US braces for 'low-level' cyberattacks by Tehran

Time of India24-06-2025
WASHINGTON: US officials are warning businesses to brace for potential Iranian cyberattacks following American airstrikes on the country's nuclear sites, an event that experts say could draw a relatively small response from hackers.A bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security warned that Iranian hackers routinely target American technology, and that such activity is poised to occur after the US military operation. The message said that DHS hadn't identified any specific imminent threat."Low-level cyberattacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against US networks," according to the bulletin issued Sunday. It also warned of potential retaliatory violence from extremists in the US.
Iranian hackers have been accused in recent years of targeting banks, a Saudi oil company and US elections. The country has repeatedly shown a willingness to use cyberattacks against adversaries with stronger cyber capabilities than itself, including Israel, according to a 2024 threat assessment by
US intelligence
.
Iran's top military general on Monday said that the American strikes on its nuclear sites had given Iran a free hand for retaliatory measures. Still, while Iranian cyberattacks could disrupt specific targets, John Hultquist, chief analyst at Google's Threat Intelligence Group, warned that the country frequently fabricates or exaggerates its capabilities "in an effort to boost their psychological impact."
"We should be careful not to overestimate these incidents and inadvertently assist the actors," he said.

Pixel 10 series: Google may rival Apple MagSafe with Qi2-based 'Pixelsnap'

Google's upcoming Pixel 10 series could include support for the Qi2 standard of wireless charging. As reported by Android Authority, newly surfaced images of the device show what appears to be a magnetic wireless charger attached to the phone's back, indicating the presence of internal magnetic coils — an essential requirement for Qi2 compliance. The report suggests Google may brand this feature as 'Pixelsnap,' drawing parallels with Apple's 'MagSafe' magnetic charging system. Google Pixel 10 series: Pixelsnap wireless charging Earlier reports indicated that the Pixel 10 lineup would enable wireless charging via magnetic alignment when used with compatible cases. However, the latest images suggest that the magnetic coils may be integrated directly into the phone's body, allowing support for a wider range of Qi2-compatible accessories. In addition to the phones themselves, Google is reportedly preparing a new accessory ecosystem under the Pixelsnap name, which may include custom cases and magnetic wireless chargers. One image reveals a circular wireless charger that resembles the current Pixel Watch charger but in a larger size. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) recently introduced the Qi2 25W charging standard, which increases the maximum wireless charging speed from 15W to 25W. Google is expected to bypass the regular Qi2 specification and adopt the faster 25W Qi2 version for its upcoming Pixel phones. Although the magnetic charger appears only on the standard Pixel 10 model in the leaked image, it's likely that the full Pixel 10 series will offer this new functionality. What is Qi charging? Qi is a widely used wireless charging standard created by the Wireless Power Consortium. It operates through electromagnetic induction, transmitting power from a charging pad (transmitter) to a compatible device (receiver), eliminating the need for charging cables. Qi2, introduced in 2023, builds on Apple's MagSafe concept by adding a magnetic ring to improve alignment between devices and chargers, thereby increasing charging efficiency and stability. Initially capped at 15W, the standard has recently been upgraded to support speeds of up to 25W. Made by Google event: Details Google's annual Made by Google event is scheduled for August 20. The company is expected to unveil the Pixel 10 series alongside other hardware products, including the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a. The Pixel 10 lineup is likely to consist of multiple models: the base Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and a foldable variant called Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Google AI Mode Evolves: New Features Bring PDF Analysis, Canvas Planning, and Live Video Search to Users

