go and look for it, because a lot of the content is still available. We started off dealing mostly with Johannesburg and Johannesburg South. Luckily, we got the court order just as Cape Town and Durban were ramping up." Sadleir said that the most important lesson for all parents, as learnt in the last week, was that there are some terrifying aspects to WhatsApp. "I think a lot of parents give their child a phone far too young. If it were up to me, I would ban children in primary school owning phones outright but a lot of parents give their child in primary school a smartphone and they say you can't be on Snapchat or TikTok because they are dangerous but you can be on WhatsApp so you can let me know if hockey is cancelled or so you can be on your class WhatsApp group so you can talk to your friends. What we've learnt with the emergence of these WhatsApp channels is that the risk posed by WhatsApp, for me, as it currently stands, I would rather my child was on Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram before they had WhatsApp because of these WhatsApp channels. The scale of them, that you could have so many hundreds of thousands of users and how Meta seriously doesn't seem to care about what kind of content is being circulated." Sadleir personally reported each of the channels more than 50 times each and nothing happened until the court order was granted. She has this advice for parents: "Know what your children are up to, monitor how much time they are spending. Please don't let them sleep with their phones in their bedrooms, so much of this content is going down in the middle of the night. Children need to sleep, so you take the phone away at night, monitor what platforms they are on and speak to your children, and if they come to you and say they've come across dodgy stuff, don't just confiscate the phone because that means the next time it happens, they won't tell you. Try as far as possible to have open conversations with your children and educate yourself." In response to queries from EWN, Meta confirmed that it had shut down accounts it was able to identify and that it had submitted reports in line with the applicable laws. "We have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation and are committed to ensuring the safety of all users on our platforms. We can confirm that the accounts we have been able to identify have been shut down and we have submitted reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in line with applicable laws. We will continue to engage with law enforcement and respond to valid legal requests."
