Heavy rainfall expected in state

Bhubaneswar: A fresh spell of heavy rain is likely in most parts of state from Wednesday to Sunday. According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation, which is a remnant of tropical cyclone Wipha, is likely to emerge over the north Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the region in the subsequent 48 hours, potentially bringing enhanced rainfall over several districts of Odisha, the IMD said on Tuesday. "Most districts of Odisha will witness rainfall activities from Wednesday, while the intensity is likely to increase in northern and southern districts from Thursday," IMD regional centre director Manorama Mohanty said. 1 2 3 Visakhapatnam: Moderate to heavy rains continued across parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) and Rayalaseema for the third consecutive day. The weather agency on Tuesday forecast heavy rainfall at isolated locations statewide over the next three to four days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Macherla in Palnadu district recorded 8 cm of rainfall between Monday and Tuesday morning, followed by 7 cm in Guntur and Narsipatnam (Anakapalle), 6 cm in Rajahmundry (East Godavari) and Sattenapalle (Palnadu), and 5 cm in Bapatla, Karamchedu (Bapatla), Prathipadu (Kakinada), and Tanuku (West Godavari). Jangamaheswarapuram (Palnadu), Palakoderu (West Godavari), Tiruvuru and Nandigama (NTR district), and Srisailam (Nandyal) each recorded around 4 cm. A fresh low-pressure system is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal on Thursday, triggering further rainfall across north coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, and south coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) for the next three days. IMD also forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) at isolated places in NCAP, SCAP, Yanam, and Rayalaseema. Day and night temperatures have dipped by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius across the region. No major variation is expected in the mercury levels over the next two days. The recent showers have narrowed the state's rainfall deficit to 17% (from 20% on July 22), with 152.8 mm recorded against a normal of 184.2 mm for the season so far. Farmers across CAP and Rayalaseema expressed optimism that the ongoing rains would boost kharif crop activity in the coming weeks.

Remnant of tropical cyclone Wipha to trigger another round of intense rain spells in Kerala

The scale and intensity of the southwest monsoon will be intensified further starting from July 25, influenced by the remnants of tropical cyclone Wipha. Though Wipha, downgraded to a tropical storm, left a trail of destruction in parts of Southeast Asian countries by bringing in strong winds and heavy rain, it is likely to emerge over the North Bay of Bengal. Although weakened after the landfall, the system is likely to get intensified further after crossing over to the Bay of Bengal. According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, a fresh cyclonic circulation (remnant of Tropical Cyclone Wipha) is likely to emerge over the North Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region in the subsequent 48 hours. Though the track and timeline of the system would be clearer after the formation of low pressure area, it is likely to intensify into a depression and may move into the coastline of the country, triggering widespread rainfall in eastern and central India. 'This will also help the strengthening of the flow of westerlies from the Arabian Sea into the mainland of the country, activating some intense spells of rain in the Western Ghat regions along the west coast of the country. We expect intense rainfall activity in Kerala for three days starting from July 25,' said V.K. Mini, a scientist with IMD, Thiruvananthapuram. North and central Kerala will get a major share of rain during the next surge. The next surge can also narrow down the deficiency margin of the southwest monsoon rainfall in Kerala, which is still 11 % short of the average of rain clocked during the opening two months of June and July. The State will have to get a cumulative average rainfall of 1,302 mm of rain during June and July, while it has received 997.3 mm of rain so far against the average of 1124.2 mm (from June 1 to July 22).