Google is taking its AI capabilities a step further with significant enhancements to AI Mode in Search, aimed at making everyday tasks, learning, and research more intuitive. The tech giant is introducing new tools, including PDF analysis, a planning feature called Canvas, and an innovative real-time visual input system named Search Live. These updates are gradually rolling out, with initial availability for users in the U.S. and India, especially those participating in Google's AI Mode Labs experiment. Smarter PDF Analysis One of the standout features is the ability to upload and analyze PDF files directly within AI Mode. Users on Android, iOS, and desktop browsers can now submit documents—such as lecture notes, presentations, or reports—and ask targeted questions about the content. The AI scans the material, summarizes key points, and even fetches supporting data from the web with clickable references for deeper learning. This builds upon existing image analysis tools found in the Google app and marks a move toward supporting a broader range of document types in the future. Google confirms it is working on expanding this capability to include Google Drive files, making the feature even more accessible. Currently, the PDF analysis function is being introduced for English-speaking users over 18 in the U.S. and India. However, given that AI Mode remains in its experimental phase, Google encourages users to double-check information for accuracy. Organize with Canvas Google is also introducing a new project management feature within AI Mode called Canvas. Previously available in Gemini, Canvas now offers users a powerful, evolving side panel in Search that helps organize and maintain ongoing plans. Whether it's structuring a study timetable, mapping out a travel itinerary, or managing a multi-phase project, Canvas is designed to streamline planning through interactive sessions with AI. 'Users can start by asking AI Mode for help with a task and select 'Create Canvas' to begin building their plan,' Google shared. The tool also offers the potential to import context from personal documents like syllabi or meeting notes once file upload integration is expanded. Initially available in English for U.S. users enrolled in AI Mode Labs, Canvas is expected to broaden its reach over time. Live Video Search with Search Live Another groundbreaking addition is 'Search Live,' a feature that allows users to point their smartphone camera at a live scene and receive AI-generated insights on the spot. This feature uses the power of Project Astra and integrates with Google Lens to offer interactive, visual-based queries. Users can engage in ongoing dialogue with AI Mode while exploring the world around them, making it a useful tool for learning, problem-solving, and even real-time translation or identification. This feature is being deployed first on mobile devices in the U.S. Smarter Chrome Experience Lastly, Google is rolling out a Chrome-based integration titled 'Ask Google about this page.' Available in the address bar, this function allows users to highlight any section of a webpage—or even a PDF—and query it through AI Mode. Responses appear in a side panel with options for follow-up questions and deeper exploration. With these latest updates, Google continues its push to make AI tools more embedded in everyday digital experiences, ensuring that users have smarter, faster, and more interactive ways to work and learn.

Pope marks 50th anniversary of Cold War-era deal on security, human rights

Rome, Jul 30 (AP) Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday called for a renewed commitment to diplomacy to resolve conflicts as he marked the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Accords, the landmark Cold War-era agreement that ushered in a new era of security and human rights. At the end of his general audience, history's first American pope said that August 1 marks the anniversary of the conclusion of the 35-nation summit in Finland that resulted in the Helsinki Final Act, which years later helped give birth to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Renewing his appeal for peace in the world, Leo said: 'Today, more than ever, it is imperative to cherish the spirit of Helsinki, persevere in dialogue, strengthen cooperation and make diplomacy the preferred way to prevent and resolve conflicts." At the height of the Cold War detente in the 1970s, Finnish President Urho Kekkonen hosted a US-Soviet summit where US President Gerald Ford, Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and others signed a watershed commitment to peace, East-West contacts, European security and human rights. Leo said the agreement had 'inaugurated a new geopolitical season, favouring a rapprochement between East and West. It marked a renewed interest in human rights with particular attention to religious freedom, considered one of the fundamentals of the nascent architecture of cooperation from Vancouver to Vladivostok." With Russia's war raging in Ukraine, Leo recalled that the Holy See had sent a delegation to the Finnish summit headed by future secretary of state Archbishop Agostino Casaroli, best known for promoting and pursuing a policy of Ostpolitik, or openness and dialogue with Eastern Europe. 'While I entrust the victims to God's loving mercy, I pray for the wounded and for Christians who around the world continue to suffer violence and persecution, exhorting all those with responsibility at the local and international level to collaborate to prevent similar tragedies," he said. Wednesday's general audience marked the resumption of Leo's weekly encounter with the faithful following a weeks-long summer break. St Peter's Square was particularly full, given the arrival of tens of thousands of pilgrims in town for a weeklong Holy Year celebration for young Catholics.
