Malaysia remains committed to principles of free, open trade, says Anwar

Anwar says the commitment was conveyed when he and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani chaired the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable session in Rome today. – Bernama photo ROME (July 2): Malaysia remains committed to the principles of free and open trade as the core to inclusive, sustainable and resilient economic growth. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that in an increasingly challenging global landscape, international stability and peace are an important foundation for economic prosperity as well as cross-border synergy opportunities that the business community must fully exploit. He said the commitment was conveyed when he and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani chaired the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable session here today. The session brought together more than 100 companies from both countries, covering the manufacturing, services and trade sectors, as well as industry agencies and organisations. 'This session reflects a shared commitment to strengthen trade relations and open up wider strategic investment space between Malaysia and Italy,' said Anwar. According to the Prime Minister, this session also strengthened the confidence of Italian industry players in Malaysia's openness policy, efficient governance and economic competitiveness. He said the active participation of leading companies highlights the potential for higher-impact bilateral cooperation, centered on added value, innovation and mutual interests. It opens up broad prospects in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, carbon capture and storage technology, defence, digital economy, aerospace and high-tech industries, key areas that are pillars of the country's economic reform agenda, he added. – Bernama Antonio Tajani anwar ibrahim Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable

Emerging technologies could help combat digital threats

KUCHING: Emerging technologies, particularly in microchip development, could provide effective safeguards against digital threats such as deepfakes, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said he had learned that ongoing research is focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to counter digital scams and deception. "While legal frameworks are important to curb the threats, technological solutions are also on the horizon. I read about a chip that will solve this problem," he told a press conference at the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 here, today. He said the chip is being designed to detect manipulated content by distinguishing between what is genuine and what is not. Abang Johari added that advances in information technology have heightened the need for balance and vigilance in managing the growing influence of AI and digitally fabricated content media. "In this world, there must always be a natural check and balance, like day and night. It's the same with technology. While deepfakes represent a dark side, the solution will come, and it may very well lie in this chip," he said. Meanwhile, in his speech, the Premier urged media practitioners to reaffirm their role not just as storytellers, but as steadfast guardians of public trust. He stressed that this trust must be upheld in every decision, particularly in the use of technology, as AI becomes increasingly prevalent in newsrooms. "Let us not be dazzled by the capabilities of AI to the point that we lose sight of our human values. Let's ensure that technology remains our servant, not our master. Do not erase the very qualities that make our profession vital to democracy," he said. More than 700 participants took part in the second edition of SMeC 2025, which began today. The two-day event features a distinguished line-up of local and international media and communication experts who will share their insights on adapting to the digital and AI era.

In an exclusive interview with Bernama, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia B. N. Reddy said the mission recognises that many applicants face difficulties in providing proof of ancestry, particularly due to historical migration patterns and the loss of documents over time. "Before OCI status is issued, individuals need to provide documents proving Indian origin, up to the third generation. "The challenge is that many documents are not available because those who came here during the British era often did not retain them, and some were lost during the war period,' he said. Reddy said the High Commission has been engaging with the Indian government to allow for the use of documents issued by Malaysian authorities and former British colonial administrations to support OCI applications. "We have tried to get our government to agree that documents issued by the Malaysian government or former Malaya authorities can be accepted. "If a document identifies India as the country of origin, we can issue the OCI card,' he said. He said currently around 100,000 of over two million Malaysian Indians are holding OCI cards. OCI status allows foreign nationals of Indian origin to travel to India without a visa and grants certain rights, including the ability to own property under specific conditions, but does not confer citizenship. - Bernama
