Tunku Idris Iskandar visits iconic floating book fair 'Doulos Hope'
The aim was to explore the ship's mission of promoting literacy, cross‑cultural exchange and community outreach among local visitors.
During the visit, Tunku Idris also received a special souvenir from Doulos Hope director, Nidhin Sebastian, accompanied by Captain Graham Wilburn.
The gesture symbolised the appreciation of the Doulos Hope crew for the royal visit and support.
The Doulos Hope had drawn significant public attention in Labuan, welcoming nearly 25,000 visitors since its arrival in early July. The event has been widely praised for boosting cultural and economic activity on the island.
Following the visit, Tunku Idris Iskandar also visited KD Kedah, the lead ship of the Kedah-class offshore patrol vessel of the Royal Malaysian Navy and engaged with its crew members.
Tunku Idris spent nearly an hour conversing with the naval team, expressing appreciation for their service. – Bernama

BALIK PULAU, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Balik Pulau Festival 2025 (FBP 2025) is positioning the area as a key cultural tourism destination in Penang, highlighting its rich arts, heritage and traditional cuisine beyond its famed durians. National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) deputy director-general (Policy and Planning) Mohd Radzi Omar said the festival, first introduced in 2019, also boosts Penang's economy by benefiting cultural entrepreneurs and art practitioners. 'This event showcases the diversity of Penang's cultural heritage and is crucial in sustaining the state's cultural tourism industry,' he told reporters at the festival's closing ceremony at Balik Pulau Sports Complex today. The ceremony was officiated by State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hong Wai and attended by Balik Pulau Member of Parliament Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik. Mohd Radzi said the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) approved RM1.38 million in cultural sector grants to 25 Penang cultural associations and companies last year, with RM490,000 approved so far this year to further boost activities. Ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, he said similar cultural festivals have been held in Perlis, Perak and Kelantan, with upcoming events planned in Kedah, Terengganu and other states. Wong said the festivals help promote Penang's cultural identity and provide economic spillovers, particularly for rural and suburban communities. Muhammad Bakhtiar expressed hope the event would be listed as an annual tourism calendar highlight. FBP 2025, themed Kembali Riuh di Lik Lau, was the second edition organised by MOTAC through JKKN in collaboration with the Balik Pulau MP's office and Warmina Penang Association.

GEORGE TOWN: At 84, many would choose to slow down, but Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib defies this norm, proving that age is truly just a number. Instead of retreating into a life of leisure, he remains an active, energetic, and forward-thinking figure, continuing to serve the people with the same zeal that has defined his career. In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Tun Ramli shared the secrets behind his vitality, even after stepping away from politics more than two decades ago. His formula? A blend of passion, discipline, and a love for adventure that has kept him physically fit and mentally sharp. After retiring from politics in 2008, Tun Ramli's life didn't slow down. He embraced his newfound freedom as an opportunity to explore new horizons. "I didn't fall into a lull after leaving politics. Instead, I turned to writing, and now I've authored four books," he shared with Bernama's editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Penang Bureau chief R. Ratcharathan at Seri Mutiara here recently. Writing, however, was just the beginning. His lifelong passions-mountain climbing and cycling-soon became his next adventures.
